Today we will look at the form शृणुयात् 3As-विधिलिँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 12-12-58.

Gita Press translation “He who repeats this Purāṇa (to others) everyday with an undivided mind (say,) for three hours or (for that matter even) for a second and (in the same way) he who listens to it repeatedly with reverence purifies his very soul.”

शृणुयात् is derived from the धातुः √श्रु (भ्वादि-गणः, श्रु श्रवणे, धातु-पाठः #१.

In the धातु-पाठः, the √श्रु-धातुः has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the √श्रु-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √श्रु-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “तिप्”।

By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ् , the affix लिङ् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of command, direction, invitation, request, inquiry and entreaty.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः। “तिप्” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च, the ending letter (इकारः) of a इकारान्तः (ending in a इकारः) परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः, is elided.

By 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च , the परस्मैपदम् affixes of लिँङ् get यासुट् as an augment, and this augment is उदात्तः and a ङित्। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the यासुट्-आगमः before the प्रत्यय:। See advanced question 1.

The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

By 3-1-74 श्रुवः शृ च , the श्नु-प्रत्ययः is placed after the verbal root √श्रु (श्रु श्रवणे १. १०९२), when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. Simultaneously, “श्रु” takes the substitution “शृ”। The श्नु-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

Note: The प्रत्यय: “नु” is ङिद्वत् by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् and “यास् त्” is ङित् by 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्‍मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्‍च। Therefore 1-1-5 ग्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-84 from performing the गुण: substitution for the ऋकार: of “शृ” as well as the उकार: of “नु”।

By 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्‍त्‍यस्‍य, the सकारः of a सार्वधातुक-लिङ् affix is elided, provided it is not the final letter of the affix.

By वार्त्तिकम् (under 8-4-1) – ऋवर्णान्नस्य णत्वं वाच्यम् – णकारः shall be ordained in the place of the नकारः after the vowel ऋ also (along-side the रेफः and षकारः)।

Note: “अनु” has been used as a उपसर्ग:। – ref.

Questions:

1. Where has शृणुयात् been used in the गीता?

2. Where is 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः used in the verse?

3. Why has पाणिनि: said “अनन्‍त्‍यस्‍य” in the सूत्रम् 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्‍त्‍यस्‍य? Explain by using the example

4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“One should listen repeatedly to the गीता।”

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“What I say (is) not the authority. But on the other hand, what has been said by the sage Panini, that alone (is) the authority.” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रमाण” for “authority”, use the अव्ययम् “परन्तु” for “but on the other hand” and use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “उक्तम्” for “has been said.”

Advanced question:

1. In commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च, the किशिका says “स्थानिवद्भावादेव लिङादेशस्य ङित्त्वे सिद्धे यासुटो ङिद्वचनं ज्ञापनार्थम् – लकाराश्रयङित्त्वमादेशानां न भवतीति।” Please explain using the example

Easy Questions:

1. Where is 8-3-19 लोपः शाकल्यस्य used in the verse?

2. Derive the form आत्मानम् (द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) from the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “आत्मन्”।

  1. 1. Where has शृणुयात् been used in the गीता?

    2. Where is 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः used in the verse?

Note: The वतुँप्-प्रत्यय: has been used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् “श्रद्धावत्”।
Note: 7-1-70 is actually a later rule, and also an invariable rule (नित्य-कार्यम्) compared to 6-4-14. So as per 1-4-2, we should apply 7-1-70 before 6-4-14. But if we do that then the mention of “अतु” in 6-4-14 will become useless – it will never find application because then the उपधा will always be a नकार:। So on the basis of वचनसामर्थ्यात् we apply 6-4-14 before 7-1-70.
Note: After this 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य cannot be applied because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्र असिद्धम्।

    3. Why has पाणिनि: said “अनन्‍त्‍यस्‍य” in the सूत्रम् 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्‍त्‍यस्‍य? Explain by using the example

