भ्रमन्ति 3Ap-लँट्

Today we will look at the form भ्रमन्ति 3Ap-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb11-23-50.

देहं मनोमात्रमिमं गृहीत्वा ममाहमित्यन्धधियो मनुष्याः ।
एषोऽहमन्योऽयमिति भ्रमेण दुरन्तपारे तमसि भ्रमन्ति ।। ११-२३-५० ।।

Gita Press translation “Taking this body (of their own) – a creation of their mind (alone) – as their very self and the body of their son, wife etc., as theirs, men of clouded judgement, laboring under the misapprehension that this is my own and he is another, revolve in the world of matter (enveloped in the darkness of ignorance), the end of which is difficult to reach.”

भ्रमन्ति is derived from the धातुः √भ्रम् (भ्वादि-गणः, भ्रमुँ चलने, धातु-पाठः #१. ९८५)

The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।

In the धातु-पाठः, the भ्रम्-धातुः has one इत् letter – the उकार: following the मकार:। This इत् letter has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus the भ्रम्-धातुः is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। (Neither 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम् nor 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले applies.) Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the भ्रम्-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So भ्रम्-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-बहुवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “झि”।

(1) भ्रम् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

(2) भ्रम् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) भ्रम् + झि । 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “झि” as the substitute for the लकारः। “झि” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् – The affixes of the तिङ्-प्रत्याहारः and the affixes that have शकारः as an इत् get the designation of सार्वधातुकम् if they are prescribed in the “धातो:” अधिकार:।

(4) भ्रम् + शप् + झि । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. The शप्-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

(5) भ्रम् + अ + झि । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(6) भ्रम + अन्ति । By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः,“अन्त्” comes in as a replacement for the झकारः of a प्रत्यय:।

(7) भ्रमन्ति । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे, in the place of an अकार: which not at the end of a पदम्, and the following गुण: letter, there is single substitute of the latter (the गुण: letter.)

  1. 1. What is the alternate form (other than भ्रमन्ति) for √भ्रम् (भ्रमुँ चलने, धातु-पाठः #१. ९८५) लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्?

Answer: The alternate form is भ्रम्यन्ति।
    = भ्रम् + श्यन् + झि by 3-1-70 वा भ्राशभ्लाशभ्रमुक्रमुक्लमुत्रसित्रुटिलषः – The श्यन्-प्रत्यय: is optionally placed after the following verbal roots – √भ्राश् (टुभ्राशृँ – [दीप्तौ]१. १०३३) – when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent.
(In the other case (when the श्यन्-प्रत्यय: is not used) the default शप्-प्रत्यय: is used by 3-1-68.)
    “श्यन्” which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्।
    = भ्रम् + य + झि । 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = भ्रम् + य + अन्ति by 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
    = भ्रम्यन्ति by 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    2. Can you spot a इयँङ्-आदेश: in the verse?

    Answer: इयँङ्-आदेश: has been used in अन्धधियः (प्रातिपदिकम् “अन्धधी”, adjective to masculine “मनुष्याः”, प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)
    अन्धधी + जस् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…)
    = अन्धधी + अस् (1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः, 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः)
    = अन्धध्इयँङ् + अस् (6-4-77 अचि श्नुधातुभ्रुवां य्वोरियँङुवँङौ – If a प्रत्यय: beginning with an अच् (vowel) follows, then the (ending letter of the) अङ्गम् is replaced by इयँङ्/उवँङ् in the following three cases – (1) If the अङ्गम् ends in the प्रत्यय: “श्नु” or (2) If the अङ्गम् ends in the इवर्ण: or उवर्ण: of a धातु: or (3) If the अङ्गम् is the word “भ्रू”।
Here the ending ईकार: of the अङ्गम् “अन्धधी” belongs to a धातु:। As per 1-1-53 ङिच्च, only the ending ईकार: of the अङ्गम् takes the इयँङ्-आदेश:।)
    = अन्धधिय् + अस् (1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः)
    = अन्धधियः (8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः, 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः)।

    3. Where is the सू्त्रम् 7-2-108 इदमो मः used in the verse? To which सूत्रम् is this an अपवादः?

    Answer: अयम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “इदम्”, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)
    इदम् + सुँ (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्…)
    = इदम् + स् (1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् | Now 7-2-108 इदमो मः overrules 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः and the ending मकार: of इदम् stays as a मकार:)
    = अयम् + स् (7-2-111 इदोऽय् पुंसि)
    = अयम् (6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात् सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल्)

    7-2-108 इदमो मः is an अपवादः to the rule 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः ।

    4. Can you find a तिङन्तं पदम् of √भ्रम् in the गीता?

    Answer: गाण्डीवं स्रंसते हस्तात्वक्चैव परिदह्यते ।
    न च शक्नोम्यवस्थातुं भ्रमतीव च मे मनः ॥ 1-30 ॥
    भ्रमति – लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    भ्रमति + इव = भ्रमतीव by 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“In this scary place, even the dogs don’t roam at night.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “भीषण” for “scary”, the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् “श्वन्” for “dog.”

    Answer: अस्मिन् भीषणे स्थाने श्वानः अपि निशि न भ्रमन्ति। = अस्मिन् भीषणे स्थाने श्वानोऽपि निशि न भ्रमन्ति।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“One should tell the truth. One should tell that which is pleasing. One should not tell the truth which is not pleasing.”
Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “सत्य” for “truth”, the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रिय” for “that which is pleasing” and neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “अप्रिय” for “which is not pleasing.” Use √वद् (वदँ व्यक्तायां वाचि १. ११६४) for “to tell.”

    Answer: सत्यम् वदेत्। प्रियम् वदेत्। न वदेत् सत्यम् अप्रियम्। = सत्यं वदेत्। प्रियं वदेत्। न वदेत् सत्यमप्रियम्।

This question was adapted from a famous सुभाषितम् which goes like this –
    सत्यं ब्रूयात् प्रियं ब्रूयान् न ब्रूयात् सत्यमप्रियम् ।
    प्रियं च नानृतं ब्रूयादेष धर्मः सनातनः ॥

    Note: The form ब्रूयात् is derived from √ब्रू (ब्रूञ् व्यक्तायां वाचि २. ३९), विधि-लिँङ्, प्रथम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्।

    Easy Questions:

    1. Derive the form इमम् (पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् “इदम्”।

    Answer: इदम् + अम् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…)

    = इद + अम् (6-1-97 अतो गुणे)
    = इम + अम् (7-2-109 दश्च)
    = इमम् (6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः)

    2. Which word used in the verse gets the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः?
