जनताः fNp

Today we will look at the form जनताः fNp from शिशुपालवधम् 5.14.

Translation – Groups of people having left the existing shade of trees, even though it was abundant, took to the upcoming (shade). Indeed, every one rejects a diminishing shelter even though it is near, and instead seeks a growing one, even if it is not at hand.

जनानां समूहः = जनता – a group of people
In the verses the विवक्षा is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्। Hence the form is जनताः।

(1) जन आम् + तल् । By 4-2-43 ग्रामजनबन्धुभ्यस्तल् – To denote a collection/group, the तद्धित: affix ‘तल्’ may be optionally applied following a syntactically related पदम् in which the सन्धिः operations have been performed, provided the पदम् ends in a sixth case affix and has the word ‘ग्राम’ or ‘जन’ or ‘बन्धु’ as its base.

Note: The affix ‘तल्’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 4-2-43 is a अपवादः to the default affix ‘अण्’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 4-2-37 तस्य समूहः।

(2) जन आम् + त । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

Note: ‘जन आम् + त’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः to apply in the next step.

(3) जनत । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

Words ending in the तद्धित-affix ‘तल्’ are used in the language in the feminine gender. Hence we form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जनता’ by adding the feminine affix टाप् as follows –

(4) जनत + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि ‘अज’ etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in the letter ‘अ’ get the affix टाप् in the feminine gender.

(5) जनत + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(6) जनता । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः
Note: The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जनता’ declines like रमा-शब्दः।

Similarly, we can derive the following forms –
१) ग्रामाणां समूहः = ग्रामता – a group of villages
२) बन्धूनां समूहः = बन्धुता – a group of relatives

राजकम् nAs

Today we will look at the form राजकम् nAs from शिशुपालवधम् 2.102.

TranslationHaving thus agitated the entire group of kings for the destruction of the sacrifice, alas! you have become the first enemy of the one (Yudhiṣṭhira) who has no enemy.

राजकम् = राज्ञां समूहः – a group of kings

In the verse the विवक्षा is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्। Hence the form is राजकम्।

(1) राजन् आम् + वुञ् । By 4-2-39 गोत्रोक्षोष्ट्रोरभ्रराजराजन्यराजपुत्रवत्समनुष्याजाद्वुञ् – To denote a collection/group, the तद्धित: affix ‘वुञ्’ may be optionally applied following a syntactically related पदम् in which the सन्धिः operations have been performed, provided the पदम् ends in a sixth case affix and has a base that either denotes a गोत्रम् (family/lineage) or is the word ‘उक्षन्’, ‘उष्ट्र’, ‘उरभ्र’, ‘राजन्’, ‘राजन्य’, ‘राजपुत्र’, ‘वत्स’, ‘मनुष्य’ or ‘अज’।

Note: The affix ‘वुञ्’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 4-2-39 is a अपवादः to the default affix ‘अण्’ prescribed by the सूत्रम् 4-2-37 तस्य समूहः।

(2) राजन् आम् + वु । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः ।

Note: The letter ‘ञ्’ as a इत् in the affix ‘वुञ्’ facilitates the application of the सूत्रम् 7-2-117 तद्धितेष्वचामादेः। But in the present example, since the first vowel (‘आ’) of the term ‘राजन्’ already has the designation वृद्धिः (ref: 1-1-1 वृद्धिरादैच्), 7-2-117 has no effect here.

(3) राजन् आम् + अक । By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ – The affixes ‘यु’ and ‘वु’ are substituted respectively by ‘अन’ and ‘अक’। As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य the entire affix ‘वु’ is replaced by ‘अक’।

Note: ‘राजन् आम् + अक’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः to apply in the next step.

(4) राजन् + अक । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: The अङ्गम् ‘राजन्’ has the designation ‘भ’ here by 1-4-18 यचि भम्। This allows 6-4-144 to apply in the next step.

(5) राज् + अक = राजक । By 6-4-144 नस्तद्धिते – The ‘टि’ portion (ref. 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि) of a अङ्गम् (base) is elided provided the अङ्गम् –
i) has the designation ‘भ’ (ref. 1-4-18 यचि भम्)
ii) ends in the letter ‘न्’ and
iii) is followed by a तद्धित: affix
Note: The ‘अन्’ part of the अङ्गम् ‘राजन्’ has the designation ‘टि’ by the सूत्रम् 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि – That part of a group of sounds which begins with the last vowel of the group (and goes to the end of the group) gets the designation ‘टि’।

(6) राजक । Note: Words ending in तद्धिताः affixes denoting a collection are used in the language in the neuter gender. Hence the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘राजक’ declines like वन-शब्दः।

हास्तिकानि

Today we will look at the form हास्तिकानि nNp from शिशुपालवधम् 5.30.

