कदन्नम् nAs

Today we will look at the form कदन्नम्  nAs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 5.9.9.

Gita Press translation – As for Bharata, when he was addressed as a lunatic, a dullard or a deaf fellow by the common people, the two-footed brutes, he spoke words befitting such a description and would do work as desired by others when compelled to do so. (Nay,) he would eat any food got through forced labor or by way of remuneration (for services done by him), by begging or without asking, no matter whether it was scanty or plentiful, tasteful or bad, but never for the gratification of his senses. For, having realized his oneness with the all-blissful Self – that is of the nature of absolute Consciousness, ever without cause and shining by itself – he never identified himself with the body in joy or sorrow occasioned by pairs of opposites (such as honor or ignominy) (9).

(1) कुत्सितमन्नम् = कदन्नम्‌ – bad food

(2) अलौकिक-विग्रह: –
कु + अन्न सुँ । By 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः – The indeclinable ‘कु’, terms having the designation ‘गति’ (ref. 1-4-60 गतिश्च etc) as well as the terms ‘प्र’ etc. (ref. 1-4-58 प्रादयः) invariably compound with a syntactically related term and the resulting compound gets the designation तत्पुरुष:।
Note: The अनुवृत्ति: of नित्यम् (invariably) comes down from the prior सूत्रम् 2-2-17 नित्यं क्रीडाजीविकयोः।

(3) By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term ‘कु’ gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 (which prescribes the compounding) the term कुगतिप्रादयः ends in the nominative case. Hence the term ‘कु’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.

Note: ‘कु + अन्न सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

(4) कु + अन्न । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

(5) कत् + अन्न । By 6-3-101 कोः कत्‌ तत्पुरुषेऽचि – In a तत्पुरुष: compound, the indeclinable ‘कु’ takes the substitution ‘कत्‌’ when it is followed by a vowel-beginning final member. Note: As per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य the entire term ‘कु’ is replaced by ‘कत्’।

(6) कदन्न । By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते – When a झल् letter occurs at the end of a पदम् it is replaced by a जश् letter.

As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कदन्न’ is neuter since the latter member ‘अन्न’ of the compound is neuter. The compound declines like वन-शब्द:।

The विवक्षा is द्वितीया-एकवचनम्।

(7) कदन्न + अम् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।

(8) कदन्न + अम् । By 7-1-24 अतोऽम् – The affixes ‘सुँ’ and ‘अम्’ that follow a neuter अङ्गम् ending in the short vowel ‘अ’ take ‘अम्’ as their replacement. 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of the affix ‘अम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
Note: 7-1-24 is required here to prevent 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌ from applying.

(9) कदन्नम् । By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 6-3-101 कोः कत्‌ तत्पुरुषेऽचि (used in step 5) the काशिका says – अचीति किम्? कुब्राह्मणः। कुपुरुषः। Please explain.

2. Which कृत् affix is used to form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘याच्ञा’ (occurring in the form याच्ञया (तृतीया-एकवचनम्) in the verses)?

3. In which word(s) in the verses has the augment मुँक् been used?

4. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a second case affix in the form मूल्यम् used in the commentary?

5. Where has the वार्तिकम् (under 2-3-13 चतुर्थी सम्प्रदाने in the महाभाष्यम्) तादर्थ्ये चतुर्थी वाच्या been used in the commentary?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Bad food pollutes not only the body but also the mind.” Use the verbal root √दुष् (दुषँ वैकृत्ये ४. ८२) in the causative for ‘to pollute.’

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे been used in the verses?

2. Can you spot the affix श्नम् in the commentary?

  1. 1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 6-3-101 कोः कत्‌ तत्पुरुषेऽचि (used in step 5) the काशिका says – अचीति किम्? कुब्राह्मणः। कुपुरुषः। Please explain.
Answer: Why does the सूत्रम् 6-3-101 कोः कत्‌ तत्पुरुषेऽचि specify the condition अचि (when followed by a vowel-beginning final member)? Consider the examples – (कुत्सितो ब्राह्मणः =) कुब्राह्मणः and (कुत्सितः पुरुषः =) कुपुरुषः। In these examples the compounds’ final member (‘ब्राह्मण’/’पुरुष’) does not begin with a vowel and hence ‘कु’ does not take the substitution ‘कत्’। If the condition अचि were not to be specified in the सूत्रम् 6-3-101 then ‘कु’ would have taken the substitution ‘कत्’ here also which would have been undesirable.

    2. Which कृत् affix is used to form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘याच्ञा’ (occurring in the form याच्ञया (तृतीया-एकवचनम्) in the verses)?
    Answer: The कृत् affix ‘नङ्’ is used to form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘याच्ञा’ – derived from the verbal root √याच् (टुयाचृँ याच्ञायाम् १. १००१).

