आत्महनः mNp

Today we will look at the form आत्महनः from श्रीमद्भागवतम् SB 11-5-17.

एत आत्महनोऽशान्ता अज्ञाने ज्ञानमानिनः।
सीदन्त्यकृतकृत्या वै कालध्वस्तमनोरथाः ।। ११-५-१७।।

Gita Press translation “They kill their own self, and, being devoid of peace of mind, regard ignorance as knowledge (confuse action for knowledge). They do not experience fulfillment and, being frustrated in their aims and thwarted by the Time-Spirit, become miserable.”

‘आत्महन्’ gets प्रातिपदिकसंज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च । The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आत्महन्’

(1) आत्महन् + जस् । As per 6-4-12 इन्हन्पूषार्यम्णां शौ the lengthening (ordained by 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ) of the penultimate letter of words ending in इन्, हन्, पूषन् and अर्यमन् should be done only when the affix शि follows, not when followed by other सर्वनामस्थानम् affixes. So even though जस्-प्रत्यय: has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा, 6-4-8 will not apply here.

(2) आत्महन् + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-7 चुटू and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of जस् from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा ।

(3) आत्महनः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः

  1. Questions:

    1. What kind of सूत्रम् is 6-4-12 इन्हन्पूषार्यम्णां शौ ?
    a) निषेध-सूत्रम् – A rule which negates another rule
    b) अपवाद-सूत्रम् – A rule which is an exception to another rule
    c) नियम-सूत्रम् – A rule which limits the application of another rule
    d) अतिदेश-सूत्रम् – A rule which extends the application of another rule

    A. नियम-सूत्रम् – since it limits the application of 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ।

    2. Please list the two synonyms of the word “आत्मा” (प्रातिपदिकम् “आत्मन्” masculine) as given in the अमर-कोश:।
    क्षेत्रज्ञ आत्मा पुरुषः ।।१-४-२९।।
    (इति त्रीणि “आत्मन:” नामानि)
    A. The synonyms are :
    क्षेत्रज्ञः (प्रातिपदिकम् “क्षेत्रज्ञ”, masculine)
    पुरुषः (प्रातिपदिकम् “पुरुष”, masculine)

    3. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“This verse is easy.” Use the प्रातिपदिकम् “सुगम” (adjective) for “easy.”
    A. एतत् पद्यम् सुगमम् = एतत् पद्यं सुगमम्।
    अथवा –
    अयम् श्लोकः सुगमः = अयं श्लोकः सुगमः।

    4. In this example, the अङ्गम् “आत्महन्” has:
    a) पद-सञ्ज्ञा
    b) भ-सञ्ज्ञा
    c) Neither पद-सञ्ज्ञा nor भ-सञ्ज्ञा
    d) Both पद-सञ्ज्ञा and भ-सञ्ज्ञा

    A. c) Neither पद-सञ्ज्ञा nor भ-सञ्ज्ञा, since the जस्-प्रत्यय: that follows is a सर्वनामस्थान-प्रत्यय: (by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य)। The अङ्गम् can have a पद-सञ्ज्ञा (1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनमस्थाने) or भ-सञ्ज्ञा (1-4-18 यचि भम्) only if it is followed by an affix which is not a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix.

    5. By which सूत्रम् does पाणिनि: define the term “उपधा”?
    A. 1-1-65 अलोऽन्त्यात् पूर्व उपधा। वृत्तिः “अन्त्यादल: पूर्वो वर्ण उपधा-संज्ञ: ।” The penultimate letter of a term is called उपधा।

    6. Why did 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः not apply in this example?
    A. For 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः to apply, the अङ्गम् should have भ-सञ्ज्ञा। Here ‘आत्महन्’ is followed by जस् which is a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix, and hence doesn’t have the भ-सञ्ज्ञा। Therefore 6-4-134 does not apply.

    8. Where is the ङि-प्रत्यय: used in this verse?
    A. The ङि-प्रत्यय: has been used in the word अज्ञाने।
    अज्ञान + ङि (4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्…) = अज्ञान + इ (1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते , 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः) = अज्ञाने (6-1-87 आद्गुणः)

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् do we use to get सीदन्ति + अकृतकृत्या: = सीदन्त्यकृतकृत्या: ?
    A. 6-1-77 इको यणचि

    2. Where has 6-1-109 एङः पदान्तादति been used in this verse?
    A. 6-1-109 एङः पदान्तादति has been used in आत्महनोऽशान्ता:।
    The पदच्छेदः is आत्महनः , अशान्ता:।
    The सन्धि-कार्यम् is
    आत्महनस् + अशान्ता: = आत्महनर् + अशान्ता: (8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः, 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः) = आत्महन उ + अशान्ता: (6-1-113 अतो रोरप्लुतादप्लुते) = आत्महनो + अशान्ता: (6-1-87 आद्गुणः) = आत्महनोऽशान्ता: (6-1-109 एङः पदान्तादति)

  2. 1. नियम-सूत्रम्। Since it limits the cases where the उपधा becoming दीर्घः (by 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ) . Now only the शि-प्रत्यय: can cause उपधा-दीर्घ:।

    2. The synonyms are क्षेत्रज्ञः (m) and पुरुषः(m).

    3. अयं श्लोकः सुगमः।

    4. Neither पद-संज्ञा nor भ-संज्ञा, since जस् has सर्वनामस्थानम्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य।

    5. पाणिनिः defines the term उपधा in 1-1-65 अलोऽन्त्यात् पूर्व उपधा। The penultimate letter is called उपधा।

    6. 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः applies only if a स्वादि-प्रत्यय: which is not सर्वनामस्थानम् and which either begins with a यकारः or a vowel (अच्), follows. Here जस् has सर्वनामस्थानम्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य, hence 6-4-134 does not apply.

    7. दुःखहा (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दुःखहन्’, अत्र पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)
    युक्ताहारविहारस्य युक्तचेष्टस्य कर्मसु |
    युक्तस्वप्नावबोधस्य योगो भवति दुःखहा || 6-17||

    8. The ङि-प्रत्यय: has been used in the word अज्ञाने।