आलोलपुष्करमुखोल्लसितैरभीक्ष्णमुक्षाम्बभूवुरभितो वपुरम्बुवर्षैः ।

Translation – The herds of elephants repeatedly sprinkled (their) body with showers of water that were tossed up by the snouts at the tips of (their) swinging trunks, as though with heaps of beautiful pearls on their foreheads that were thrown out by the force of long drawn exhalation resulting from exhaustion.

हस्तिनां समूहः = हास्तिकम् – a herd of elephants
In the verses the विवक्षा is प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्। Hence the form is हास्तिकानि।

(1) हस्तिन् आम् + ठक् । By 4-2-47 अचित्तहस्तिधेनोष्ठक् – To denote a collection/group, the तद्धित: affix ‘ठक्’ may be optionally applied following a syntactically related पदम् in which the सन्धिः operations have been performed, provided the पदम् ends in a genitive case affix and has as its base a term denoting an inanimate object, or the term हस्तिन् or ‘धेनु’।

(2) हस्तिन् आम् + ठ् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः । The letter ‘अ’ in the affix ‘ठक्’ is is only for the sake of pronunciation (उच्चारणार्थ:)।
Note: The fact that the सूत्रम् 7-3-50 ठस्येकः (used in step 4) specifically prescribes the substitution ‘इक’ in place of the letter ‘ठ्’ occurring in the beginning of an affix, obviously implies that this letter ‘ठ्’ does not get the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-7 चुटू‌। Because, otherwise the letter ‘ठ्’ would be elided by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
Note: ‘हस्तिन् आम् + ठ्’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः to apply in the next step.

(3) हस्तिन् + ठ् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

(4) हस्तिन् + इक । By 7-3-50 ठस्येकः – ‘इक’ is substituted in place of the letter ‘ठ्’, when it follows a अङ्गम्।

Note: The affix ‘ठक्’ is a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as इत्)। This allows 7-2-118 किति च to apply in the next step.

(5) हास्तिन् + इक । By 7-2-118 किति च – The first vowel among the vowels of a अङ्गम् which is followed by a तद्धित: affix (ref. 4-1-76 तद्धिताः) which is either a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) or a णित् (has the letter ‘ण्’ as a इत्) takes the वृद्धि: (ref. 1-1-1 वृद्धिरादैच्) substitute.

Note: The अङ्गम् ‘हास्तिन्’ gets the भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम् which allows 6-4-144 नस्तद्धिते to apply in the next step.

(6) हास्त् + इक । By 6-4-144 नस्तद्धिते – The ‘टि’ portion (ref. 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि) of a अङ्गम् (base) is elided provided the अङ्गम् –
i) has the designation ‘भ’ (ref. 1-4-18 यचि भम्)
ii) ends in the letter ‘न्’ and
iii) is followed by a तद्धित: affix
Note: The ‘इन्’ part of the अङ्गम् ‘हास्तिन्’ has the designation ‘टि’ by the सूत्रम् 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि – That part of a group of sounds which begins with the last vowel of the group (and goes to the end of the group) gets the designation ‘टि’।

= हास्तिक । Note: Words ending in तद्धिताः affixes denoting a collection are used in the language in the neuter gender. Hence the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘हास्तिक’ declines like वन-शब्दः।

रागिणः mAp

Today we will look at the form रागिणः mAp from शिशुपालवधम् verse 10-91.

इति मदमदनाभ्यां रागिणः स्पष्टरागाननवरतरतश्रीसङ्गिनस्तानवेक्ष्य ।

Translation – Having thus seen those lovers whose passion was evident due to intoxication and lust and who were attached to the wealth in the form of ceaseless sexual pleasure, that night then waived her hand (in the form of the 13th lunar mansion named ‘Hasta’) and with the moon going down sought to retire with her face as if downcast with shame.
Note: ‘हस्त’ of course means ‘hand’ but it is also the name of the 13th lunar mansion. In the present verse ‘हस्त’ has been used in both meanings. The night is portrayed as a woman whose hand is the 13th lunar mansion and whose face is the moon. Just as a woman, on seeing lovers engaged in sexual pleasure would motion her hand (to cover her vision) and quickly turn away with her face down due to bashfulness, similarly the night, on seeing the impassioned lovers, motioned her hand (in the form of the 13th lunar mansion named ‘Hasta’) and sought to retire with her face (in the form of the moon) turned downward due to bashfulness. (Saying that the night sought to retire implies that the day was about to dawn.)

(1) रागिण्यश्च रागिणश्च – Passionate women and passionate men = रागिणः – Passionate persons.
As per the सूत्रम् 1-2-67 पुमान् स्त्रिया – Only the masculine form remains when used with the feminine form provided that the difference between the two forms is only due to gender.

Note: य: शिष्यते स लुप्यमानार्थाभिधायी – the one (‘रागिणः’) that remains also denotes the meaning of the one (‘रागिण्यः’) that gets elided.

