जुह्वतः mAp

Today we will look at the form जुह्वतः from श्रीमद्भागवतम् SB 4-19-29

इत्यामन्त्र्य क्रतुपतिं विदुरास्यर्त्विजो रुषा ।
स्रुग्घस्तान्जुह्वतोऽभ्येत्य स्वयम्भूः प्रत्यषेधत ।। ४-१९-२९ ।।

Gita Press translation “Having addressed Pṛthu (the master of the sacrifice), in these words, O Vidura, his priests were indignantly proceeding to pour oblations into the sacred fire (with the avowed object of invoking Indra), with the sacrificial ladle in their hand, when Brahmā himself appeared (before them) and prevented them (from proceeding further).”

जुह्वत् is a शतृँ-प्रत्ययान्त-शब्द: derived from the हु-धातु:। Since this धातु: is in the जुहोत्यादि-गणः, the final form is derived through reduplication (अभ्यासः). Here, the जुहु of जुह्वत् gets अभ्यस्त-सञ्ज्ञा by 6-1-5 उभे अभ्यस्तम्

‘जुह्वत्’ gets प्रातिपदिकसंज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। The विवक्षा here is पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-बहुवचनम्। 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जुह्वत्’

(1) जुह्वत् + शस् ।

(2) जुह्वत् + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of शस् from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा ।

(3) जुह्वतः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः

Questions:

1. Why didn’t we have to consider 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः (and its निषेध: 7-1-78 नाभ्यस्ताच्छतुः) in this example?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-113 हलि लोपः been used?

3. Which प्रातिपदिकम् used in this verse has the घि-सञ्ज्ञा?

4. Which सूत्रम् has been used to do the घकारादेश: (in place of the हकार:) in स्रुग्घस्तान्?

5. Which other words (besides जुह्वतः) in the verse are ending in the शस्-प्रत्यय:? (They have समानाधिकरणम् with जुह्वतः)

6. Where has the टा-प्रत्यय: been used?

7. The अमरकोश: gives six synonyms for the word कोप: (प्रातिपदिकम् “कोप” masculine, meaning “anger”). One of them is रुट् (प्रातिपदिकम् “रुष्” feminine) used in this verse. Please list the other five.
कोपक्रोधाऽमर्षरोषप्रतिघा रुट्क्रुधौ स्त्रियौ ।।१-७-२६।।
(इति सप्त “कोपस्य” नामानि)

8. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“This (is) the eighth question.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “अष्टम” for “eighth.”

Easy questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् was used to get इति + आमन्त्र्य = इत्यामन्त्र्य?

2. Which one is necessary for क्रतुपति + अम् = क्रतुपतिम् (द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)?

3. Please do पदच्छेद: of विदुरास्यर्त्विज: and mention the relevant rules.

  1. Questions:
    1. Why didn’t we have to consider 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः (and its निषेध: 7-1-78 नाभ्यस्ताच्छतुः) in this example?
Because in the above example, the अङ्गम् is followed by शस्-प्रत्ययः, which does not have सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य। In order to apply 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः first, we need the प्रत्ययः that follows to have सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा। Only then its निषेध: 7-1-78 नाभ्यस्ताच्छतुः can be considered.

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-113 हलि लोपः been used?
    In अस्य (प्रातिपदिकम् “इदम्”, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)
    इदम् + ङस् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छस्टा…) = इद अ + ङस् (7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः ) = इद + ङस् (6-1-97 अतो गुणे)
    = इद + स्य (7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः) = अस्य (7-2-113 हलि लोपः)

    3. Which प्रातिपदिकम् used in this verse has the घि-सञ्ज्ञा?
    प्रातिपदिकम् “क्रतुपति” gets घि-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-7 शेषो घ्यसखि । The प्रातिपदिकम् “पति” does not get घि-सञ्ज्ञा when it is not a part of a समासः due to the नियम-सूत्रम् 1-4-8 पतिः समास एव। But here “पति” is part of the समास: “क्रतुपति” and hence the घि-सञ्ज्ञा is valid.

