अब्राह्मणः mNs

Today we will look at the form अब्राह्मणः mNs from महाभारतम् 1.92.13.

Translation – Yayāti said: O best of kings! A Brāhmaṇa, and that too only one who knows the Veda, accepts gifts; not men (Kṣatriyas) like us. O king! Previously I myself have always engaged in charity towards Brāhmaṇas, as it should be done (12). One who is not a Brāhmaṇa should never live a wretched life (accepting charity.) And solicitation is (like) the wife of a Brāhmaṇa who has conquered the world by (his) knowledge. (Meaning that – only such a Brāhmaṇa should engage in accepting charity.) I should never perform an action which has not been done before. Why indeed, desirous as I am of doing virtuous deeds there (in the land of karma)? (Meaning that – I should not perform such an action.) (13)

(1) न ब्राह्मण: = अब्राह्मण: – Not a Brāhmaṇa.

अलौकिक-विग्रह: –
(2) नञ्‌ + ब्राह्मण सुँ । By 2-2-6 नञ्‌ – The negation particle नञ्‌ (meaning ‘not’) optionally compounds with a सुबन्तं (ending in a सुँप् affix) पदम् and the resulting compound is a तत्पुरुष:।
Note: The negation particle नञ्‌ belongs to the चादि-गणः (referenced in 1-4-57 चादयोऽसत्त्वे)। Hence it gets the designation निपात: by 1-4-56 प्राग्रीश्वरान्निपाताः and the designation अव्ययम् by 1-1-37 स्वरादिनिपातमव्ययम्।
Note: तत्सादृश्यमभावश्च तदन्यत्वं तदल्पता । अप्राशस्त्यं विरोधश्च नञर्था: षट् प्रकीर्तिता: ॥ The negation particle नञ्‌ may convey any of the following senses –
i) तत्सादृश्यम् – similarity to that which is being negated.
ii) अभाव: – absence of that which is being negated.
iii) तदन्यत्वम् – different from that which is being negated.
iv) तदल्पता – smallness of that which is being negated.
v) अप्राशस्त्यम् – non-praiseworthiness.
vi) विरोध: – opposite of that which is being negated.
In the present example the negation particle नञ्‌ conveys the sense of तत्सादृश्यम् – similarity to that which is being negated. अब्राह्मण: refers to one who is different from yet similar to a Brāhmaṇa. Hence the compound refers to a man and not an animal or an inanimate object.

(3) By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term नञ् gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-6 (which prescribes the compounding) the term नञ् ends in the nominative case. Hence the term नञ् is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.

(4) न + ब्राह्मण सुँ । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः
Note: ‘न + ब्राह्मण सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

(5) न + ब्राह्मण । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

(6) अब्राह्मण । By 6-3-73 नलोपो नञः – The letter ‘न्’ of the negation particle नञ्‌ is elided when followed by a final member of a compound.

As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अब्राह्मण’ is masculine since the latter member ‘ब्राह्मण’ of the compound is masculine. The compound declines like राम-शब्द:।

The विवक्षा is प्रथमा-एकवचनम् ।

(7) अब्राह्मण + सुँ । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

(8) अब्राह्मण + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

(9) अब्राह्मण: । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः

Questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-2-6 नञ्‌ (used in step 2) been used for the first time in the गीता?

2. Where else (besides in अब्राह्मण:) has नञ्‌ been used in the verses?

3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-2-6 नञ्‌ the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – इह ‘नलोपो नञः’ इत्यत्र विशेषणार्थो ञकारः। तत्फलं च नैकधेत्यत्रालोपः। Please explain.

4. The वृत्ति: of the सूत्रम् 6-3-73 नलोपो नञः (used in step 6) in the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – नञो नस्‍य लोप: स्यादुत्तरपदे। Commenting on this the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – ‘अलुगुत्तरपदे’ इत्यधिकारादिति भावः। Please explain.

5. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-4-54 सनि मीमाघुरभलभशकपतपदामच इस् been used in the verses?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“One who is not Rudra should not drink poison.” Construct a तत्पुरुष: compound for ‘one who is not Rudra’ = न रुद्र:।

Easy questions:

1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘ए’ in the form वर्तते?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-80 अतो येयः been used in the verses?