Note: The अनुवृत्ति: of ‘तल्लक्षणश्चेदेव विशेषः’ comes down from the सूत्रम् 1-2-65 वृद्धो यूना तल्लक्षणश्चेदेव विशेषः in to this सूत्रम् 1-2-67.

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-बहुवचनम् ।

(2) रागिन् + शस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(3) रागिन् + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of शस् from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा ।

(4) रागिणस् । By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि – The letter ‘न्’ is replaced by ‘ण्’ when either ‘र्’ or ‘ष्’ precedes, even if intervened by a letter of the अट्-प्रत्याहार: or by a letter of the क-वर्ग: or प-वर्गः or the term ‘आङ्’ or ‘नुँम्’ (अनुस्वारः) either singly or in any combination.

(5) रागिणः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ – 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः

Questions:

1. From which सूत्रम् down to which सूत्रम् does the अधिकार: of ‘एकशेष:’ run in the अष्टाध्यायी?

2. The एकशेष-वृत्ति: is a अपवाद: for which समास:?

3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 1-2-67 पुमान् स्त्रिया (used in step 1) the काशिका says – तल्लक्षणश्चेदेव विशेष इत्येव – कुक्कुटश्च मयूरी च कुक्कुटमयूर्यौ। Please explain.

4. In which word(s) in verses 12-17 of Chapter 18 of the Geeta may the सूत्रम् 1-2-67 पुमान् स्त्रिया be applied?

5. Can you spot a द्वन्द्व: compound in the verses?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“When Śrī Rāma went to the forest all the (male and female) residents of Ayodhyā become dispirited.” Use the सूत्रम् 1-2-67 पुमान् स्त्रिया to derive the form for ‘(male and female) residents’ = निवासिनश्च निवासिन्यश्च। Use the verbal root √सद् (षद्ऌँ विशरणगत्यवसादनेषु १. ९९०) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘वि’ for ‘to be dispirited.’

Easy questions:

1. Can you spot the affix ‘शप्’ in the verses?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु been used in the commentary?

ऊरीकृत्य ind

Today we will look at the form ऊरीकृत्य ind from शिशुपालवधम् 2.30.

आत्मोदयः परज्यानिर्द्वयं नीतिरितीयती । तदूरीकृत्य कृतिभिर्वाचस्पत्यं प्रतायते ।। २-३० ।।

Translation – One’s success and the enemy’s failure – these two alone constitute political science. Having accepted this, eloquence is displayed by the wise.

(1) स्वीकृत्य = ऊरीकृत्य – having accepted

ऊरीकृत्य is derived from the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०) preceded by the term ‘ऊरी’। ‘ ऊरी’ gets the designation गति: here as per 1-4-61 ऊर्यादिच्विडाचश्च – The terms ‘ऊरी’ etc as well terms ending in the तद्धित: affix ‘च्विँ’ or ‘डाच्’ get the designation ‘गति’ provided they are used in conjunction with a verb.

Note: Besides accent considerations, the purpose of assigning the designation ‘गति’ is to facilitate compound formation prescribed by the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः which in turn allows for the substitution ‘ल्यप्‌’ (in place of ‘क्त्वा’) prescribed by the सूत्रम् 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ (in step 5.)

Note: Since the term ‘ऊरी’ has the designation ‘गति’ here it also gets the निपात-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-56 प्राग्रीश्वरान्निपाताः and hence the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-37 स्वरादिनिपातमव्ययम्।

(2) कृ + क्त्वा । By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले – The affix ‘क्त्वा’ is used following a verbal root which denotes a prior action relative to that of another verbal root, provided the agent of both the actions is the same. In the present example the later action (having the same agent – ‘wise’) is प्रतायते (‘is displayed.’)

(3) अलौकिक-विग्रह: –
ऊरी + कृ क्त्वा । By 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः – The indeclinable ‘कु’, terms having the designation ‘गति’ (ref. 1-4-60 गतिश्च etc) as well as the terms ‘प्र’ etc. (ref. 1-4-58 प्रादयः) invariably compound with a syntactically related term and the resulting compound gets the designation तत्पुरुष:।
Note: The अनुवृत्ति: of नित्यम् (invariably) comes down from the prior सूत्रम् 2-2-17 नित्यं क्रीडाजीविकयोः।

(4) By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ‘ऊरी’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 (which prescribes the compounding) the term कुगतिप्रादयः ends in the nominative case. Hence the term ‘ऊरी’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.

Note: ‘ऊरी + कृ क्त्वा’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

(5) ऊरी + कृ ल्यप् । By 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ – When the affix ‘क्त्वा’ occurs at the end of a compound, it is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ provided the prior member of the compound is a अव्‍ययम् other than ‘नञ्’ (ref. 2-2-6).
Note: As per 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ, the substitution ‘ल्यप्’ (in place of the affix ‘क्त्वा’) inherits the property of being a कित् (having the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) affix with the designation of कृत् (by 3-1-93) and आर्धधातुकम् (by 3-4-114.)