    4. Which सूत्रम् has been used to do the घकारादेश: (in place of the हकार:) in स्रुग्घस्तान्?
8-4-62 झयो होऽन्यतरस्याम् has been used to do the घकारादेश: (in place of the हकार:) in स्रुग्घस्तान्।
The meaning of 8-4-62 झयो होऽन्यतरस्याम् is as follows: When a झय् letter precedes, then in place of the letter ह् there is optionally a substitute which is पूर्वसवर्ण: (सवर्ण: with the preceding झय् letter). Even though this rule is optional, in practice it is generally applied.
In the present example we have the गकार: (which is a झय् letter) preceding the हकार: of “हस्तान्”। Therefore the हकार: takes the पूर्वसवर्णादेश: which is the घकार: (since it’s the closest substitute in the कवर्ग:)।

    5. Which other words (besides जुह्वतः) in the verse are ending in the शस्-प्रत्यय:? (They have समानाधिकरणम् with जुह्वतः)
    ऋत्विज: and स्रुग्घस्तान् are पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-बहुवचनम् and समानाधिकरणम् with जुह्वतः।

    6. Where has the टा-प्रत्यय: been used?
    The टा-प्रत्यय: been used in रुषा (रुष् + टा), प्रातिपदिकम् “रुष्”, स्त्रीलिङ्गे तृतीया-एकवचनम्।

    7. The अमरकोश: gives six synonyms for the word कोप: (प्रातिपदिकम् “कोप” masculine, meaning “anger”). One of them is रुट् (प्रातिपदिकम् “रुष्” feminine) used in this verse. Please list the other five.
    कोपक्रोधाऽमर्षरोषप्रतिघा रुट्क्रुधौ स्त्रियौ ।।१-७-२६।।
    (इति सप्त “कोपस्य” नामानि)
    The synonyms of कोप: are
    1. क्रोधः (प्रातिपदिकम् “क्रोध” masculine)
    2. अमर्षः (प्रातिपदिकम् “अमर्ष” masculine)
    3. रोषः (प्रातिपदिकम् “रोष” masculine)
    4. प्रतिघः (प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रतिघ” masculine)
    5. क्रुत् (प्रातिपदिकम् “क्रुध्” feminine)

    8. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“This (is) the eight question.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “अष्टम” for “eighth.”
    अयम् अष्टमः प्रश्नः = अयमष्टमः प्रश्नः।

    Easy questions:
    1. Which सूत्रम् was used to get इति + आमन्त्र्य = इत्यामन्त्र्य?
    6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    2. Which one is necessary for क्रतुपति + अम् = क्रतुपतिम् (द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)?
    6-1-107 अमि पूर्व:।

    3. Please do पदच्छेद: of विदुरास्यर्त्विज: and mention the relevant rules.
    The पदच्धेदः is विदुर, अस्य, ऋत्विज॥
    विदुर अस्य = विदुरास्य (6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः )
    अस्य ऋत्विज: = अस्यर्त्विज: (6-1-87 आद्गुणः along with 1-1-2 अदेङ् गुणः, 1-1-51 उरण् रँपरः and 1-1-50 स्थानेऽन्तरतमः)।

  2. 2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-113 हलि लोपः been used?
    Answer: In अस्य (प्रातिपदिकम् “इदम्”, दकारान्त-सर्वनाम-शब्दः, विवक्षा here is पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)।
    इदम् + ङस् (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छस्टा…) = इद अ + ङस् (7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः ) = इद + ङस् (6-1-97 अतो गुणे)
    = इद + स्य (7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः)
Note: Here we have “ङस्” which after अनुबन्ध-लोप: is an अजादि-प्रत्ययः, but it is replaced by “स्य” by 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः, making it a हलादि-प्रत्ययः।
    = अस्य (7-2-113 हलि लोपः)
Note: By 7-2-113 हलि लोपः, when a हलादि-विभक्ति: belonging to the आप्-प्रत्याहारः follows, only the ending दकारः of “इद्” should take लोपः as per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य। But the परिभाषा “नानर्थकेऽलोन्त्यविधिरनभ्यासविकारे।” prevents 1-1-52 from applying in this case because the term to be replaced – which is “इद्” – is devoid of meaning. Hence the entire term “इद्” takes लोपः instead of just the ending दकारः

    4. Which सूत्रम् has been used to do the घकारादेश: (in place of the हकार:) in स्रुग्घस्तान्?
    Answer: 8-4-62 झयो होऽन्यतरस्याम्।

    4) प्रतिघः (प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रतिघ” masculine)
    5) क्रुत् (प्रातिपदिकम् “क्रुध्” feminine)*

*Note: As per the वैजयन्ती-शब्द-कोश:, we also have the आकारान्त-स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिके “रुषा” and “क्रुधा” in addition to the हलन्त-स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिके “रुष्” and “क्रुध्” listed above.

    8. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“This (is) the eighth question.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “अष्टम” for “eighth.”
    Answer: अयम् अष्टमः प्रश्नः = अयमष्टमः प्रश्नः।

    3. Please do पदच्छेद: of विदुरास्यर्त्विज: and mention the relevant rules.
    Answer: The पदच्छेद: is विदुर, अस्य, ऋत्विजः।
    विदुर + अस्य = विदुरास्य by 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।
    अस्य + ऋत्विजः = अस्यर्त्विजः by 6-1-87 आद्गुणः, 1-1-51 उरण् रँपरः।
