  1. Questions
    1. Where is the प्रातिपदिकम् “अप्” used in Chapter 2 of the गीता?

    2. We have studied another सूत्रम् (besides 7-4-48 अपो भि) in which पाणिनि: specifically mentions the प्रातिपदिकम् “अप्”। Which one is it and why did it not apply in this example?
    Answer: Another सूत्रम् in which पाणिनि: specifically mentions the प्रातिपदिकम् “अप्” is 6-4-11 अप्तृन्तृच्स्वसृनप्तृनेष्टृत्वष्टृक्षत्तृहोतृपोतृप्रशास्तॄणाम् । According to this सूत्रम् when a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix that is not a सम्बुद्धिः follows, the penultimate vowel of अप्, of words ending in affixes तृन् and तृच् and of the words स्वसृ, नप्तृ, नेष्टृ, त्वष्टृ, क्षत्तृ, होतृ, पोतृ and प्रशास्तृ becomes long. In this example “भ्यस्” is not a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix, that’s why 6-4-11 अप्तृन्तृच्स्वसृनप्तृनेष्टृत्वष्टृक्षत्तृहोतृपोतृप्रशास्तॄणाम् did not apply.

    3. In commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-4-48 अपो भि, the काशिका says “भि इति किम्? अप्सु।” Please explain.
    Answer: According to 7-4-48 अपो भि there is a substitution of the तकार: in place of the (ending letter) of “अप्” when a प्रत्यय: beginning with a भकार: follows. If प्रत्यय: begins with any other letter, there’s no substitution. Example is अप् + सुप् = अप्सु, “सुप्”-प्रत्यय: doesn’t begin with भकार:, that’s why 7-4-48 अपो भि doesn’t apply.

    4. By which सूत्रम् does वै get the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा?
    Answer: वै is considered to be included in the चादि-गणः (1-4-57 चादयोऽसत्त्वे) because the चादि-गणः is an आकृति-गण:। It gets the निपात-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-56 प्राग्रीश्वरान् निपाताः । And as a निपात: “वै” gets अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-37 स्वरादिनिपातमव्ययम् ।

    5. Can you spot another (besides “अप्”) हलन्तम् (ending in a consonant) प्रातिपदिकम् used in the verse?
    Answer: निशि (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “निश्”, सप्तमी-एकवचनम् ।)
    निश् + ङि (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…)
    = निश् + इ (1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः)
    = निशि।

    6. Can you recall another (besides “अप्”) प्रातिपदिकम् – that we have studied – which also takes only बहुवचन-प्रत्यया:?
    Answer: “त्रि”, “चतुर्”, “पञ्चन्”, “षष्”, “सप्तन्”, “अष्टन्”, “नवन्” and “दशन्” are नित्यं बहुवचनान्ताः शब्दाः that we have studied. In fact, all the numbers from “त्रि” (three) to नवदशन् (nineteen) are नित्यं बहुवचनान्ताः शब्दाः। (Twenty onwards are not.)

    7. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
    “Rare is the man who always speaks the truth.” Use the वद्-धातु: (listed in the धातु-पाठ: as वदँ व्यक्तायां वाचि १. ११६४) for “to speak” and the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “विरल” for “rare.”
    Answer: यः पुरुषः सत्यम् सर्वदा/सदा वदति सः विरलः। = यः पुरुषः सत्यं सर्वदा/सदा वदति स विरलः।

    8. Please list the two synonyms for “क्रीडा” (प्रातिपदिकम् “क्रीडा” feminine, meaning “sport”) as given in the अमरकोश:।
    क्रीडा खेला च कूर्दनम् ।।१-७-३३।।
    (इति त्रीणि “विहारस्य” नामानि)
    Answer: खेला (प्रातिपदिकम् “खेला” feminine)
    कूर्दनम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “कूर्दन” neuter)

    Easy questions:
    1. Can you spot a याट्-आगम: in the verse?
    Answer: व्युष्टायाम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “व्युष्टा”, स्त्रीलिङ्गे सप्तमी-एकवचनम् ।)
    व्युष्टा + ङि । by 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
    व्युष्टा + आम्। by 7-3-116 ङेराम् नद्याम्नीभ्यः।
    व्युष्टा + या आम् । by 7-3-113 याडापः the ङित् affixes following a base ending in an आप् affix get the augment याट्, which is placed before the ङित् affix according to 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    व्युष्टायाम् । by 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः ।

    2. Where has the सुत्रम् 6-1-69 एङ्ह्रस्वात् सम्बुद्धेः been used in the verse?
    Answer: कौरव्य (प्रातिपदिकम् “कौरव्य”, सम्बुद्धि:)
    कौरव्य + सुँ (सम्बुद्धि:) । by 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
    कौरव्य + स् । by 1-3-2 उपदेशे ऽजनुनासिक इत्।
    कौरव्य । by 6-1-69 एङ्ह्रस्वात् सम्बुद्धेः – Following an अङ्गम् ending in एङ् (ए or ओ) or a short vowel, a consonant is dropped if it belongs to a सम्बुद्धि: affix.
