महान्तम् mAs

Today we will look at the form महान्तम् from श्रीमद्वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् ।

Gita Press translation “In the western quarter too those very mighty princes beheld the great elephant guarding that quarter, Saumanasa (by name), that resembled a mountain (in size).”

‘महत्’ gets प्रातिपदिकसंज्ञा by 1-2-45 अर्थवदधातुरप्रत्ययः प्रातिपदिकम्। The विवक्षा here is पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘महत्’

, the प्रातिपदिकम् “महत्” will undergo the same operations as a शतृँ-प्रत्ययान्त-शब्द:। This makes it उगित् ।

By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः, the प्रातिपदिकम् “महत्” which is an उगित् takes the नुँम् augment when followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix. By 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, the नुँम्-आगम: is placed after the last अच् (the अकार: after the हकार:) in “महत्”।

1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of अम् from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा ।

By 6-4-10 सान्तमहतः संयोगस्य, since a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix which is not a सम्बुद्धिः follows, the letter preceding the नकारः in the word महत् is elongated.

  1. Questions:
    1. The declension of the प्रातिपदिकम् “महत्” in the masculine is –
    a) Similar to the declension of no other word in the language
    b) Similar to the declension of words ending in the शतृँ-प्रत्यय: like पचत्, गच्छत् etc.
    c) Similar to the declension of words ending in the मतुँप्-प्रत्यय: like धीमत्, श्रीमत् etc.
    d) Similar only to the declension of the word “बृहत्”

    a) Similar to the declension of no other word in the language.
    This is because of the special mention of “महत्” in 6-4-10 सान्तमहतः संयोगस्य। No other तकारान्त-प्रातिपदिकम् will decline like “महत्”। When पाणिनि: mentions a term specifically in a सूत्रम्, it means that there is something unique about that term, which the common rules cannot handle. For example, the mention of “स्त्री” in 1-4-4 नेयङुवङ्स्थानावस्त्री makes it a unique प्रातिपदिकम्।
