Today we will look at the form भवेताम् 3Ad-विधिलिँङ् from श्रीमद्वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् 2-46-6.

Gita Press translation “I bewail (the lot of) my father as well as my illustrious mother (Kausalyā). I fear lest those parents of ours, who must be incessantly weeping, should be deprived of their eyesight.”

भवेताम् is derived from the धातुः √भू (भू सत्तायाम्, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१. १)

In the धातु-पाठः, the भू-धातुः has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the भू-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So भू-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-द्विवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “तस्”।

By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ् , the affix लिङ् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of command, direction, invitation, request, inquiry and entreaty.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तस्” as the substitute for the लकारः। “तस्” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपाम् तांतंतामः , The तिङ्-प्रत्ययाः तस्, थस्, थ and मिप् of a लकारः which is an ङित्, are replaced by ताम्, तम्, त and अम् respectively. ताम् also gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशो ऽनल्विधौ

by 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च , the परस्मैपदम् affixes of लिँङः get यासुट् as an augment, and this augment is उदात्तः and a ङित्। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the यासुट्-आगमः before the प्रत्यय:।

The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of ताम् from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

by 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. The शप्-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

by 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः , an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows.

by 7-2-80 अतो येयः, when “यास्” of a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः follows an अङ्गम् ending in a अकारः, then it is substituted by “इय्” ।

by 6-1-66 लोपो व्‍योर्वलि , a वकारः or a यकारः is elided when it is followed by a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः।

by 6-1-87 आद्गुणः

  1. Questions:
    1. Can you spot a विधि-लिँङ् form of भू-धातुः in Chapter 11 of गीता?

    2. In commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च, the काशिका says – सीयुटोऽपवादः। What does this mean?
    Answer: It means that the सूत्रम् 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च is an अपवादः for the सूत्रम् 3-4-102 लिङस्सीयुट् ।
By the सूत्रम् 3-4-102 लिङस्सीयुट् all affixes of लिँङ् should get सीयुट् as an augment. But the सूत्रम् 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च overrules 3-4-102 for परस्मैपदम् affixes of लिँङ्, which get यासुँट् as an augment. So only आत्मनेपदम् affixes of लिँङ् get सीयुट् as an augment by 3-4-102.

    3. Which other (besides “तस्”, “ताम्”) तिङ्-प्रत्यय: has been used in the verse?

    4. How do say this in Sanskrit?
“May you both be successful in all your endeavors.” Use a प्रातिपदिकम् from the verse for “successful.”

    5. Please state the one synonym for the word “अन्ध:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “अन्ध” adjective) as given in the अमरकोश:।

    Advanced Question:

    1. Please do the पदच्छेदः of the सूत्रम् 7-2-80 अतो येयः and identify the विभक्ति:/वचनम् as well as the प्रातिपदिकम् in each पदम्।
Note: The सन्धि: between यास् and इय: is आर्ष: (irregular.) The सन्धि-कार्यम् should have been as follows:
    यास् इयः
    यारुँ इयः (8-2-66 ससजुषो रु:)
    यार् इयः (1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्; 1-3-9 तस्य लोप:)
    याय् इयः (8-3-17 भोभगोअघोअपूर्वस्य योऽशि )
    या इयः (8-3-19 लोपः शाकल्यस्य)

After this, due to 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्, there should be no scope for 6-1-87 आद्गुणः। But instead, 6-1-87 has been applied (ignoring 8-2-1) to give येय:। This is how the सन्धि: is आर्ष:।

Here the प्रत्यय: “ङस्” (षष्ठी-एकवचनम्) has taken the लुक् elision irregularly. (The expected form was यास:)। Note: As per 1-1-49 षष्ठी स्थानेयोगा, the term being replaced is “यास्”।
The अकार: at the end of “इय” is only उच्चारणार्थः (for the sake of pronunciation.) The आदेश: is only “इय्”।

    Easy Questions:

Note – the प्रातिपदिकम् “रुदत्” ends in the शतृँ-प्रत्यय:।
    Answer: रुदत् + औ (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्…। The प्रत्यय: “औ” has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य)
    रुद नुँम् त् + औ (By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः, a non-verbal base with an उक् (उ, ऋ, ऌ) as a marker takes the नुँम् augment when followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix. As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात् परः, the नुँम्-आगम: is placed after the last vowel of the अङ्गम् “रुदत्”)
After this 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि and 8-4-58 अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः can be applied, giving the same final form.

    2. Where is the सूत्रम् 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः used in the verse?
    Answer: This सूत्रम् is used in forms पितरम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “पितृ”, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) and मातरम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “मातृ”, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।
। The प्रत्यय: “अम्” has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य)
    पितर् + अम् ( 7-3-110 ऋतो ङिसर्वनामस्थानयोः, ऋत् (short ऋ) ending अङ्गम् gets a गुणः replacement, when followed by the affix ङि or an affix with the designation सर्वनामस्थानम्। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending ऋकार: takes the गुणादेश:। 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः applies.)
