भगवति mLs

Today we will look at the form भगवति from श्रीमद्भागवतम् SB 1-2-7

वासुदेवे भगवति भक्तियोगः प्रयोजितः ।
जनयत्याशु वैराग्यं ज्ञानं च यदहैतुकम् ।। १-२-७ ।।

Gita Press translation “Contact established with Bhagavān Vāsudeva (Śrī Kṛṣṇa) through Devotion speedily awakens dispassion and immediate knowledge.”

‘भगवत्’ is a वतुँप्-प्रत्ययान्त-शब्दः and gets प्रातिपदिकसञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च । The विवक्षा here is पुंलिङ्गे सप्तमी-एकवचनम्। 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘भगवत्’

(1) भगवत् + ङि ।

(2) भगवति । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

Questions:

1. Why didn’t 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः or 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः apply in this example?

2. Which word in the verse has समानाधिकरणम् with भगवति?

3. In this example, the अङ्गम् “भगवत्” has:
a) पद-सञ्ज्ञा
b) भ-सञ्ज्ञा
c) Neither पद-सञ्ज्ञा nor भ-सञ्ज्ञा
d) Both पद-सञ्ज्ञा and भ-सञ्ज्ञा

4. Where is the प्रातिपदिकम् “भगवत्” used in the chapter ten of the गीता?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Knowledge quickly generates happiness.” Use a verb from the verse.

6. Please list the ten synonyms of the word “आशु” (प्रातिपदिकम् “आशु” adjective (used in the neuter gender here), meaning “quick”) as given in the अमरकोश:।
अथ शीघ्रं त्वरितं लघु क्षिप्रमरं द्रुतम् ।।१-१-६४।।
सत्वरं चपलं तूर्णमविलम्बितमाशु च ।।१-१-६५।।
(इति एकादश “शीघ्रस्य” नामानि)

7. Why didn’t the सूत्रम् 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः apply in deriving the form “यद्” (नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “यद्”) even though “यद्” is part of the त्यदादि-गण:?

8. Consider the form “वैराग्यम्” which is द्वितीया-एकवचनम् of the नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “वैराग्य”। Steps are as follows:
a) वैराग्य + अम् by 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छस्टा….।
b) वैराग्य + अम् by 7-1-24 अतोऽम्।
c) वैराग्यम् by 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः।
What is the point of replacing “अम्” by “अम्” in step b)?

Easy questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् was used to give जनयति + आशु = जनयत्याशु?

2. Which one was used in ज्ञानम् च = ज्ञानं च?

3. Derive the form वासुदेवे (सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् “वासुदेव”। It is declined like राम-शब्द:।

  1. Questions:
    1. Why didn’t 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः or 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः apply in this example?
    6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः applies when a base that ends in अतुँ or a base that ends in an अस् which is not of a verbal root is followed by सुँ affix which is not सम्बुद्धिः । Then the penultimate letter of the base is elongated by 6-4-14. In this example we have ङि affix, so 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य चाधातोः will not apply.
    7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः applies only when a non-verbal base with an उक् (उ, ऋ, ऌ) as a marker and the verbal base अञ्चुँ whose नकारः has taken elision is followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix. Then the base takes the नुँम् augment by 7-1-70. In this example, ङि affix is not a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix so 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः will not apply.

    2. Which word in the verse has समानाधिकरणम् with भगवति?
    वासुदेवे (प्रातिपदिकम् “वासुदेव”; पुंलिङ्गे सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) has समानाधिकरणम् with भगवति which is also पुंलिङ्गे सप्तमी-एकवचनम्।

    3. In this example, the अङ्गम् “भगवत्” has:
    a) पद-सञ्ज्ञा
    b) भ-सञ्ज्ञा
    c) Neither पद-सञ्ज्ञा nor भ-सञ्ज्ञा
    d) Both पद-सञ्ज्ञा and भ-सञ्ज्ञा
    Only b) भ-सञ्ज्ञा . Both 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनमस्थाने and 1-4-18 यचि भम् belong to the अधिकारः of 1-4-1 आ कडारादेका संज्ञा, by which a term can have only one सञ्ज्ञा defined in this अधिकार:। So a term may have either भ-सञ्ज्ञा or पद-सञ्ज्ञा but not both. When the conditions for the अङ्गम् to have पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनमस्थाने and भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम् exist, it only gets भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-2 विप्रतिषेधे परं कार्यम् since 1-4-18 यचि भम् is a later rule. Not only that, but 1-4-18 यचि भम् applies in a sub-domain of 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनमस्थाने so if it is not given a chance to apply in its sub-domain, it will never apply.

    4. Where is the प्रातिपदिकम् “भगवत्” used in the chapter ten of the गीता?
    प्रातिपदिकम् “भगवत्” appears in श्रीभगवान् (ch 10 verse 1; प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) and भगवन् (ch 10 verses 14 & 17; सम्बोधनम्-एकवचनम्)
    श्रीभगवानुवाच = श्रीभगवान् उवाच।

    सर्वमेतदृतं मन्ये यन्मां वदसि केशव |
    न हि ते भगवन्व्यक्तिं विदुर्देवा न दानवाः || 10-14||
    कथं विद्यामहं योगिंस्त्वां सदा परिचिन्तयन् |
    केषु केषु च भावेषु चिन्त्योऽसि भगवन्मया || 10-17||

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
    “Knowledge quickly generates happiness.” Use a verb from the verse.
    ज्ञानम् सुखम् आशु जनयति = ज्ञानं सुखमाशु जनयति ।

    6. Please list the ten synonyms of the word “आशु” (प्रातिपदिकम् “आशु” adjective (used in the neuter gender here), meaning “quick”) as given in the अमरकोश:।

    Note: These are all adjectives, they’ve been declined here in the neuter.