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-2-6 नञ्‌ (used in step 2) been used for the first time in the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-2-6 नञ्‌ has been used for the first time in the गीता in the form अपर्याप्तम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अपर्याप्त’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्)।
    अपर्याप्तं तदस्माकं बलं भीष्माभिरक्षितम्‌ |
    पर्याप्तं त्विदमेतेषां बलं भीमाभिरक्षितम्‌ || 1-10||

    न पर्याप्तम् = अपर्याप्तम् – Not limited (in number.)

    अलौकिक-विग्रह: –
    नञ्‌ + पर्याप्त सुँ । By 2-2-6 नञ्‌ – The negation particle नञ्‌ (meaning ‘not’) optionally compounds with a सुबन्तं (ending in a सुँप् affix) पदम् and the resulting compound is a तत्पुरुष:।
In the present example the negation particle नञ्‌ conveys the sense of विरोध: – opposite of that which is being negated.
By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – the term नञ् gets the designation उपसर्जनम् because in the सूत्रम् 2-2-6 (which prescribes the compounding) the term नञ् ends in the nominative case. Hence the term नञ् is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।
    = न + पर्याप्त सुँ । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
Note: ‘न + पर्याप्त सुँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.
    = न + पर्याप्त । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।
    = अपर्याप्त । By 6-3-73 नलोपो नञः।
As per the सूत्रम् 2-4-26 परवल्लिङ्गं द्वन्द्वतत्पुरुषयोः, the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अपर्याप्त’ is an adjective since the latter member ‘पर्याप्त’ of the compound is an adjective. Since the compound is qualifying the neuter noun बलम्, it is used in the neuter here. The compound declines like वन-शब्द:। प्रथमा-एकवचनम् is अपर्याप्तम्।

    2. Where else (besides in अब्राह्मण:) has नञ्‌ been used in the verses?
    Answer: नञ्‌ has also been used in the form अकृतपूर्वम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अकृतपूर्व’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।
    न कृतपूर्वम् = अकृतपूर्वम् – Not done before.
The derivation of the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अकृतपूर्व’ is similar to the derivation of the compound प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अपर्याप्त’ as shown in answer to question 1 above.

Note: कृतपूर्वम् itself is a compound derived as पूर्वम् कृतम् = कृतपूर्वम्। Please see the following post for derivation – https://avg-sanskrit.org/2014/12/01/कृतपूर्वम्-nns

    3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-2-6 नञ्‌ the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – इह ‘नलोपो नञः’ इत्यत्र विशेषणार्थो ञकारः। तत्फलं च नैकधेत्यत्रालोपः। Please explain.
Answer: The purpose of the इत् letter ‘ञ्‌’ (in the particle नञ्‌) is to distinguish नञ्‌ from न। Hence the elision (prescribed by 6-3-73 नलोपो नञः) of the letter ‘न्’ applies only to नञ्‌ and not to न। As a result, there is no elision of the letter ‘न्’ in forms such as नैकधा etc., because these are constructed using the particle न (and not नञ्‌) and hence the सूत्रम् 6-3-73 does not apply.

    4. The वृत्ति: of the सूत्रम् 6-3-73 नलोपो नञः (used in step 6) in the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – नञो नस्‍य लोप: स्यादुत्तरपदे। Commenting on this the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – ‘अलुगुत्तरपदे’ इत्यधिकारादिति भावः। Please explain.
Answer: The वृत्तिः of the सूत्रम् 6-3-73 नलोपो नञः mentions उत्तरपदे because this सूत्रम् is in the अधिकार: of उत्तरपदे which runs down from 6-3-1 अलुगुत्तरपदे to the end of the third quarter of Chapter Six of the अष्टाध्यायी।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-4-54 सनि मीमाघुरभलभशकपतपदामच इस् been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-4-54 सनि मीमाघुरभलभशकपतपदामच इस् has been used in the verses in the form विधित्समानः – derived from the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके #३. ११) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘वि’।

धा + सन् । By 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा – In order to express wish/desire, the affix सन् is optionally prescribed after a verbal root (√धा in the present example) which underlies the object (साधु in the present example) of and shares the same agent (अहम् in the present example) with the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८).
    = धा + स । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
    = धिस् + स । By 7-4-54 सनि मीमाघुरभलभशकपतपदामच इस् – ‘इस्’ is substituted for the root-vowel of the following verbal roots when followed by the affix सन् beginning with the letter ‘स्’ (i.e. no augment ‘इट्’) –
    i) √मी (मीञ् हिंसायाम् ९. ४, डुमिञ् प्रक्षेपणे ५. ४ – elongated to “मी” by 6-4-16), ii) √मा (मा माने २. ५७, माङ् माने शब्दे च ३. ७, माङ् माने ४. ३७, मेङ् प्रणिदाने १. १११६ – becomes ‘मा’ by 6-1-45), iii) any verbal root having घु-सञ्ज्ञा (ref: 1-1-20), iv) √रभ् (रभँ राभस्ये १. ११२९), v) √लभ् (डुलभँष् प्राप्तौ १. ११३०), vi) √शक् (शकँ विभाषितो मर्षणे ४. ८४, शकॢँ शक्तौ ५. १७), vii) √पत् (पतॢँ गतौ १. ९७९) and viii) √पद् (पदँ गतौ ४. ६५).
    = धित् + स । By 7-4-49 सः स्यार्द्धधातुके।
    = धित् स् धित् स । By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः।
    = धित् स । By 7-4-58 अत्र लोपोऽभ्यासस्य।
    = धित्स ।
    ’धित्स’ has धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

    धित्स + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = धित्स + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
= धित्स + शानच् । By 3-2-126 लक्षणहेत्वोः क्रियायाः। Note: In the present example the action विधित्समानः (desirous of doing) constitutes a characteristic (लक्षणम्) of another action चरेयम् (should perform.)
    Note: As per 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले and 1-3-62 पूर्ववत् सनः the सन्नन्त-धातुः ‘धित्स’ has taken here the affix ‘शानच्’ which has the designation आत्मनेपदम् (as per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्।)
    = धित्स + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = धित्स + शप् + आन । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
    = धित्स + अ + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = धित्स + आन । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।
    = धित्स मुँक् + आन । By 7-2-82 आने मुक्, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    = धित्स म् + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = धित्समान ।

    वि + धित्समान । ‘धित्समान’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘वि’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
    = विधित्समान ।
    ’विधित्समान’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। In the masculine gender it declines like राम-शब्दः। प्रथमा-एकवचनम् is विधित्समानः – qualifies अहम्।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“One who is not Rudra should not drink poison.” Construct a तत्पुरुष: compound for ‘one who is not Rudra’ = न रुद्र:।
    Answer: अरुद्रः विषम् न पिबेत् = अरुद्रो विषं न पिबेत्।

    Easy questions:
    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘ए’ in the form वर्तते?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे prescribes the substitution ‘ए’ in the form वर्तते – derived from the verbal root √वृत् (वृतुँ वर्तने १. ८६२).

Please see the answer to question 5 in the following comment for derivation of the form वर्तते – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/02/16/गन्तासि-2as-लुँट्/#comment-3301

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-2-80 अतो येयः been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-2-80 अतो येयः has been used in the forms जीवेत् and चरेयम्

    The form जीवेत् is derived from the verbal root √जीव् (जीवँ प्राणधारणे १. ६४३) as follows –
    The विवक्षा is विधिलिँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथमपुरुष:, एकवचनम्।
    जीव् + लिँङ् । By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।

The letter ‘उ’ in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थः)। The letter ‘ट्’ is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes elision by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = जीव् + शप् + यास् त् । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
    = जीव् + अ + यास् त् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = जीव् + अ + इय् त् । By 7-2-80 अतो येयः – When ‘यास्’ of a सार्वधातुकम् affix follows an अङ्गम् ending in the letter ‘अ’, then it is substituted by ‘इय्’।
    = जीव् + अ + इ त् । By 6-1-66 लोपो व्योर्वलि।
    = जीवेत् । By 6-1-87 आद्‍गुणः।

    The form चरेयम् is derived from the verbal root √चर् (चरँ गत्यर्थ:, भक्षणेऽपि १.६४०) as follows –
    The विवक्षा is विधिलिँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, उत्तमपुरुष:, एकवचनम्।
    चर् + लिँङ् । By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।
    = चर् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = चर् + मिप् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्।
    = चर् + अम् । By 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः।
    = चर् + यासुट् अम् । By 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    = चर् + यास् अम् । The letter ‘उ’ in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थः)। The letter ‘ट्’ is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes elision by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = चर् + शप् + यास् अम् । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
    = चर् + अ + यास् अम् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