(6) ऊरी + कृ य । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

Note: 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying.

(7) ऊरी + कृ तुँक् य By 6-1-71 ह्रस्वस्य पिति कृति तुक् – When followed by a कृत् affix which is a पित् (has the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्), a short vowel takes the augment ‘तुँक्’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the augment ‘तुँक्’ joins after the short vowel ‘ऋ’।

(8) ऊरी + कृ त् य । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

= ऊरीकृत्य ।

‘ऊरीकृत्य’ gets the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः with the help of 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ। This allows 2-4-82 to apply below.

(9) ऊरीकृत्य + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(10) ऊरीकृत्य । By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः – The feminine affix आप् and सुँप् affixes that are prescribed after a अव्ययम् take the लुक् elision.

Questions:

1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 1-4-61 ऊर्यादिच्विडाचश्च (used in step 1) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – च्विडाचौ कृभ्वस्तियोगे विहितौ, तत्साहचर्यादूर्यादीनामपि तत्रैव गतिसंज्ञा। माधवादिग्रन्थे तु ‘आविःप्रादुःशब्दौ मुक्त्वा, अन्येषां करोतिनैव योगे गतिसंज्ञा’ इति स्थितम्। Please explain.

2. Can you spot two षष्ठी-तत्पुरुष: compounds in the verses?

3. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘नीति’ (seen in the form नीति: (प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) in the verses)?

4. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-2-6 नञ्‌ been used in the commentary?

5. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a fifth case affix in the form ब्राह्मणादित्वात् used in the commentary?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Having accepted Śrī Rāma’s sandals, Bharata returned to Ayodhyā.”

Easy questions:

1. In the fourth quarter of Chapter Six of the अष्टाध्यायी can you find the सूत्रम् which prescribes the substitution ‘आ’ in the form प्रतायते? (Hint: The अनुवृत्ति: of ‘आत्’ runs down from 6-4-41 विड्वनोरनुनासिकस्यात्‌ to 6-4-45 सनः क्तिचि लोपश्चास्यान्यतरस्याम्।) What is the alternate form for प्रतायते?

2. From which verbal root is the form विस्तार्यते (used in the commentary) derived?

त्रिसन्ध्यम् nAs

Today we will look at the form त्रिसन्ध्यम् nAs from शिशुपालवधम् verse 1-46.

स संचरिष्णुर्भुवनान्तरेषु यां यदृच्छयाशिश्रियदाश्रयः श्रियः । अकारि तस्यै मुकुटोपलस्खलत्करैस्त्रिसन्ध्यं त्रिदशैर्दिशे नमः ।। १-४६ ।।

Translation – Hiraṇyakaśipu, who was the seat of Goddess Śrī (Lakṣmī – prosperity), habitually roamed the other worlds and whichever direction he traveled to by his will – to that direction salutation was offered by all the gods, with their hands tottering on their crown-gems, at the three junctions of the day (dawn, noon and dusk) (46).

(1) तिसृणां सन्ध्यानां समाहारः = त्रिसन्ध्यम् – the three junctions of the day (dawn, noon and dusk).

अलौकिक-विग्रह: –
(2) त्रि आम् + सन्ध्या आम् । By 2-1-51 तद्धितार्थोत्तरपदसमाहारे च – In the following three situations a सुबन्तं (ending in a सुँप् affix) पदम् denoting either a direction of the compass or a numeral combines with another सुबन्तं (ending in a सुँप् affix) पदम् referring to the same item and the resulting compound is a तत्पुरुष: –
i) in the context where the sense of a तद्धित: affix is to be expressed
ii) when a उत्तरपदम् (a final member) of a compound follows
iii) when the compound denotes a समाहार: (aggregate.)

(3) As per 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् the term ‘त्रि आम्’ – which denotes a numeral – gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-1-51 (which prescribes the compounding) the term दिक्संख्ये (which comes as अनुवृत्ति: from the सूत्रम् 2-1-50 दिक्संख्ये संज्ञायाम्‌) ends in the nominative case. And hence the term ‘त्रि आम्’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.
Note: ‘त्रि आम् + सन्ध्या आम्’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

(4) त्रि + सन्ध्या । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: This compound is used in the neuter gender as per the सूत्रम् 2-4-17 स नपुंसकम्‌ – A द्विगुः/द्वन्द्व: compound which expresses a समाहार: (aggregation) is used (only) in the neuter gender.

See advanced question.

(5) त्रिसन्ध्य । By 1-2-47 ह्रस्वो नपुंसके प्रातिपदिकस्य – In the neuter gender, the ending vowel (if any) of a प्रातिपदिकम् is shortened.

This compound is used only in the singular as per the सूत्रम् 2-4-1 द्विगुरेकवचनम्‌ – A द्विगुः compound which expresses a समाहार: (aggregation) is used (only) in the singular.

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया।

(6) त्रिसन्ध्य + अम् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।

See question 1.

