सर्वाणि nNp

Today we will look at the form सर्वाणि from श्रीमद्वाल्मीकि-रामायणम्

Gita Press translation “Let perpetual heavenly bliss be the lot of this Triśaṅku in his physical body and also let all the lunar mansions created by me be abiding. ”

The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्. 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सर्व‘.

‘सर्व’ gets सर्वनामसंज्ञा as it is listed in 1-1-27 सर्वादीनि सर्वनामानि.

7-1-20 जश्शसोः शिः gives शि as आदेशः to जस्.

When a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix follows, the neuter bases that end in a झल् letter or an अच् (vowel) get the नुँम् augment by 7-1-72 नपुंसकस्य झलचः. As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, the नुँम्-आगम: is placed after the last अच् (the अकार: after the वकार:) in “सर्व” .

The letter न् is replaced by ण् by 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि.

Questions:

1. Do पदच्छेद: of स्वर्गोऽस्तु – please mention the relevant rules.

2. Generally speaking, the (singular, dual and plural) forms in the द्वितीया-विभक्ति: are the same as those in the प्रथमा-विभक्ति:, for any नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम्। Which rules in the अष्टाध्यायी can we use to support this statement?

apply after step 1?

4. Which word in the verse translates to “perpetual”?

5. Where is the सूत्रम् 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति used in this verse?

6. How many terms are listed in the सर्वादि-गण:?

7. From where does the अनुवृत्ति: of “दीर्घ:” come in to 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ ?

8. Why did the शि-आदेश: replace the entire स्थानी “जस्” in step 2? Is it because “शि” has the शकार: as an इत्? Or because “शि” is an अनेकाल्-आदेश: (an आदेश: which has more than one letter)? (Reference – 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य)

Easy questions:

1. Where is the सूत्रम् 6-1-77 इको यणचि used in this verse?

2. From where does the अनुवृत्ति: of नपुंसकात् come in to 7-1-20 जश्शसोः शिः ?

  1. 1. Do पदच्छेद: of स्वर्गोऽस्तु – please mention the relevant rules.
    स्वर्गः + अस्तु (Satishji – I haven’t done विसर्ग-सन्धि-प्रकरणम् yet, but it is my general observation (looking at forms like शिव: + अहम् = शिवोऽहम्) that when there is an ओकार: followed by an अवग्रह: then the पदच्छेद: may be a विसर्ग: that is preceded and followed by an अकार:)

    4. Which word in the verse translates to “perpetual”?

    Easy question:
    1. Where is the सूत्रम् 6-1-77 इको यणचि used in this verse?

    kalyani.

  2. Questions:
    1. Do पदच्छेद: of स्वर्गोऽस्तु – please mention the relevant rules.

    The पदच्छेदः is स्वर्गः, अस्तु
    The सन्धि-कार्यम् is as follows:

    4. Which word in the verse translates to “perpetual”?

    5. Where is the सूत्रम् 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति used in this verse?
    In त्रिशङ्कोः – the प्रातिपदिकम् is “त्रिशङ्कु” – विवक्षा is षष्ठी-एकवचनम्
    Derivation is as follows:

    6. How many terms are listed in the सर्वादि-गण:?
    35 terms are listed in 1-1-26 सर्वादीनि सर्वनामानि

    Because “शि” is an अनेकाल्-आदेश: – that is an आदेश: which has more than one letter. In this case the शि-आदेश: has two letters – शकार: and इकार: .

    Objection: शि-आदेश: is not अनेकाल् . As per the परिभाषा “नानुबन्धकृतमनेकाल्त्वम्” we have to first remove the शकार: which is an इत् letter as per 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and then only इकार: remains. It is no longer अनेकाल् but because शकार: was an इत् we can use 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य to do the सर्वादेश: .

    Answer: No, this is not the case for the following reason. We can only use 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते if the शकार: is प्रत्ययादि: . Here the शि-आदेश: will get स्थानिवद्-भाव: (as per 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ) only after the substitution is done and शि has replaced जस्-प्रत्यय: . After that the शकार: will be प्रत्यायादि: and 1-3-8 can be used. Before the actual substitution takes place, the शकार: does not have the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा and hence the शि-आदेश: is अनेकाल् .

    Easy questions:

    1. Where is the सूत्रम् 6-1-77 इको यणचि used in this verse?

    2. From where does the अनुवृत्ति: of नपुंसकात् come in to 7-1-20 जश्शसोः शिः ?
    From the prior rule 7-1-19

  3. Here is my attempt at अन्वय: for this verse –

    2. The following rules create the same forms in the द्वितीया-विभक्ति: as those in the प्रथमा-विभक्ति:, for any नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् .

    1. 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌, the affixes सुँ and अम् that follow a neuter अङ्गम् take the लुक् elision. Thus सुँ and अम् are treated equally. So also 7-1-24 अतोऽम् as well as 7-1-25 अद्ड् डतरादिभ्यः पञ्चभ्यः apply equally to सुँ and अम् .
    2. 7-1-19 नपुंसकाच्च, the affixes औ and औट् take शी as their replacement when following a neuter अङ्गम्. Thus औ and औट् are treated equally.
    3. 7-1-20 जश्शसोः शिः , the affixes जस् and शस् get शि as the replacement when they follow a neuter अङ्गम्. Thus जस् and शस् are treated equally.

    We can see that the above rules make the singular, dual and plural forms in प्रथमा-विभक्ति: and द्वितीया-विभक्तिः the same, for any नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् .

    3. 7-1-17 जसः शी could have applied after step 1, but since 7-1-20 जश्शसोः शिः is पर-कार्यम् (a later rule in the अष्टाध्यायी) it overrules 7-1-17 as per 1-4-2 विप्रतिषेधे परं कार्यम् |

    5. त्रिशङ्कु + ङस् =>1-4-7 शेषो घ्यसखि , gives the घि-संज्ञा =>7-3-111 gives us the गुणादेश:=>
    त्रिशङ्को + ङस् =>6-1-110 gives us पूर्वरूप-एकादेश: => त्रिशङ्कोस् =>त्रिशङ्कोस् + अस्य=>
    8-2-66 =>त्रिशङ्कोर् + अस्य = त्रिशङ्कोरस्य .

    6. There are 35 terms in the सर्वादि-गण:

    7. The “दीर्घः” अनुवृत्तिः goes on for quite a long time… 🙂 …all the way from 6-3-111.
