प्रत्यञ्चम् mAs

Today we will look at the form प्रत्यञ्चम् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् SB 6-9-20

ततस्ते विस्मिताः सर्वे विषण्णा ग्रस्ततेजसः ।
प्रत्यञ्चमादिपुरुषमुपतस्थुः समाहिताः ।। ६-९-२० ।।

Gita Press translation “With their splendor eclipsed, nay, amazed and dejected (at their discomfiture), they all thereupon composed themselves and (mentally) approached Lord Nārāyaṇa (the most ancient Person), dwelling in their very heart (with the following prayer).”

In order to derive the form प्रत्यञ्चम्, we have to start with the धातु “अन्च्” preceded by “प्रति” । “प्रति + अन्च्” means turned or directed inward.

By 3-2-59 ऋत्विग्दधृक्स्रग्दिगुष्णिगञ्चुयुजिक्रुञ्चां च, “प्रति अन्च्” gets the क्विन्-प्रत्यय:। क्विन् takes सर्वापहारलोपः। The ककार: and नकार: are removed using 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् along with 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। The इकारः in the क्विन्-प्रत्यय: is उच्चारणार्थः। The single letter वकार: that remains gets अपृक्त-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-41 अपृक्त एकाल् प्रत्ययः। By 6-1-67 वेरपृक्तस्य, this वकार: which is अपृक्तः takes लोपः।

Now, since क्विन् is a कित्-प्रत्ययः, by 6-4-24 अनिदितां हल उपधायाः क्ङिति, the उपधा-नकारः of अन्च् takes लोपः to give “प्रति अच्”।

The क्विन्-प्रत्यय: has the कृत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ् । By 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्, even though the क्विन्-प्रत्ययः has taken लोपः, “प्रति अच्” gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and hence it will take the affixes सुँ, औ, जस् etc. mandated by 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। The विवक्षा here is पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्

(1) प्रति अच् + अम् ।

(2) प्रति अ नुँम् च् + अम् । By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः, the verbal base अन्चुँ whose नकारः has taken elision takes the नुँम् augment when followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix. By 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, the नुँम्-आगम: is placed after the last अच् (the अकार: of अच्) in “प्रति अच्”।

(3) प्रति अन्च् + अम् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of अम् from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा ।

(4) प्रत्यन्चम् । यणादेशः by 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

(5) प्रत्यंचम् । By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि, the नकारः (which is not at the end of the पदम्) gets अनुस्वारः as replacement since a झल् letter follows.

(6) प्रत्यञ्चम् । By 8-4-58 अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः, when a यय् letter follows, अनुस्वारः gets the सवर्णः of the यय् letter as its replacement.

    Easy questions:

    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-3-22 हलि सर्वेषाम् been used in this verse?
    Answer: Between विषण्णा ग्रस्ततेजसः।
    The पदच्छेदः is विषण्णाः, ग्रस्ततेजसः।
    विषण्णास् + ग्रस्ततेजसः = विषण्णारुँ + ग्रस्ततेजसः (8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः)
    = विषण्णाय् + ग्रस्ततेजसः (8-3-17 भोभगोअघोअपूर्वस्य योऽशि)
= विषण्णा ग्रस्ततेजसः (8-3-22 हलि सर्वेषाम् – When a हल् letter follows then in the opinion of all teachers the letter य् at the end of a पदम् drops, when it is preceded by the letter अ (long or short.))

  2. Questions:
    1. What will be the पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-बहुवचनम् of “प्रति अच्”?
The पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-बहुवचनम् of “प्रति अच्” will be प्रतीचः। The derivation is as follows:
    प्रति अच् + शस्
    प्रति अच् + अस् (1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते; अङ्गम् has भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम्)
    प्रति च् + अस् (6-4-138 अचः । the अकारः of the verbal root अन्चुँ whose नकारः has taken लोपः and which has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा, takes लोपः)
    प्रतीचस् (6-3-138 चौ । The अण् letter preceding the verbal base अन्चुँ whose अकारः and नकारः have taken लोपः, will be elongated)
    प्रतीचः (8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः, 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः)

    2. Why do we keep the प्रातिपदिकम् as “प्रति अच्” – why not apply 6-1-77 इको यणचि in the beginning itself and make it “प्रत्यच्”?
The प्रातिपदिकम् is kept as “प्रति अच्” because, depending on which प्रत्यय: follows, the अकार: in “अच्” may take लोप: by 6-4-138 अचः। If that happens (as in the example in question 1) the सन्धि-कार्यम् would have to be undone. To avoid this, प्रातिपदिकम् is kept as “प्रति अच्” or “प्र अच्” etc and when we know that 6-4-138 is not going to apply, then only सन्धि-कार्यम् is done. If 6-4-138 applies then the अकार: of “अच्” is gone and there is no सन्धि-कार्यम् to be done.

    3. Where has the शी-आदेश: been done in this verse?
    The शी-आदेश: been done in the words सर्वे (प्रातिपदिकम् “सर्व”, अत्र पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्) and ते (प्रातिपदिकम् “तद्”, अत्र पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)
    सर्व + जस्
    सर्व + शी (7-1-17 जस: शी । Following a pronoun ending in short अ the nominative plural ending जस् is replaced by शी.)
    सर्व + ई (1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते)
    सर्वे (6-1-87 आद्गुणः)
    Similarly in ते।
    तद् + जस्
    त अ + जस् (7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः)
    त + जस् (6-1-97 अतो गुणे)
    त + शी (7-1-17 जस: शी )
    त + ई (1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते)
    ते (6-1-87 आद्गुणः)

    4. Please list the four synonyms of the word “आदि:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “आदि” masculine, meaning “first” as given in the अमरकोश:।
The adjectives can be used in the feminine or neuter also. So we will have आद्या in the feminine and आद्यम् in the neuter. Similarly पूर्वा/पूर्वम् , पौरस्त्या/पौरस्त्यम् and प्रथमा/प्रथमम्।

    तद् + जस्