(7) त्रिसन्ध्य + अम् । By 7-1-24 अतोऽम् – The affixes ‘सुँ’ and ‘अम्’ that follow a neuter अङ्गम् ending in the short vowel ‘अ’ take ‘अम्’ as their replacement. Note: 7-1-24 is required here to prevent 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌ from applying.
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of the affix ‘अम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(8) त्रिसन्ध्यम् । By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a second case affix used in this form त्रिसन्ध्यम् in the verse?

2. Which कृत् affix is used to derive the form संचरिष्णुः (पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)?

3. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-3-16 नमःस्वस्तिस्वाहास्वधालंवषड्योगाच्च been used in the verse?

4. In the commentary can you spot a word in which the substitution ‘ल्यप्’ has been done (in place of the affix ‘क्त्वा’)?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“One who mutters the Gāyatrī at the three junctions of the day (dawn, noon and dusk) is freed from (by) all sins.” Use (a passive form of) the verbal root √मुच् (मुचॢँ मोक्षणे (मोचने) ६. १६६) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘प्र’ for ‘to be freed.’

Advanced question:

1. Under the सूत्रम् 2-4-17 स नपुंसकम्‌ (used in step 4) there is a वार्तिकम् – आबन्तो वा which states that – A द्विगुः compound which expresses a समाहार: (aggregation) and whose final member ends in the feminine affix ‘आप्’ is used in the feminine gender optionally.
This वार्तिकम् does apply in the present example since the final member ‘सन्ध्या’ of the द्विगुः compound ‘त्रिसन्ध्या’ ends in the feminine affix ‘आप्’। Derive the final (optional) feminine form of this compound. Hint: The तत्त्वबोधिनी comments on the derivation as follows – उपसर्जनह्रस्वत्वे सत्यदन्तत्वात् ‘द्विगो:’ इति स्त्रीत्वपक्षे ङीप्।

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-48 णिश्रिद्रुस्रुभ्यः कर्तरि चङ् been used in the verses?

2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the लुक् elision of the affix ‘त’ in the form अकारि?

क्षणलक्षितव्यवहिता fNs

Today we will look at the form क्षणलक्षितव्यवहिता fNs from शिशुपालवधम् verse 6-28.

द्रुतसमीरचलैः क्षणलक्षितव्यवहिता विटपैरिव मञ्जरी । नवतमालनिभस्य नभस्तरोरचिररोचिररोचत वारिदैः ।। ६-२८ ।।

Translation – Lightning (whose splendor is short-lived) which was (earlier) seen for a moment and then concealed by the clouds moving due to the swift wind shone as if it were a cluster of blossoms – of the tree in the form of the sky which appeared (dark) like a young Tamāla tree – which was (earlier) seen for a moment and then concealed by the branches moving due to the swift wind.

लौकिक-विग्रह: –
(1) पूर्वं क्षणलक्षिता पश्चाद्व्यवहिता = क्षणलक्षितव्यवहिता – (earlier) seen for a moment and then concealed.
Note: क्षणलक्षिता itself is a compound. It is a द्वितीया-तत्पुरुष: compound analyzed as क्षणं लक्षिता = क्षणलक्षिता। The derivation is similar to that of the compound मुहूर्तसेवा shown in the following post – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2015/01/29/

अलौकिक-विग्रह: –
(2) क्षणलक्षिता सुँ + व्यवहिता सुँ । By 2-1-49 पूर्वकालैकसर्वजरत्पुराणनवकेवलाः समानाधिकरणेन – A सुबन्तं (ending in a सुँप् affix) पदम् which either i) denotes an action which naturally precedes in time or ii) is (composed by adding a सुँप् affix to) ‘एक’/’सर्व’/’जरत्’/’पुराण’/’नव’/’केवल’ optionally compounds with another सुबन्तं (ending in a सुँप् affix) पदम् – provided both the सुबन्त-पदे refer to the same item – and the resulting compound is a तत्पुरुष:।

(3) By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ‘क्षणलक्षिता सुँ’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-1-49 (which prescribes the compounding) the term पूर्वकालैकसर्वजरत्पुराणनवकेवलाः ends in the nominative case. Hence ‘क्षणलक्षिता सुँ’ – which denotes the action occurring earlier in time – is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.

