भवन्ति 3Ap-लँट्

Today we will look at the form भवन्ति 3Ap-लँट् from श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता Bg3-14.

अन्नाद्भवन्ति भूतानि पर्जन्यादन्नसम्भवः |
यज्ञाद्भवति पर्जन्यो यज्ञः कर्मसमुद्भवः ||३-१४||

Gita Press translation “All beings are evolved from food; production of food is dependent on rain; rain ensues from sacrifice, and sacrifice is rooted in prescribed action.”

भवन्ति is derived from the धातुः √भू (भू सत्तायाम्, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१.१)

The विवक्षा is वर्तमान-काले, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।

In the धातु-पाठः, the भू-धातुः has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the भू-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So भू-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-बहुवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “झि”।

(1) भू + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

(2) भू + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) भू + झि । 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “झि” as the substitute for the लकारः। “झि” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

(4) भू + शप् + झि । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. The शप्-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

(5) भो + शप् + झि । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः , an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows.

(6) भो + अ + झि । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् , 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते , 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(7) भव + झि । “अव्”-आदेश: by 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

(8) भव + अन्त् इ । By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः -“अन्त्” comes in as a replacement for the झकारः of a प्रत्यय:।

(9) भवन्ति । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे – In the place of the letter अ which not at the end of a पदम्, and the following गुण: letter, there is single substitute of the latter (the गुण: letter.)

Questions:

1. The पदच्छेद: of the सूत्रम् 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः is झ:, अन्त:। So in the first पदम् there is an अकार: (following the झकार:) before the विसर्ग:। In the second पदम् also there is an अकार: (following the तकार:) before the विसर्ग:। Which one of these is उच्चारणार्थम् (for the sake of pronunciation only)?
a) The first one is उच्चारणार्थम्, the second one is not.
b) The second one is उच्चारणार्थम्, the first one is not.
c) Both are उच्चारणार्थम्।
d) Neither is उच्चारणार्थम्।

2. Can you spot another तिङ्-प्रत्यय: (besides “झि”) in the verse?

3. The सूत्रम् 6-1-97 अतो गुणे belongs to which अधिकार:?
a) अङ्गस्य
b) एकः पूर्वपरयोः
c) ङ्याप्प्रातिपदिकात्‌
d) धातोः

4. Which other तिङ्-प्रत्यय: (besides “झि”) contains the letter “झ्”?

5. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः been used in Chapter 15 of the गीता?

6. Can you spot an अव्ययम् in the verse?

7. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Looking (having looked) at the moon on the full-moon day, people become happy.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “सुखिन्” for “happy”, the अव्ययम् “दृष्ट्वा” for “having looked” and the feminine noun “पौर्णिमा” for “full-moon day.”

8. Please list the five synonyms for the word “अन्नम्” (प्रातिपदिकम् “अन्न” neuter, meaning “food/boiled rice”) as given in the अमरकोश:।
भिस्सा स्त्री भक्तमन्धोऽन्नमोदनोऽस्त्री स दीदिविः ।।२-९-४८।।
(इति षट् “अन्नस्य” नामानि)।

    b) The second one is उच्चारणार्थम्, the first one is not.
    c) Both are उच्चारणार्थम्।
    d) Neither is उच्चारणार्थम्।

The विभक्ति:/वचनम् used in झ: is षष्ठी-एकवचनम्। The प्रातिपदिकम् is “झ्”। As per 1-1-49 षष्ठी स्थानेयोगा, this is the item being replaced.
The विभक्ति:/वचनम् used in अन्त: is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्। The प्रातिपदिकम् is “अन्त”। But the आदेश: is only “अन्त्”। The अकार: at the end of “अन्त” is उच्चारणार्थम्।

In all of the above, the झि-प्रत्यय: (परस्मैपदम्) has been used, except in निवर्तन्ते, where the झ-प्रत्यय: (आत्मनेपदम्) has been used.

    6. Can you spot an अव्ययम् in the verse?

    Answer: सम् (अन्नसम्भवः), सम्, उद् (कर्मसमुद्भवः)।
    These come under a class of terms प्रादय: (1-4-58 प्रादयः)। They get the निपात-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-56 प्राग्रीश्वरान्निपाताः। And by 1-1-37 स्वरादिनिपातम् अव्ययम्, a निपात: gets अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा। So both “सम्” and “उद्” have अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा ।

    Answer: पौर्णिमायाम् शशिनम्/चन्द्रमसम्/सोमम् दृष्ट्वा जनाः सुखिनः भवन्ति = पौर्णिमायां शशिनं/चन्द्रमसं/सोमं दृष्ट्वा जनाः सुखिनो भवन्ति।

    8. Please list the five synonyms for the word “अन्नम्” (प्रातिपदिकम् “अन्न” neuter, meaning “food/boiled rice”) as given in the अमरकोश:।

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-72 नपुंसकस्य झलचः been used?

    Answer: भूतानि (प्रातिपदिकम् “भूत”, neuter, प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)
    भूत + जस् ।
    = भूत + शि । 7-1-20 जश्शसोः शिः, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
    = भूत नुँम् + शि । 7-1-72 When a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix follows, the neuter bases that end in a झल् letter or an अच् (vowel) get the नुँम् augment, 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः।
    = भूत न् + इ । 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = भूतानि । 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ।

    2. Derive the form “अन्नात्” (पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्) from the नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “अन्न”।

    Answer: अन्न + ङसिँ । 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छस्टा…..।
    = अन्न + आत् । Substitution of ङसिँ by आत्, after a प्रातिपदिकम् ending in अकार: according to 7-1-12 टाङसिँङसामिनात्स्या:।
= अन्नात् । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः when an अक् letter is followed by a सवर्ण-अच् letter then in place of these two there is a single substitute of a long (अच्) letter.
