  1. Questions:
    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-2-81 एत ईद्बहुवचने been used in the गीता (Chapter 11)?
    Answer:

    2. What would have been the final form in this example if the gender of “अदस्” had been feminine?
    Answer: अमूषाम्।
    अदस् + आम् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौ …..
    अद अ + आम् । By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः, अदस् gets the अकारादेशः । As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending सकार: gets replaced.
    अद + आम् । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे, the अकारः at the end of “अद” and the following अकारादेशः is replaced by अकारः (पररूपम्) as एकादेशः ।
    अद टाप् + आम्। Since we are deriving a feminine form, we have to add the प्रत्ययः “टाप्” using 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप् ।
    अद आ + आम्। अनुबन्धलोप: by 1-3-7 चुटू , 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    अदा + आम्। By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।
    अदा + सुँट् आम् । By 7-1-52 आमि सर्वनाम्नः सुट्, the affix आम् prescribed to a pronoun, takes the augment सुँट् when the base (अङ्गम्) ends in अवर्ण: (short or long अ). As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the सुँट्-आगम: attaches to the beginning of आम्।
    अदा + साम् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    अमू + साम् । By 8-2-80 अदसोऽसेर्दादु दो मः, ऊकार: in place of the आकारः following the दकार: of “अदस्” and the दकार: gets substituted by मकार:।
    अमूषाम् । By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययोः, the letter स् is replaced by the cerebral ष् ।

    3. Do पदच्छेद: of वा अमीषाम्। Please mention the relevant rules.
    Answer: The पदच्छेदः is वै, अमीषाम्।
    वै + अमीषाम् = वाय् + अमीषाम् (6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः) = वा अमीषाम् (8-3-19 लोपः शाकल्यस्य)। After this 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः cannot apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-2-62 क्विन्प्रत्ययस्य कुः been used in this verse?
    Answer: 8-2-62 क्विन्प्रत्ययस्य कुः has been used in the case of the प्रातिपदिकम् “अशेषदृश्” to give the form अशेषदृक् / अशेषदृग् ।
Actually here “अशेषदृश्” is formed by adding the क्विप्-प्रत्ययः and not क्विन्-प्रत्ययः। So the क्विन्-प्रत्यय: has not actually been used here. But as per the सूत्रम् 3-2-60 त्यदादिषु दृशोऽनालोचने कञ् च the धातु: “दृश्” can take the क्विन्-प्रत्यय: when one of the terms “त्यद्” etc are used as an उपपदम्। As long as a धातु: can take the क्विन्-प्रत्यय: somewhere, it will be subject to 8-2-62 क्विन्प्रत्ययस्य कुः even in those places where the क्विन्-प्रत्यय: has not actually been used. So based on this, 8-2-62 क्विन्प्रत्ययस्य कुः is applied to “अशेषदृश्”।

    5. The अव्ययम् “इति” signifies an end-quote. Where does the quotation begin in this verse?
Answer: The quotation begins with कृत्यं किमत्रास्य …
    “कृत्यं किमत्रास्य खलस्य जीवनं न वा अमीषां च सतां विहिंसनम् । द्वयं कथं स्यात्” – इति।

    6. Which word has समानाधिकरणम् with अमीषाम्?
    सताम् (good fellows) । प्रातिपदिकम् “सत्” पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्।

    7. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“This stream has come from that mountain over there.” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “स्रोतस्” for “stream”, the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “आगत” for “has come” and the pronoun प्रातिपदिकम् “अदस्” for “that over there.”
    Answer: इदम् स्रोतः अमुष्मात् पर्वतात् आगतम् = इदं स्रोतोऽमुष्मात्पर्वतादागतम् ।
    अथवा –
    एतत् स्रोतः अमुष्मात् गिरेः आगतम् = एतत् स्रोतोऽमुष्माद् गिरेरागतम् ।

    8. Please list the six synonyms for the word “तुण्डम्” (प्रातिपदिकम् “तुण्ड” neuter, meaning “mouth”) as given in the अमरकोश:।
    All are neuter.

    Easy questions:
    1. Which सूत्रम् was used to change the हकार: in the word हरि: to a घकार:?
Answer: 8-4-62 झयो होऽन्यतरस्याम् has been used to do the घकारादेश: (in place of the हकार:) in अशेषदृग्घरिः । The meaning of 8-4-62 झयो होऽन्यतरस्याम् is as follows: When a झय् letter precedes, then in place of the letter ह् there is optionally a substitute which is पूर्वसवर्ण: (सवर्ण: with the preceding झय् letter). Even though this rule is optional, in practice it is generally applied. In the present example we have the गकार: (which is a झय् letter) preceding the हकार: of “हरि:”। Therefore the हकार: takes the पूर्वसवर्णादेश: which is the घकार: (since it’s the closest substitute in the कवर्ग:)।

    2. Derive the form “जीवनम्” (प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् “जीवन” (declined like वन/ज्ञान-शब्द:)।
    जीवन+ सुँ । 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौ…..।
    जीवन + अम् । by 7-1-24 अतोऽम् the affixes सुँ and अम् that follow a neuter अङ्गम् ending in the short vowel अ take अम् as their replacement.
जीवनम् । by 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix अम् there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.