    7. Why didn’t the सूत्रम् 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः apply in deriving the form “यद्” (नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “यद्”) even though “यद्” is part of the त्यदादि-गण:?
    In deriving the form “यद्” (नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “यद्”) , first 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात् is applied – The affixes सुँ and अम् that follow a neuter अङ्गम् take the लुक् elision. By 1-1-63 न लुमताऽङ्गस्य, when an affix takes the लुक्, श्लु or लुप् elision, the operations that were ordained on the अङ्गम् by that affix, shall not be carried out. Thus 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः does not apply. 1-1-63 is निषेध-सूत्रम् to 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्। The derivation is as follows:
    यद् + सुँ (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छस्टा…)
    = यद् (7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्)

    8. Consider the form “वैराग्यम्” which is द्वितीया-एकवचनम् of the नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “वैराग्य”। Steps are as follows:
    a) वैराग्य + अम् by 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छस्टा….।
    b) वैराग्य + अम् by 7-1-24 अतोऽम्।
    c) वैराग्यम् by 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः।
    What is the point of replacing “अम्” by “अम्” in step b)?
    If the replacement of “अम्” by “अम्” were not specified in 7-1-24 अतोऽम्, then the उत्सर्गः 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात् would have come into effect and the अम्-प्रत्ययः would have taken लुक्।
    In order to prevent this elision by 7-1-23 following a neuter अङ्गम् ending in the अकार:, 7-1-24 अतोऽम् has to be applied.

    Easy questions:
    1. Which सूत्रम् was used to give जनयति + आशु = जनयत्याशु?
    6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    2. Which one was used in ज्ञानम् च = ज्ञानं च?
    8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः।

    3. Derive the form वासुदेवे (सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् “वासुदेव”। It is declined like राम-शब्द:।
    वासुदेव + ङि (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छस्टा…)
    वासुदेव + इ (1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः)
    वासुदेवे (6-1-87 आद्गुणः )

  2. 2. Which word in the verse has समानाधिकरणम् with भगवति?
    Answer: वासुदेवे (सप्तमी-एकवचनम् from the प्रातिपदिकम् “वासुदेव”)

    3. In this example, the अङ्गम् “भगवत्” has:
    a) पद-सञ्ज्ञा
    b) भ-सञ्ज्ञा
    c) Neither पद-सञ्ज्ञा nor भ-सञ्ज्ञा
    d) Both पद-सञ्ज्ञा and भ-सञ्ज्ञा
    Answer: b) भ-सञ्ज्ञा। ङि is अजादि-प्रत्ययः (the ङकारः is an इत् by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते)। By 1-4-18 यचि भम्, the अङ्गम् gets the भ-सञ्ज्ञा, when any प्रत्ययः (excluding the affixes that are सर्वनामस्थानम्), from सुँ up to कप् that begin with यकारः or अच् (vowel) follows.

    4. Where is the प्रातिपदिकम् “भगवत्” used in the chapter ten of the गीता?
    Answer: 1) श्रीभगवानुवाच – “भगवान्” (प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)
    2) सर्वमेतदृतं मन्ये यन्मां वदसि केशव ।
    न हि ते भगवन्व्यक्तिं विदुर्देवा न दानवाः ॥ 10-14 ॥ – here it is “(हे) भगवन्” (सम्बुद्धिः)
    3) कथं विद्यामहं योगिंस्त्वां सदा परिचिन्तयन्‌ |
    केषु केषु च भावेषु चिन्त्योऽसि भगवन्मया || 10-17|| – here it is “(हे) भगवन्” (सम्बुद्धिः)

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
    “Knowledge quickly generates happiness.” Use a verb from the verse.
    Answer: ज्ञानम् सुखम् आशु जनयति। = ज्ञानं सुखमाशु जनयति।

    6. Please list the ten synonyms of the word “आशु” (प्रातिपदिकम् “आशु” adjective (used in the neuter gender here), meaning “quick”) as given in the अमरकोश:।
    अथ शीघ्रं त्वरितं लघु क्षिप्रमरं द्रुतम् ।।१-१-६४।।
    सत्वरं चपलं तूर्णमविलम्बितमाशु च ।।१-१-६५।।
    (इति एकादश “शीघ्रस्य” नामानि)
    Answer:
    The ten synonyms (all adjectives, declined here in the neuter) of “आशु” are-
    1. शीघ्रम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “शीघ्र”)
    2. त्वरितम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “त्वरित”)
    3. लघु (प्रातिपदिकम् “लघु”)
    4. क्षिप्रम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “क्षिप्र”)
    5. अरम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “अर”)
    6. द्रुतम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “द्रुत”)
    7. सत्वरम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “सत्वर”)
    8. चपलम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “चपल”)
    9. तूर्णम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “तूर्ण”)
    10. अविलम्बितम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “अविलम्बित”)

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् was used to give जनयति + आशु = जनयत्याशु?
    Answer: 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    2. Which one was used in ज्ञानम् च = ज्ञानं च?
    Answer: 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः।

    3. Derive the form वासुदेवे (सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) from the प्रातिपदिकम् “वासुदेव”। It is declined like राम-शब्द:।
    Answer: वासुदेव + ङि by 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छस्टा….। ->
    By 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते letter ङ् gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा। ->
    By 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः it’s dropped. ->
    वासुदेव + इ -> By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः letters अ and इ are both substituted by ए -> वासुदेवे।
