गौः fNs

Today we will look at the form गौः from श्रीमद्भागवतम् SB 10-1-18

Gita Press translation “Appearing as a disconsolate cow, its face wet with tears and piteously bellowing, she sought the presence of Brahma (the supreme ruler) and told him of her distress.”

‘गो ‘ gets प्रातिपदिकसंज्ञा by 1-2-45 अर्थवदधातुरप्रत्ययः प्रातिपदिकम्. The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्. 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप् mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् “गो”.

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्। ‘सुँ’ gets सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य . By 7-1-90 गोतो णित्‌ – The सर्वनामस्थानम् affixes following the letter ‘ओ’ behave as if they have the letter ‘ण्’ as an indicatory letter.

By 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति , the ending vowel of the अङ्गम् gets a वृद्धिः substitute, when followed by a प्रत्ययः that has ञकारः or a णकारः as an इत्

Questions:

1. Under the सूत्रम् 7-1-90 गोतो णित्‌ there is a वार्त्तिकम् which says “ओतो णिद् इति वाच्यम्” – what does this mean?

2. There is another वार्त्तिकम् on the सूत्रम् 7-1-90 गोतो णित् which says “विहितविशेषणं च” – what does this mean?

3. Where is the सूत्रम् 6-1-110 ङसिङसोश्च used in this verse?

4. If पाणिनि: had not mentioned “अच:” in the सूत्रम् 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति , then how would it change the interpretation of this rule?

5. There is one सर्वनाम-शब्द: in the verse. Which one is that?

6. Which word in the verse translates to “piteously”?

7. From where does the अनुवृत्ति: of सर्वनाम-स्थानम् come into the सूत्रम् 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य ?

8. Where does the प्रातिपदिकम् “गो” come in Chapter 15 of the गीता ?

  1. Namaste Satish Mahodaya:

    1. Under the सूत्रम् 7-1-90 गोतो णित्‌ there is a वार्त्तिकम् which says “ओतो णिद् इति वाच्यम्” – what does this mean?

This वार्तिकम् tells us that the सूत्रम् should be taken as “ओतो णित्” . In order to get the forms like सुद्यौः, सुद्यावौ, सुद्यावः for the प्रातिपदिकम् “सुद्यो” (and others which may end in an ओकार:), we will have to extend the rule for सर्वनामस्थान-प्रत्ययाः that follow a प्रातिपदिकान्त-ओकारः, instead of just limiting it to the ओकारः of गो-शब्दः।

    2. There is another वार्त्तिकम् on the सूत्रम् 7-1-90 गोतो णित् which says “विहितविशेषणं च” – what does this mean?

This वार्तिकम् adds the विशेषणम् (adjective) “विहितम्” to सर्वनामस्थानम्. Here the सुँ-प्रत्यय: (which has सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा) is prescribed (विहितम्) after the प्रातिपदिकम् “भानु” which is not ending in an ओकार: . So as per this वार्त्तिकम् it will not be णित्-वत्.
If this वार्त्तिकम् were not there then at the next step – भानु + सुँ = भानो + सुँ (by 7-3-108 ह्रस्वस्य गुणः) we would have the सुँ-प्रत्यय: following an ओकार: and would become णित्-वत् which is undesirable. So that is why the वार्त्तिकम् adds the condition विहितम् “prescribed” instead of the usual default परम् (following). In order to become णित्-वत् , the सर्वनामस्थान-प्रत्यय: has to be originally prescribed after an ओकारान्त-प्रातिपदिकम् and not just appear after an ओकार: at a later step.

    Taking these two वार्तिके into consideration, the वृत्तिः for 7-1-90 गोतो णित्‌ is ओकारात् विहितं सर्वनामस्थानं णिद्वत् ।

    3. Where is the सूत्रम् 6-1-110 ङसिङसोश्च used in this verse?

    In forming the पदम् विभोः, the सूत्रम् 6-1-110 ङसिङसोश्च is being used.
    by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः and 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः , we get विभु + अस्
6-1-110 ङसिङसोश्च , in place of ओ and अ, we get the preceding ओकार: as the single substitute. We get विभोस्
Using 8-2-66 and 8-3-15, the final form is विभोः

    4. If पाणिनि: had not mentioned “अच:” in the सूत्रम् 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति , then how would it change the interpretation of this rule?

If अच: had not been mentioned by पाणिनि: then the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-3 इको गुणवृद्धी would have dictated that only an इक् (इ, उ, ऋ, ऌ) will be subject to वृद्धि-आदेश: This would have prevented 7-2-115 from being used in cases like ours. So that is why पाणिनि: specifically says अच: to over-ride 1-1-3 इको गुणवृद्धी . Now an अङ्गम् ending in any अच् (vowel), not just इक्, can take a वृद्धि-आदेश: if the following प्रत्यय: has a ञकार: or a णकार: as an इत् .

    6. Which word in the verse translates to “piteously”?

    8. Where does the प्रातिपदिकम् “गो” come in Chapter 15 of the गीता ?

    गामाविश्य च भूतानि धारयाम्यहमोजसा
    पुष्णामि चौषधीः सर्वाः सोमोभूत्वा रसात्मकः । Chapter 15- Sloka 13

    गाम् -> The प्रातिपदिकम् is ‘गो’ , the विवक्षा here is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्
    गो + अम्
= गाम् (6-1-93 औतोऽम्शसोः, आकारः shall be the single substitute in the place of an ओकारः and the following अकारः of affixes अम् and शस्.)
    ———————————————-

  2. 1. Under the सूत्रम् 7-1-90 गोतो णित्‌ there is a वार्त्तिकम् which says “ओतो णिद् इति वाच्यम्” – what does this mean?

If गोतो णित् meant applying णिद्वद्-भावः in the case of गोशब्दः only, then forms like ‘सुद्यौ:’ (of the प्रातिपदिकम् “सुद्यो”) can not be derived. By this वार्त्तिकम् — “ओतो णिद् इति वाच्यम्” we can also apply this rule for other ओकारान्त-शब्दाः (like “सुद्यो”), not just for the गोशब्दः .

    3. Where is the सूत्रम् 6-1-110 ङसिङसोश्च used in this verse?

    5. There is one सर्वनाम-शब्द: in the verse. Which one is that?

    तस्मै — चतुर्थी-एकवचनम of तद् (सर्वनाम-शब्द:), here it is used पुंलिङ्गे

    6. Which word in the verse translates to “piteously”?

    7. From where does the अनुवृत्ति: of सर्वनाम-स्थानम् come into the सूत्रम् 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य ?

    From 1-1-41 शि सर्वनामस्थानम् which is a सञ्ज्ञा-सूत्रम्

    8. Where does the प्रातिपदिकम् “गो” come in Chapter 15 of the गीता ?

    गाम् — द्वितीया-एकवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “गो”which is derived from the धातु: “गम्” . Here in this verse गाम् will mean पृथिवीम् .
