चतुर्णाम् mGp

Today we will look at the form चतुर्णाम् from श्रीमद्वाल्मीकि-रामायणम्

चतुर्णामात्मजानां हि प्रीतिः परमिका मम || १-२०-११|| – second half

ज्येष्ठे धर्मप्रधाने च न रामं नेतुमर्हसि || १-२०-१२|| – first half

Gita Press translation “Of (all) the four sons my supreme affection is truly speaking fastened on the eldest, in whom piety is predominant. (Hence) you ought not to take away Rāma.”

‘चतुर्’ gets प्रातिपदिकसंज्ञा by 1-2-45 अर्थवदधातुरप्रत्ययः प्रातिपदिकम्. The विवक्षा here is पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-बहुवचनम्. 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘चतुर्‘.

(1) चतुर् + आम् ।

(2) चतुर् + नुँट् आम् । By 7-1-55 षट्चतुर्भ्यश्च, the आम् affix gets नुँट् as an augment.

(3) चतुर् + नाम् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः.

(4) चतुर्णाम् । By 8-4-1 रषाभ्यां नो णः समानपदे , a नकारः that (immediately) follows a रेफः or a षकारः in a single पदम्, gets णकारः as a replacement.

Questions:

1. Which प्रातिपदिकम् among the ones that we’ve studied so far, has the षट्-सञ्ज्ञा ?

2. In the सूत्रम् 8-4-1 रषाभ्यां नो णः समानपदे what is the प्रातिपदिकम् in “न:” ? Which विभक्ति: has been used? How about in “णः” ?

3. Why didn’t पाणिनि: give the षट्-सञ्ज्ञा to “चतुर्” also? That way he wouldn’t have to mention it separately in the सूत्रम् 7-1-55 षट्चतुर्भ्यश्च।
The answer is given in the काशिका as follows – “रेफान्तायाः सङ्ख्यायाः षट्संज्ञा न विहिता, षड्भ्यो लुक् ७।१।२२ इति लुग् मा भूत्।” – Please explain.

4. The अमरकोश: gives 12 words that mean “आनन्द:” . One of them is प्रीति: (used in this verse.) Can you list five others?
मुत्प्रीतिः प्रमदो हर्षः प्रमोदाऽऽमोदसम्मदाः ।।१-४-२४।।
स्यादानन्दथुरानन्दशर्मशातसुखानि च ।
(इति द्वादश “आनन्दस्य” नामानि)

5. Which word in the verse translates to “on the eldest”?

6. Using some words from this verse, can you construct the following sentence in Sanskrit?
“You ought to take the two cows.” Use the प्रातिपदिकम् “गो” for cow.

7. Which is the other (optional) final form (besides चतुर्णाम्) that is possible in this example?

8. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-3 नामि been used in this verse?

9. Which other सूत्रम् have we studied that prescribes the नुँट्-आगम: for the आम्-प्रत्यय:? Why couldn’t we use that in this example?

Easy questions:

1. By which परिभाषा-सूत्रम् did the नुँट्-आगम: attach to the beginning (and not in the end or in the middle) of the term “आम्” is step 2?

2. Why didn’t the सूत्रम् 7-2-99 त्रिचतुरोः स्त्रियां तिसृचतसृ apply in this example?

  1. Namaste,
    1. कति-शब्दः। (The term “कति” is formed from the प्रातिपदिकम् “किम्” by adding the डति-प्रत्यय:।)
By 1-1-23 बहुगणवतुडति संख्या, “कति” gets सङ्ख्या-सञ्ज्ञा। (The terms “बहु”, “गण” and the words ending in the वतुँ-प्रत्यय: and डति-प्रत्यय: get the designation संख्या।)
Now by 1-1-25 डति च , “कति” gets षट्-सञ्ज्ञा (Those terms that have the संख्या-सञ्ज्ञा and end in the डति-प्रत्यय: get the षट्-सञ्ज्ञा।)

