8. Please list the eighteen synonyms for the word “काम:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “काम” masculine, meaning “god of love”) as given in the अमरकोश:।

  1. 1. अष्टन् + जस् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…) = अष्ट आ + जस् (7-2-84 अष्टन आ विभक्तौ, even though the आकारादेशः is only when a हलादि-विभक्तिः follows, by the ज्ञापकम् from rule 7-1-21 अष्टाभ्य औश्, it should be understood to apply even when जस् and शस् follow.)
    = अष्टा + जस् (6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः ) = अष्टा + औश् (7-1-21 अष्टाभ्य औश्, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य)
    = अष्टा + औ (1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः) = अष्टौ (6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि)

    The alternate form is अष्ट। This is when the optional rule 7-2-84 is not applied. The derivation will be similar to that of पञ्च।

    3. In the form

    4. In the form

    6. By 6-4-136 विभाषा ङिश्योः, the अकारः of the अन् in the अङ्गम् when a स्वादि-प्रत्यय: that follows is not सर्वनामस्थानम् and which either begins with a यकारः or a vowel (अच्), is elided only optionally when the प्रत्यय: that is following is “ङि”(सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) or “शी”(प्रथमा/द्वितीया द्विवचनम्)।
    The forms will be नाम्नी/नामनी when शी-प्रत्ययः follows, and नाम्नि/नामनि when ङि-प्रत्ययः follows.

    Also in संबुद्धिः।
    When सम्बुद्धिः follows, the पदान्त-नकारः of neuter words is elided optionally.
    By the वार्त्तिकम् (under 8-2-8) सम्बुद्धौ नपुंसकानां नलोपो वा वाच्यः, we get two forms as follows:
    (हे) नामन् (neuter) + सुँ (सम्बुद्धिः) = नामन् (7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌) = नामन् (8-2-8 न ङिसम्बुद्ध्योः stops 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य।)
    But, by the above वार्तिकम् we get the optional form (हे) नाम ।

    7. d) Here मे is short for neither मम (षष्ठी-एकवचनम्) nor मह्यम् (चतुर्थी-एकवचनम्)।

    Note: From the translation, it looks to be used in the sense of पञ्चमी-विभक्तिः। By 8-1-22 तेमयावेकवचनस्य, मे should have been the short form for मह्यम् or मम (singular affix of the fourth or sixth case)। In the commentary on this verse, श्रीधर-स्वामी says मे = मत्त:। So it has been used in the sense of पञ्चमी।
    A possible way to justify this usage is to treat “मे” as a निपात: (and hence an अव्ययम्) to be included in the चादि-गण: on the basis of the गणसूत्रम् “उपसर्ग-विभक्ति-स्वर-प्रतिरूपकाश्च।” Words which mimic an उपसर्ग: or a word ending in a विभक्ति: or a vowel, can be included in the चादि-गण:।

    8. The synonyms (all masculine) of काम: are

    1. मदनः (प्रातिपदिकम् “मदन”)
    2. मन्मथः (प्रातिपदिकम् “मन्मथ”)

    Easy Questions:

    1. वसु + ङस् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…, अङ्गम् has घि-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-7 शेषो घ्यसखि)
    = वसो + ङस् (7-3-111 घेर्ङिति , when a ङित् सुँप् affix follows, then an अङ्गम् having the घि-संज्ञा takes the गुण: substitution. Note: By 1-1-52 the गुण: substitution will take place for the ending letter (in this case इ or उ) of the अङ्गम्.)
    = वसो + अस् (1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः, 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः )
    = वसोस् (6-1-110 ङसिङसोश्च, in place of a preceding एङ् (ए, ओ) letter and the following short अ of the affix ङसिँ or ङस्, there is a single substitute of the former (एङ् letter.))
    = वसोः (8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः, 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः)

    2. In the form