    याच् + नङ् । By 3-3-90 यजयाचयतविच्छप्रच्छरक्षो नङ् – Following the verbal root √यज् (यजँ देवपूजासङ्गतिकरणदानेषु १. ११५७) or √याच् (टुयाचृँ याच्ञायाम् १. १००१) or √यत् (यतीँ प्रयत्ने १. ३०) or √विच्छ् (विच्छँ गतौ ६. १५९) or √प्रच्छ् (प्रच्छँ ज्ञीप्सायाम् ६.१४९) or √रक्ष् (रक्षँ पालने १. ७४६) the affix ‘नङ्’ may be used to denote either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.
Note: Words (except याच्ञा which is used in the feminine) derived by using this सूत्रम् are used in the masculine gender in the language.
    = याच् + न । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: The सूत्रम् 7-2-8 नेड् वशि कृति prevents the affix नङ् from taking the augment इट्।
    = याच् + ञ । By 8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चुः।
    ‘याच्ञ’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

Note: This प्रातिपदिकम् is used in the feminine gender, therefore we have to add the appropriate feminine affix (स्त्रीप्रत्यय:)।
    याच्ञ + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।
    = याच्ञ + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = याच्ञा । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।
    ‘याच्ञा’ declines like सीता-शब्दः। तृतीया-एकवचनम् is याच्ञया।

    3. In which word(s) in the verses has the augment मुँक् been used?
    Answer: The augment मुँक् has been used in the words अभिभाष्यमाणः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अभिभाष्यमाण’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) and कार्यमाणः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कार्यमाण’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अभिभाष्यमाण’ is derived from the verbal root √भाष् (भाषँ व्यक्तायां वाचि १. ६९६) as follows –
    भाष् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = भाष् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
= भाष् + शानच् । By 3-2-126 लक्षणहेत्वोः क्रियायाः – ‘शतृँ’/’शानच्’ replaces ‘लँट्’ when it follows a verbal root which denotes an action which constitutes a characteristic (लक्षणम्) or result/cause (हेतु: = फलम्/कारणम्) of another action. Note: In the present example the action अभिभाष्यमाणः (addressed) is the cause (हेतुः) of another action प्रभाषते (spoke.) Note: As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा, while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। Since अभिभाष्यमाणः is a passive construct, as per 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः, the verbal root √भाष् takes a आत्मनेपदम् affix here. Hence the affix ‘शानच्’ is chosen (and not the affix ‘शतृँ’)।
    = भाष् + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = भाष् + यक् + आन । By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
    = भाष् + य + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
Note: The affix ‘यक्’ has the designation आर्धधातुकम् (by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः) but it does not begin with a वल् letter and hence it cannot take the augment ‘इट्’ (by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।)
    = भाष्य मुँक् + आन । By 7-2-82 आने मुक् – The letter ‘अ’ belonging to a अङ्गम् takes the augment मुँक् when followed by ‘आन’।
    = भाष्य म् + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = भाष्यमाण । By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि।

    अभि + भाष्यमाण । ‘भाष्यमाण’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘अभि’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
    = अभिभाष्यमाण । ‘अभिभाष्यमाण’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

In the masculine gender the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अभिभाष्यमाण’ declines like राम-शब्द:। प्रथमा-एकवचनम् is अभिभाष्यमाण:।

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कार्यमाण’ is derived from the causative form of the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०) as follows –
    कृ + णिच् । By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।
    = कृ + इ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कर् + इ । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः।
    = कारि । By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः। ‘कारि’ gets धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

    कारि + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = कारि + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
= कारि + शानच् । By 3-2-126 लक्षणहेत्वोः क्रियायाः – ‘शतृँ’/’शानच्’ replaces ‘लँट्’ when it follows a verbal root which denotes an action which constitutes a characteristic (लक्षणम्) or result/cause (हेतु: = फलम्/कारणम्) of another action. Note: In the present example the action कार्यमाणः (compelled to do) is the cause (हेतुः) of another action करोति (does work.) Note: As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा, while as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। Since कार्यमाणः is a passive construct, as per 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः, ‘कारि’ takes a आत्मनेपदम् affix here. Hence the affix ‘शानच्’ is chosen (and not the affix ‘शतृँ’)।
    = कारि + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कारि + यक् + आन । By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
    = कारि + य + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
Note: The affix ‘यक्’ has the designation आर्धधातुकम् (by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः) but it does not begin with a वल् letter and hence it cannot take the augment ‘इट्’ (by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।)
    = कार् + य + आन । By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि।
    = कार्य मुँक् + आन । By 7-2-82 आने मुक् – The letter ‘अ’ belonging to a अङ्गम् takes the augment मुँक् when followed by ‘आन’।
    = कार्य म् + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = कार्यमाण । By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि।