“कति” is a सङ्ख्या ending in the डति-प्रत्यय: and so it gets the designation षट्।

    2. The वृत्तिः of 8-4-1 रषाभ्यां नो णः समानपदे is “एकपदस्थाभ्यां रेफषकाराभ्यां परस्य नस्य णः स्यात्।”
    When a नकारः follows a रेफः or a षकारः in a single पदम्, it gets णकारः as a replacement.
    So नः (न् + ङस्) has to be षष्ठी-एकवचनम् of ‘न्’ by 1-1-49 षष्ठी स्थानेयोगा and णः (ण + सुँ) is प्रथमा-एकवचनम् of ‘ण’ since it comes in as the आदेशः। Note: The अकार: at the end of “ण” (= ण् + अ) is only उच्चारणार्थ: (for the sake of pronunciation.) So “ण” only means णकार:।

    3. “रेफान्तायाः सङ्ख्यायाः षट्संज्ञा न विहिता, षड्भ्यो लुक् ७।१।२२ इति लुग् मा भूत्।” – For a term that ends in a रेफ: (रेफान्तः) and has the designation of सङ्ख्या , षट्-सञ्ज्ञा is not ordained ( न विहिता). The reason is to avoid the लुक् elision by 7-1-22 षड्भ्यो लुक्। If ‘चतुर्’ got the षट्-सञ्ज्ञा, we would have got the undesired form चतुर् = चतु: by 7-1-22 when जस् or शस् follows.
So पाणिनिः had no choice but to mention “चतुर्” separately in the सूत्रम् 7-1-55 षट्चतुर्भ्यश्च and not include “चतुर्” in the षट्-सञ्ज्ञा।

Note: The षट्-सञ्ज्ञा gets its name form the fact that six (षट्) terms are included in this सञ्ज्ञा – namely “पञ्चन्”, “षष्”, “सप्तन्”, “अष्टन्”, “नवन्” and “दशन्” . Now if “चतुर्” were to be included in the षट्-सञ्ज्ञा, then there would be a total of seven terms and the name षट्-सञ्ज्ञा would itself have to be changed!

    4. The other 11 synonyms for आनन्दः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आनन्द’, masculine) are:

*The formation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आनन्दथु’ is similar to that of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वेपथु’ used in the गीता 1-29. The सूत्रम् used is 3-3-89 ट्वितोऽथुच् ।

    5. ज्येष्ठे

    6. (द्वे) गावौ नेतुम् अर्हसि = (द्वे) गावौ नेतुमर्हसि।
“द्वे” is not really required because गावौ being a dual form, it can only mean “two cows.”

    7. By 8-4-46 अचो रहाभ्यां द्वे, we get the optional form चतुर्ण्णाम् .
“A यर् letter that follows a रेफः or a हकारः, which in turn follows a vowel, is optionally doubled.”

    8. In आत्मजानाम्
= आत्मजानाम् (6-4-3 नामि – The ending vowel of an अङ्गम् gets elongated if followed by the term “नाम्” .)

    9. 7-1-54 ह्रस्वनद्यापो नुट्, the वृत्तिः is ” ह्रस्वान्ताद् नद्यान्ताद् आबन्ताच्चाङ्गात् परस्यामो नुँडागम:।” The affix आम् takes the augment नुँट् when it follows a प्रातिपदिकम् which either ends in a short vowel or has the नदी-संज्ञा or ends in the feminine affix आप्. Here ‘चतुर्’ is not ह्रस्वान्तम्, नद्यन्तम् or आबन्तम्। So we cannot apply 7-1-54 here.

    Easy questions:
1.By 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ . An augment which is marked with ट् as an इत् will attach to the beginning of the term in the genitive case. On the other hand, an augment which is marked with क् as an इत् will attached to the end of the term in the genitive case. Since the नुँट्-आगम: has टकार: as an इत् , it attached to the beginning of the term “आम्” .

    2. Because the विवक्षा here is पुंलिङ्गे and not स्त्रियाम्।

    Thank you, Satishji.