Note: ‘क्षणलक्षिता सुँ + व्यवहिता सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

(4) क्षणलक्षिता + व्यवहिता । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

(5) क्षणलक्षितव्यवहिता । By 6-3-42 पुंवत्‌ कर्मधारयजातीयदेशीयेषु – A feminine adjective which does not end in the feminine affix ‘ऊङ्’ (ref. 4-1-66 ऊङुतः etc) and is formed from a masculine base denoting the same meaning becomes masculine-like when it is either the prior member of a कर्मधारय: compound or is followed by the affix ‘जातीय’ (ref. 5-3-69 प्रकारवचने जातीयर्) or ‘देशीय’ (ref. 5-3-67 ईषदसमाप्तौ कल्पब्देश्यदेशीयरः)।

As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्षणलक्षितव्यवहिता’ is feminine since the latter member ‘व्यवहिता’ of the compound is feminine. The compound declines like रमा-शब्द:।

The विवक्षा is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।

(6) क्षणलक्षितव्यवहिता + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(7) क्षणलक्षितव्यवहिता + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(8) क्षणलक्षितव्यवहिता । By 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात्‌ सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल् – A single letter affix ‘सुँ’, ‘ति’ or ‘सि’ is dropped following a base ending in a consonant or in the long feminine affix ‘ङी’ or ‘आप्’।

Questions:

1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-1-49 पूर्वकालैकसर्वजरत्पुराणनवकेवलाः समानाधिकरणेन (used in step 2) the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – ‘2-1-57 विशेषणं विशेष्येण बहुलम्‌’ इति सिद्धे पूर्वनिपातनियमार्थं सूत्रम्‌। एकशब्दस्य ‘2-1-50 दिक्संख्ये संज्ञायाम्‌’ इति नियमबाधनार्थं च। Please explain.

2. Commenting on the same सूत्रम् the काशिका says – पूर्वकाल इत्यर्थनिर्देशः, परिशिष्टानां स्वरूपग्रहणम्। Please explain.

3. The अनुवृत्ति: of ‘समानाधिकरणेन’ runs from the सूत्रम् 2-1-49 पूर्वकालैकसर्वजरत्पुराणनवकेवलाः समानाधिकरणेन down to which सूत्रम्?

4. Derive the compound ‘द्रुतसमीरचल’ (used in the form द्रुतसमीरचलैः (पुंलिङ्गे तृतीया-बहुवचनम्) in the verse.) Hint: First form the कर्मधारय: compound ‘द्रुतसमीर’ and use that to form the तृतीया-तत्पुरुष: compound ‘द्रुतसमीरचल’।

5. Can you spot the कृत् affix ‘क’ in the verse?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Look at the beautiful idol which has been (earlier) cleaned and then decorated.” Use the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मूर्ति’ for ‘idol.’ Form a compound for ‘(earlier) cleaned and then decorated’ = पूर्वं मार्जिता पश्चाद्‍भूषिता।

Easy questions:

1. Can you spot the augment अट् in the verse?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-17 जसः शी been used in the commentary?

अध्वरधुराम् fAs

Today we will look at the form अध्वरधुराम् fAs from शिशुपालवधम् verse 2-103.

संभाव्य त्वामतिभरक्षमस्कन्धं स बान्धवः । सहायमध्वरधुरां धर्मराजो विवक्षते ।। २-१०३ ।।
महात्मानोऽनुगृह्णन्ति भजमानान् रिपूनपि । सपत्नीः प्रापयन्त्यब्धिं सिन्धवो नगनिम्नगाः ।। २-१०४ ।।

Translation – That kinsman Yudhiṣṭhira (the king of dharma) desires to bear the responsibility of (conducting) the sacrificial ceremony counting on you – whose shoulders are capable of (carrying) a heavy burden – as an ally. Great souls shower their grace on even enemies who are seeking their refuge even as the great rivers help the mountain-torrents – which are (like) their (competing) co-wives – to reach the ocean (which is their common master/husband.)

लौकिक-विग्रह: –
(1) अध्वरस्य धूः = अध्वरधुरा – burden/responsibility of (conducting) the sacrificial ceremony.
Note: The sixth case affix in अध्वरस्य is as per the सूत्रम् 2-3-50 षष्ठी शेषे।

अलौकिक-विग्रह: –
(2) अध्वर ङस् + धुर् सुँ । By 2-2-8 षष्ठी – A पदम् ending in a sixth case affix optionally compounds with a (syntactically related) पदम् ending in a सुँप् affix and the resulting compound gets the designation तत्पुरुष:।

(3) By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ‘अध्वर ङस्’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-8 (which prescribes the compounding) the term षष्ठी ends in the nominative case. Hence ‘अध्वर ङस्’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.

Note: ‘अध्वर ङस् + धुर् सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

(4) अध्वर + धुर् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

(5) अध्वरधुर् + अ । By 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे – Following a compound ending in either ‘ऋच्’ or ‘पुर्’ or ‘अप्’ or ‘धुर्’ (when it is not related to अक्ष: ‘axle’) or ‘पथिन्’ the तद्धित: affix ‘अ’ is prescribed and this affix becomes the ending member of the compound.
Note: ‘अ अनक्षे’ इतिच्‍छेदः – The term आनक्षे contained in the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे should be split as अ + अनक्षे। The first case affix at the end of ‘अ’ has been irregularly elided.

