वशी mNs

Today we will look at the form वशी from श्रीमद्वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् ।

इक्ष्वाकुवंशप्रभवो रामो नाम जनैः श्रुतः |
नियतात्मा महावीर्यो द्युतिमान् धृतिमान् वशी || १-१-८||

Gita Press translation “There is one descended in the line of Ikṣwāku, and known by men by the name of Rāma. He has fully controlled his mind, is very powerful, radiant and resolute and has brought his senses under control.”

‘वशिन्’ gets प्रातिपदिकसंज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च । The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वशिन्’

(1) वशिन् + सुँ ।

(2) वशीन् + सुँ । By 6-4-13 सौ च, the penultimate letter of words ending in इन्, हन्, पूषन् and अर्यमन् is lengthened when the सुँ affix – which is not सम्बुद्धि: – follows. Since वशिन् ends in इन् we can use this सूत्रम्।

(3) वशीन् + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

(4) वशीन् । सकार-लोपः by 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात्‌ सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल्

(5) वशी । By 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य, the ending नकारः of a पदम् is dropped when the पदम् also has the designation प्रातिपदिकम्।

Questions:

1. Why did पाणिनि: have to compose the सूत्रम् 6-4-13 सौ च ? Why not just use 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ in step 2?

2. Please list the eight synonyms for the word “वंश:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “वंश” masculine – meaning “lineage”) as given in the अमर-कोश:।
संततिर्गोत्रजननकुलान्यभिजनान्वयौ ।
वंशोऽन्ववायः संतानः ।।२-७-१।।
(इति नव “वंशस्य” नामानि)

3. How do you say this in Sanskrit?
“How many trees in this garden?” Use the प्रातिपदिकम् “कति” for “how many” and the प्रातिपदिकम् “आराम” for garden.

4. Where is word “वशी” used in the गीता (Chapter 5)?

5. Where is the सूत्रम् 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ used in this verse?

6. Under the सूत्रम् 6-4-13 सौ च, the काशिका says “असम्बुद्धौ इति किम्? हे दण्डिन्।” Please explain what this means.

7. Which सूत्रम् used in this example belongs to the “अङ्गस्य” अधिकार:?

8. How did the term “वशीन्” get the पद-सञ्ज्ञा (which is required to apply 8-2-7) by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् in step 5, even though the सुँ-प्रत्यय: has already taken लोप: by the prior steps?

Easy questions:

1. Which प्रत्यय: was used in the form “जनैः”?
a) सुँ b) शस् c) भिस् d) भ्यस्

2. Which word in the verse translates to “known”?

  1. Questions:
    1. Why did पाणिनि: have to compose the सूत्रम् 6-4-13 सौ च ? Why not just use 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ in step 2?

By 6-4-12 इन्हन्पूषार्यम्णां शौ, the lengthening (ordained by 6-4-8) of the penultimate letter of words ending in इन्, हन्, पूषन् and अर्यमन् should be done only when the affix शि follows, not when followed by other सर्वनामस्थानम् affixes. (6-4-12 restricts the domain of 6-4-8.) In order to bring in the दीर्घः for the penultimate letter of these words (ending in इन्, हन्, पूषन् and अर्यमन्) when the सुँ affix – which is not सम्बुद्धि: – follows, पाणिनिः had to compose 6-4-13 सौ च।

    2. Please list the eight synonyms for the word “वंश:” (प्रातिपदिकम् “वंश” masculine – meaning “lineage”) as given in the अमर-कोश:।
    संततिर्गोत्रजननकुलान्यभिजनान्वयौ ।
    वंशोऽन्ववायः संतानः ।।२-७-१।।

The eight synonyms of वंश: are:

    3. How do you say this in Sanskrit?
“How many trees in this garden?” Use the प्रातिपदिकम् “कति” for “how many” and the प्रातिपदिकम् “आराम” for garden.
    अस्मिन् आरामे कति वृक्षाः ? = अस्मिन्नारामे कति वृक्षाः ?

    4. Where is word “वशी” used in the गीता (Chapter 5)?
    Chapter 5 verse 13
    सर्वकर्माणि मनसा संन्यस्यास्ते सुखं वशी
    नवद्वारे पुरे देही नैव कुर्वन्न कारयन् ।।

    5. Where is the सूत्रम् 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ used in this verse?
    In नियतात्मा

    7. Which सूत्रम् used in this example belongs to the “अङ्गस्य” अधिकार:?
“अङ्गस्य” अधिकार: starts from 6-4-1 and goes till the end of chapter 7 (7-4-97).
    The सूत्रम् 6-4-13 सौ च used in this example belongs to the “अङ्गस्य” अधिकार:।

    8. How did the term “वशीन्” get the पद-सञ्ज्ञा (which is required to apply 8-2-7) by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् in step 5, even though the सुँ-प्रत्यय: has already taken लोप: by the prior steps?
By 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम् , even though the सुँ affix takes लोपः(elision), the operations that are ordained by that affix, can still be carried out. Hence 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् can still apply to give the पद-सञ्ज्ञा to the अङ्गम्।

    Easy questions:
    1. Which प्रत्यय: was used in the form “जनैः”?
    a) सुँ b) शस् c) भिस् d) भ्यस्
    c) भिस् (which was replaced by “ऐस्” as per 7-1-9 अतो भिस ऐस्)

    2. Which word in the verse translates to “known”?
    श्रुतः।

  2. 2. संततिः(f), गोत्रम्(n), जननम्(n), कुलम्(n), अभिजनः(m), अन्वयः(m), अन्ववायः(m), संतानः(m)।

    3. अस्मिन् आरामे कति तरवः ? = अस्मिन्नारामे कति तरवः ?

    4. Verse 5.13
    सर्वकर्माणि मनसा संन्यस्यास्ते सुखं वशी

    5. The सूत्रम् 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ has been used in नियतात्मा – प्रातिपदिकम् ‘नियतात्मन्’

    6. “असम्बुद्धौ इति किम्? हे दण्डिन्।” – In the vocative case if the penultimate vowel (उपधा) is made दीर्घः, then we will not get the desired form हे दण्डिन्। This explains the reason why 6-4-13 is made applicable only in the non-vocative case (असम्बुद्धौ)।

    7. 6-4-13 सौ च belongs to the “अङ्गस्य” अधिकार:।

    8. By 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्, even though the सुँ-प्रत्यय: has already taken लोप:, वशीन् will still get the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम्।