In the masculine gender the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कार्यमाण’ declines like राम-शब्द:। प्रथमा-एकवचनम् is कार्यमाण:।

    4. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of a second case affix in the form मूल्यम् used in the commentary?
Answer: The second case affix in the form मूल्यम् (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मूल्य’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्), which is co-occurring with ‘अन्तरेण’, is justified by the सूत्रम् 2-3-4 अन्तरान्तरेण युक्ते – A second case affix (‘अम्’, ‘औट्’, ‘शस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) co-occurring with ‘अन्तरा’ or ‘अन्तरेण’। Note: As per the महाभाष्यम्, the terms ‘अन्तरा’ and ‘अन्तरेण’ used in the सूत्रम् 2-3-4 have the निपात-सञ्ज्ञा। They also have the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-37 स्वरादिनिपातमव्ययम्। (Here अन्तरेण is not the instrumental singular of ‘अन्तर’)।

    5. Where has the वार्तिकम् (under 2-3-13 चतुर्थी सम्प्रदाने in the महाभाष्यम्) तादर्थ्ये चतुर्थी वाच्या been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The वार्तिकम् (under 2-3-13 चतुर्थी सम्प्रदाने in the महाभाष्यम्) तादर्थ्ये चतुर्थी वाच्या has been used in the form इन्द्रियप्रीतये (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इन्द्रियप्रीति’, चतुर्थी-एकवचनम्)।

As per the वार्तिकम् (under 2-3-13 चतुर्थी सम्प्रदाने in the महाभाष्यम्) तादर्थ्ये चतुर्थी वाच्या – A fourth case affix (‘ङे’, ‘भ्याम्’, ‘भ्यस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) which denotes the purpose (‘for the sake of that’).

Note: The existence of this वार्तिकम् is inferred from the सूत्रम् 2-1-36 चतुर्थी तदर्थार्थबलिहितसुखरक्षितैः which allows compounding between a पदम् which ends in a fourth case affix and another पदम् which ends in a सुँप् affix and denotes a thing whose purpose is denoted by the पदम् ending in the fourth case affix.

In the present example, अन्नोपभोजनम् (eating food) is for the purpose of ‘gratification of the senses’ (denoted by the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इन्द्रियप्रीति’)। Hence as per the above वार्तिकम् the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘इन्द्रियप्रीति’ takes a fourth case affix to give the form इन्द्रियप्रीतये।
Note: Under this वार्तिकम् – तादर्थ्ये चतुर्थी वाच्या, the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी gives the example ‘मुक्तये हरिं भजति‘ (someone worships Lord Viṣṇu for the purpose of liberation) which is similar to the present example ‘इन्द्रियप्रीतयेऽन्नमुपभुङ्क्ते‘ (someone eats food for the purpose of sense-gratification).

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Bad food pollutes not only the body but also the mind.” Use the verbal root √दुष् (दुषँ वैकृत्ये ४. ८२) in the causative for ‘to pollute.’
    Answer: कदन्नम् न केवलम् देहम् दूषयति परन्तु मनः च अपि (दूषयति) = कदन्नं न केवलं देहं दूषयति परन्तु मनश्चापि ।
    Note: The derivation of the form दूषयति (लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोगः (हेतुमति), प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्) is similar to the derivation of the form दूषयसि (लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोगः (हेतुमति), मध्यम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्) as shown in the following post – https://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/04/03/विदूषयसि-2as-लँट्

    Easy questions:
    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे has been used in the form प्रभाषते – derived from the verbal root √भाष् (भाषँ व्यक्तायां वाचि १. ६९६).
    As per the सूत्रम् 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे – The टि-भागः (ref: 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि) of a आत्मनेपदम् affix which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has the letter ‘ट्’ as a इत्), gets the letter ‘ए’ as the replacement.

Please see answer to easy question 1 in the following comment for derivation of the form प्रभाषते – https://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/07/04/लिप्सवः-mnp/#comment-3963

    2. Can you spot the affix श्नम् in the commentary?
Answer: The affix श्नम् occurs in the form उपभुङ्क्ते – derived from the verbal root √भुज् (भुजँ पालनाभ्यवहारयोः ७. १७).
Please see answer to question 1 in the following comment for derivation of the form भुङ्क्ते –
    https://avg-sanskrit.org/2011/10/27/पिनष्टि-3as-लँट्/#comment-1479
    ‘उप’ is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    उप + भुङ्क्ते = उपभुङ्क्ते ।