= अध्वरधुर ।

Note: Since ‘धुर्’ is feminine in gender, as per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the तत्पुरुषः compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अध्वरधुर’ is also feminine in gender and hence we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:) ‘टाप्’।
Note: The addition of a समासान्त-प्रत्यय: (an affix at the end of a compound) does not affect the gender of the compound. Hence in the present example, the addition of the affix ‘अ’ at the end of the compound does not block the application of 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः। This is what is explained in the commentary as – समासान्तानां प्रकृतिलिङ्गत्वात्तत्पुरुषे परवल्लिङ्गत्वे टाप्।

(6) अध्वरधुर + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌ – The प्रातिपदिकानि ‘अज’ etc. and प्रातिपदिकानि ending in the letter ‘अ’ get the टाप् affix in the feminine gender.

(7) अध्वरधुर + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(8) अध्वरधुरा । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्।

(9) अध्वरधुरा + अम् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।

(10) अध्वरधुराम् । By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 ऋक्पूरब्धू:पथामानक्षे (used in step 5) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – ‘अनक्षे’ इत्येतत्सामान्यतः श्रुतमपि धुरैव संबध्यते सामर्थ्यात्, नान्यै:। Please explain.

2. Commenting on the same सूत्रम् the काशिका says – अनक्ष इति किम्? अक्षस्य धूः = अक्षधूः। Please explain.

3. Under the सूत्रम् 5-4-74 the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी gives the example विष्णो: पू: = विष्णुपुरम्। Commenting on this example the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – यद्यपि पुरशब्देन समासेऽप्येतत्सिध्यति, तथापि ‘विष्णुपू:’ इत्यनिष्टवारणाय सूत्रे पूर्ग्रहणम्। Please explain.

4. Can you spot the affix ‘टच्’ in the verses?

5. From which verbal root is the form वोढुम् (used in the commentary) derived?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“King Daśaratha wanted to entrust the responsibility of (governing) the kingdom of Ayodhyā on Śrī Rāma’s shoulder.” Use the verbal root √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४. १०६) preceded by the उपसर्ग: ‘नि’ for ‘to entrust.’ Form a षष्ठी-तत्पुरुष: compound for ‘the kingdom of Ayodhyā’ and use this compound to form the larger षष्ठी-तत्पुरुष: compound ‘the responsibility of the kingdom of Ayodhyā.’

Easy questions:

1. Can you spot the affix ‘सन्’ in the verses?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-1-16 ग्रहिज्यावयिव्यधिवष्टिविचतिवृश्चतिपृच्छतिभृज्जतीनां ङिति च been used in the verses?

प्रत्यन्यदन्ति nNs

Today we will look at the form प्रत्यन्यदन्ति nNs from शिशुपालवधम् 5.41.

Translation – A Mahout was unable to subdue a mighty elephant who was oozing blood from an eye’s outer corner which was deeply pierced by a sharp goad and who was running facing towards (in the direction of) another elephant. (Indeed) one who is mighty does not come under another’s control by force.

लौकिक-विग्रह: –
(1) अन्यदन्तिनं प्रति = प्रत्यन्यदन्ति = facing towards (in the direction of) another elephant.

अलौकिक-विग्रह: –
(2) अन्यदन्तिन् अम् + प्रति । By 2-1-14 लक्षणेनाभिप्रती आभिमुख्ये – The indeclinable ‘अभि’ or ‘प्रति’ – when used in the meaning of आभिमुख्यम् ‘facing towards’/’in the direction of’ – optionally compounds with a सुबन्तं पदम् (a पदम् ending in a सुँप् affix) which denotes the mark/target and the resulting compound is a अव्ययीभावः।
Note: As per 1-4-90 लक्षणेत्थम्भूताख्यानभागवीप्सासु प्रतिपर्यनवः, ‘प्रति’ has the designation कर्मप्रवचनीय: here. Hence as per 2-3-8 कर्मप्रवचनीययुक्ते द्वितीया, a second case affix (अम्) is used following the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अन्यदन्तिन्’ co-occurring with the कर्मप्रवचनीय: ‘प्रति’।

(3) प्रति + अन्यदन्तिन् अम् । By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – A term denoted by a word ending in a nominative case in a सूत्रम् which prescribes a compound gets the designation ‘उपसर्जन’। Here the term ‘अभिप्रती’ in the सूत्रम् 2-1-14 ends in the nominative case. Therefore ‘प्रति’ gets the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ by 1-2-43. Hence ‘प्रति’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.
Note: ‘प्रति + अन्यदन्तिन् अम्’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

(4) प्रति + अन्यदन्तिन् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

(5) प्रत्यन्यदन्तिन् । By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

(6) प्रत्यन्यदन्तिन् + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। Note: By 1-1-41 अव्ययीभावश्च – The compounds that are अव्ययीभाव-समासाः are also designated as indeclinables. This allows 2-4-82 to apply in the following step.

