एतादृक् mNs

Today we will look at the form एतादृक् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् SB 9-11-17

स्त्रीपुंप्रसङ्ग एतादृक्सर्वत्र त्रासमावहः ।
अपीश्वराणां किमुत ग्राम्यस्य गृहचेतसः ।। ९-११-१७ ।।

Gita Press translation “Excessive fondness of men and women for each other is always such as brings fear (and grief in its train) even to powerful souls, and much more to a voluptuary whose thoughts are riveted on his household.”

First we derive the प्रातिपदिकम् “एतादृश्” from एतद् (सर्वनाम-शब्दः) and the धातु: “दृश्” –
एतद् + दृश् + क्विन् । In addition to the कञ्-प्रत्यय: 3-2-60 त्यदादिषु दृशोऽनालोचने कञ् च, also ordains the क्विन्-प्रत्ययः। By अनुबन्ध-लोपः the ककार: and नकार: are removed using 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् along with 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। The इकारः in the the क्विन्-प्रत्यय: is उच्चारणार्थः। The single letter वकार: that remains gets अपृक्त-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-41 अपृक्त एकाल् प्रत्ययः। By 6-1-67 वेरपृक्तस्य, this वकार: which is अपृक्तः takes लोपः।
= एत आ + दृश् । By 6-3-91 आ सर्वनाम्नः, when दृश्, दृश or वतुँ follows, सर्वनाम-शब्दाः get आकारः as a replacement for their last letter.
= एतादृश् । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

Being an उपपद-समासः, by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च, एतादृश् gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा and the सुँप्-प्रत्ययाः are ordained after it by 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…

The declension of एतादृश् in the masculine follows the same steps as the declension of ऋत्विज्।

By 8-2-36 व्रश्चभ्रस्जसृजमृजयजराजभ्राजच्छशां षः, the ending शकारः gets षकारः as a replacement, since it is at the end of a पदम् ।

(5) एतादृड् । By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते, a झल् letter occurring at the end of a पदम् is replaced by a जश् letter.

(6) एतादृग् । Since ‘एतादृश्’ ends in the affix क्विन्, by 8-2-62 क्विन्प्रत्ययस्य कुः, ‘एतादृश्’ which has पद-सञ्ज्ञा, takes the कवर्ग: (in this case गकार:) as a replacement for its ending डकार:।

(7) एतादृक् / एतादृग् । By 8-4-56 वाऽवसाने, the झल् letter is optionally replaced by a चर् letter when nothing follows.

Questions:

1. In the सूत्रम् 6-3-91 आ सर्वनाम्नः why did पाणिनि: put “आ” – why not just “अ”? Couldn’t we have still used 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः to get the प्रातिपदिकम् “एतादृश्”?

2. In addition to ग्राम्यस्य, can you spot another षष्ठी-एकवचनम् (a word ending in the sixth case singular) in this verse?

3. Where has the नुँट्-आगम: been used?

4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“This kind of a book (is) difficult to find in this world.” Use the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् “ग्रन्थ” for “book” and the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “दुर्लभ” for “difficult to find.”

5. The अमरकोश: gives five synonyms for the word “भयम्” (प्रातिपदिकम् “भय” neuter, meaning “fear”). One of them is त्रास: (प्रातिपदिकम् “त्रास” masculine) used in this verse. Please list the other four.
दरस्त्रासौ भीतिर्भीः साध्वसं भयम् ।।१-७-२१।।
(इति षड् “भयस्य” नामानि)

6. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-3-19 लोपः शाकल्यस्य been used?

7. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-3-91 आ सर्वनाम्नः been used in the गीता (Chapter 13)?

8. What would be the सप्तमी-बहुवचनम् of “एतादृश्”?

Easy questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् was used to get अपि + ईश्वराणाम् = अपीश्वराणाम्?

2. Derive the form “ग्राम्यस्य” from the प्रातिपदिकम् “ग्राम्य”। It is declined like राम-शब्द:। (Use 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः)।

  1. Questions:
    1. In the सूत्रम् 6-3-91 आ सर्वनाम्नः why did पाणिनि: put “आ” – why not just “अ”? Couldn’t we have still used 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः to get the प्रातिपदिकम् “एतादृश्”?
Answer: No. Because 6-1-97 अतो गुणे, would have over-ruled 6-1-101. The ending अकार: at the end of “एत” is not पदान्त:। Hence in the absence of 6-1-101, 6-1-97 अतो गुणे would have applied giving the undesired form एतदृश्