Answer: In the derivation of शृणुयु:, the सकारः of the यासुट्-आगमः gets elided by 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्‍त्‍यस्‍य। If पाणिनि: had not said “अनन्‍त्‍यस्‍य”, then the अन्त्य-सकारः at the end of the जुस्-प्रत्ययः would also get elided resulting in an undesired form. That is why पाणिनि: has specified “अनन्‍त्‍यस्‍य” in the सूत्रम् 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्‍त्‍यस्‍य।

    = श्रु + जुस् 3-4-108, जुस् also gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-56
    = शृ + श्नु + यास् उस् 3-1-74, श्नु which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113
    Now “नु” is ङिद्वत् by 1-2-4 and “यास् उस्” is ङित् by 3-4-103. Therefore 1-1-5 prevents 7-3-84 from performing the गुण: substitution for the ऋकार: of “शृ” as well as the उकार: of “नु”।
Note: If पाणिनि: had not said “अनन्‍त्‍यस्‍य” in the सूत्रम् 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्‍त्‍यस्‍य, then at this stage the ending (अन्त्य:) सकार: at the end of “या उस्” would have taken लोप:, resulting in an undesirable form.

    4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“One should listen repeatedly to the गीता।”

    Answer: गीताम् अनुशृणुयात्।

    Answer:

    Advanced question:

    1. In commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च, the किशिका says “स्थानिवद्भावादेव लिङादेशस्य ङित्त्वे सिद्धे यासुटो ङिद्वचनं ज्ञापनार्थम् – लकाराश्रयङित्त्वमादेशानां न भवतीति।” Please explain using the example

Answer: Why has पाणिनि: said that यासुट् should be ङित् in the सूत्रम् 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च? The reason for this question is that यासुट् comes as an आगम: to a प्रत्यय: that is an आदेश: for लिङ् and लिङ् already has ङकार: as an इत्। By स्थानिवद्भाव: (1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ) the प्रत्यय: to which यासुट् comes as an आगम: should already be ङित्। Then what is the point of making यासुट् a ङित्? The fact that पाणिनि: is still making यासुट् a ङित्, gives us the following indication (ज्ञापकम्) – लकाराश्रयङित्त्वमादेशानां न भवतीति- which means that an आदेश: which comes in place of a लकार: that is ङित् does not automatically become ङित्।

In order to understand the significance of this ज्ञापकम्, let us consider the form अशृणवम् (√श्रु, लँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, उत्तम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्)। The steps are as follows:
    श्रु + लँङ् 3-2-111 = श्रु + ल् 1-3-2, 1-3-3
    = श्रु + मिप् 3-4-78, 1-4-101, 1-4-102, 1-4-107, मिप् gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113
    = श्रु + अम् 3-4-101, अम् also gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-56
    = शृ + श्नु + अम् 3-1-74, श्नु which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 = शृ + नु + अम् 1-3-8, 1-3-4
    The प्रत्यय: “नु” is ङिद्वत् by 1-2-4. Therefore 1-1-5 prevents 7-3-84 from performing the गुण: substitution for the ऋकार: of “शृ”
Note: अम् came as an आदेश: for मिप् which came as an आदेश: for लँङ्। In the absence of the ज्ञापकम् mentioned above, मिप् and hence अम् would have been ङित् by स्थानिवद्भाव: (1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ)। And then 1-1-5 would have prevented 7-3-84 from doing the गुणादेश: for the उकार: of “नु” and we would have ended up with an undesirable form. This illustrates the significance of the ज्ञापकम् mentioned above.)

    Easy Questions:

    1. Where is 8-3-19 लोपः शाकल्यस्य used in the verse?

    Answer: Between य एव।
After this 6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि does not apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्)

    2. Derive the form आत्मानम् (द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) from the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “आत्मन्”।

    Answer: आत्मन् + अम् । ।
By 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ, the penultimate letter of the अङ्गम् (base) ending in a नकार: gets elongated if it is followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix. “अम्” has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।