(7) प्रत्यन्यदन्तिन् । By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः – The feminine affix आप् and सुँप् affixes that are prescribed after an अव्ययम् take the लुक् elision. Now ‘प्रत्यन्यदन्तिन्’ gets the designation पदम् by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्। This allows 8-2-7 to apply in the next step.

(8) प्रत्यन्यदन्ति । By 8-2-7 नलोप: प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य – The ending letter ‘न्’ of a पदम् is dropped when the पदम् also has the designation प्रातिपदिकम्।

Translation – Here (on Mt. Raivataka) in each direction a melodious yet frightening roar is repeatedly made by the joyous young elephants. And in each forest glitters the cluster of female yaks as well as the rays of the gold and gem (strewn) grounds.

लौकिक-विग्रह: –
(1) दिशि दिशि = प्रतिदिशम् = in each direction.

अलौकिक-विग्रह: –
(2) दिश् ङि + प्रति । By 2-1-6 अव्ययं विभक्तिसमीपसमृद्धिव्यृद्ध्यर्थाभावात्ययासम्प्रतिशब्दप्रादुर्भावपश्चाद्यथानुपूर्व्ययौगपद्यसादृश्यसम्पत्तिसाकल्यान्तवचनेषु – A अव्ययम्‌ (indeclinable) used in any one of the following meanings invariably compounds with a (syntactically related) term ending in a सुँप् affix to yield a अव्ययीभाव: compound –
(i) विभक्ति: – a case affix
(ii) समीपम्‌ – close by
(iii) समृद्धि: (ऋद्धेराधिक्यम्‌) – prosperity
(iv) व्यृद्धि: (विगता ऋद्धि:) – adversity
(v) अर्थाभाव: – absence of something
(vi) अत्यय: (ध्वंस:) – disappearance (passing away)
(vii) असम्प्रति – presently inappropriate
(viii) शब्दप्रादुर्भाव: – manifestation of a sound
(ix) पश्चाद् – following
(x) यथा (योग्यतावीप्सापदार्थानतिवृत्तिसादृश्यानि यथार्था:) – appropriateness, repetition, non-transgression of something, similarity
(xi) आनुपूर्व्यम्‌ – in orderly succession
(xii) यौगपद्यम्‌ – simultaneity
(xiii) सादृश्यम्‌ – similarity/resemblance. Note: यथार्थत्वेनैव सिद्धे पुन: सादृश्यग्रहणं गुणभूतेऽपि सादृश्ये यथा स्यादित्येवमर्थम्‌ – सादृश्यम्‌ is mentioned here again (even though it is already given as one of the meanings of यथा in (x) above) in order to allow compounding even when सादृश्यम्‌ is used in a secondary (adjectival) sense
(xiv) सम्पत्ति: (अनुरूप आत्मभाव:) – befitting state
(xv) साकल्यम्‌ – totality/completeness
(xvi) अन्त: – termination/end
Note: The term ‘वचन’ used at the end of the compound विभक्ति……वचनेषु connects with each one of the prior terms ‘विभक्ति’ etc in the compound.

(3) प्रति + दिश् ङि । By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – A term denoted by a word ending in a nominative case in a सूत्रम् which prescribes a compound gets the designation ‘उपसर्जन’। Here the term ‘अव्ययम्’ in the सूत्रम् 2-1-6 ends in the nominative case. Therefore the अव्ययम् ‘प्रति’ gets the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ by 1-2-43. Hence ‘प्रति’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.
Note: ‘प्रति + दिश् ङि’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

(4) प्रति + दिश् । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

(5) प्रतिदिश् + टच् । By 5-4-107 अव्ययीभावे शरत्प्रभृतिभ्यः – In a अव्ययीभाव: compound the तद्धित: affix टच् is prescribed following the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शरद्’ etc and this affix becomes the ending member of the compound.
Note: The class of प्रातिपदिकानि ‘शरद्’ etc is listed as follows – शरद् । विपाश्‌ । अनस्‌ । मनस्‌ । उपानह्‌ । दिव्‌ । हिमवत्‌ । अनडुह्‌ । दिश्‌ । दृश्‌ । विश्‌ । चेतस्‌ । चतुर्‌ । त्यद् । तद् । यद् । कियत्‌ ।

See questions 1, 2 and 3.

(6) प्रतिदिश् + अ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

= प्रतिदिश ।

(7) प्रतिदिश + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।

(8) प्रतिदिश + अम् । By 2-4-83 नाव्ययीभावादतोऽम्त्वपञ्चम्याः – This सूत्रम् has two parts – (a) नाव्ययीभावादत: – following a अव्ययीभावः compound ending (ref. 1-1-72) in the letter ‘अ’ a सुँप् affix does not take the लुक् elision (which would have been done by 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः) and (b) अम्त्वपञ्चम्याः – following a अव्ययीभावः compound ending (ref. 1-1-72) in the letter ‘अ’ a सुँप् affix – other than a fifth case affix – is substituted by अम्।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of the affix ‘अम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(9) प्रतिदिशम् । By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.