    2. In addition to ग्राम्यस्य, can you spot another षष्ठी-एकवचनम् (a word ending in the sixth case singular) in this verse?
    गृहचेतसः (प्रातिपदिकम् “गृहचेतस्” ) is declined in षष्ठी-एकवचनम्।
    गृहचेतस् + ङस् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…)
    गृहचेतस् + अस् (अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोप:। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।)
    गृहचेतसः (8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः)

    3. Where has the नुँट्-आगम: been used?
The नुँट्-आगम: has been used in ईश्वराणाम् declined as षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्।
    ईश्वर + आम् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…)
    ईश्वर + नुँट् आम् ( 7-1-54 ह्रस्वनद्यापो नुँट् gives नुँट् as आगमः to आम्। By 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ this आगमः attaches to the beginning of आम्)
    ईश्वर + नाम् (ट् gets इत् संज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् whereas उँ gets इत् संज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and both disappear by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः)
ईश्वरा + नाम् (By 6-4-3 नामि the ending vowel of an अङ्गम् gets elongated if followed by the term “नाम्”)
    ईश्वराणाम् ( 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि gives णकारः as आदेशः to नकार:)

    4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“This kind of a book (is) difficult to find in this world.” Use the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् “ग्रन्थ” for “book” and the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “दुर्लभ” for “difficult to find.”
    एतादृशः/एतादृक् ग्रन्थः अस्मिन् लोके दुर्लभः = एतादृशो/एतादृग् ग्रन्थोऽस्मिल्ँ लोके दुर्लभः।

    5. The अमरकोश: gives five synonyms for the word “भयम्” (प्रातिपदिकम् “भय” neuter, meaning “fear”). One of them is त्रास: (प्रातिपदिकम् “त्रास” masculine) used in this verse. Please list the other four.
    दरस्त्रासौ भीतिर्भीः साध्वसं भयम् ।।१-७-२१।।
    (इति षड् “भयस्य” नामानि)
    1. दर: (प्रातिपदिकम् “दर” masculine)
    2. भीति: (प्रातिपदिकम् “भीति” feminine)
    3. भी:(प्रातिपदिकम् “भी” feminine)
    4. साध्वसम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “साध्वस” neuter)

    6. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-3-19 लोपः शाकल्यस्य been used?
    8-3-19 लोपः शाकल्यस्य has been used in सन्धि-कार्यम् between स्त्रीपुंप्रसङ्गः and एतादृक्।
    After this 6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि cannot apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम् ।

    7. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-3-91 आ सर्वनाम्नः been used in the गीता (Chapter 13)?
    6-3-91 आ सर्वनाम्नः been used in the गीता (Chapter 13) in verse 4 in यादृक् (प्रातिपदिकम् “यादृश्”) which is declined as प्रथमा-एकवचनम् नपुंसकलिङ्गे।
    तत्क्षेत्रं यच्च यादृक्च यद्विकारि यतश्च यत् |
    स च यो यत्प्रभावश्च तत्समासेन मे शृणु || 13-4||

    8. What would be the सप्तमी-बहुवचनम् of “एतादृश्”?
    The सप्तमी-बहुवचनम् of “एतादृश्” will be एतादृक्षु।
    एतादृश् + सुप् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…)
    एतादृश् + सु (अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। “एतादृश्” gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनामस्थाने)
    एतादृष् + सु (By 8-2-36 व्रश्चभ्रस्जसृजमृजयजराजभ्राजच्छशां षः, the ending शकारः gets षकारः as a replacement, since it is at the end of a पदम्)
    एतादृड् + सु (By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते, a झल् letter occurring at the end of a पदम् is replaced by a जश् letter)
    एतादृग् + सु (Since ‘एतादृश्’ ends in the affix क्विन्, by 8-2-62 क्विन्प्रत्ययस्य कुः, ‘एतादृश्’ which has पद-सञ्ज्ञा, takes the कवर्ग: (in this case गकार:) as a replacement for its ending डकार:)
एतादृग् + षु । (By 8-3-59 आदेश-प्रत्यययो: the letter स् – which is part of the सुप्-प्रत्यय: – is replaced by the cerebral ष् when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग:)
    एतादृक् + षु (8-4-55 खरि च)
    एतादृक्षु

    Easy questions:
    1. Which सूत्रम् was used to get अपि + ईश्वराणाम् = अपीश्वराणाम्?
    6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।

    2. Derive the form “ग्राम्यस्य” from the प्रातिपदिकम् “ग्राम्य”। It is declined like राम-शब्द:। (Use 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः)।
    ग्राम्य + ङस् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…)
    ग्राम्य + स्य (By 7-1-12 टाङसिँङसामिनात्स्या:, ङस् is replaced by स्य)
    ग्राम्यस्य।
