Translation – And this Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who knows all the names, inquired about the well being of his kinsmen starting from the young. (For) an unassuming noble person never forgets anything even after acquiring enormous wealth.

लौकिक-विग्रह: –
(1) कुमारमारभ्य = आकुमारम्  । Starting from the young (upwards.)

अलौकिक-विग्रह: –
(2) कुमार ङसिँ + आङ् । By 2-1-13 आङ् मर्यादाभिविध्योः – The indeclinable ‘आङ्’ – when used in the meaning of मर्यादा ‘up to (but excluding) a limit’ or अभिविधि: ‘up to (and including) a limit’ – optionally compounds with a पदम् ending in a fifth case affix to yield a अव्ययीभाव: compound.
Note: विना तेनेति मर्यादा – ‘up to (but excluding) a limit’ is termed as मर्यादा। सह तेनेत्यभिविधि: – ‘up to (and including) a limit’ is termed as अभिविधि:। In the current context ‘आङ्’ is used in the sense of अभिविधिः।

Note: As per 1-4-89 आङ् मर्यादावचने, ‘आङ्’ has the designation कर्मप्रवचनीय: here. Hence as per 2-3-10 पञ्चम्यपाङ्परिभिः, a fifth case affix (’ङसिँ’) is used following the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कुमार’ co-occurring with the कर्मप्रवचनीय: ‘आङ्’।

(3) आङ् + कुमार ङसिँ । By 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – A term denoted by a word ending in a nominative case in a सूत्रम् which prescribes a compound gets the designation ‘उपसर्जन’। Here the term ‘आङ्’ in the सूत्रम् 2-1-13 ends in the nominative case. Therefore ‘आङ्’ gets the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ by 1-2-43. Hence ‘आङ्’ is placed in the prior position in the compound as per the सूत्रम् 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌ – In a compound a term which has the designation ‘उपसर्जन’ should be placed in the prior position.
Note: ‘ आङ् + कुमार ङसिँ’ gets the designation प्रातिपदिकम्‌ by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। This allows 2-4-71 to apply in the next step.

(4) आङ् + कुमार । By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः – A सुँप् affix takes a लुक् elision when it is a part of a धातुः or a प्रातिपदिकम्।

(5) आकुमार । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

(6) आकुमार + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।

(7) आकुमार + अम् । By 2-4-83 नाव्ययीभावादतोऽम्त्वपञ्चम्याः – This सूत्रम् has two parts – (a) नाव्ययीभावादत: – following a अव्ययीभावः compound ending (ref. 1-1-72) in the letter ‘अ’ a सुँप् affix does not take the लुक् elision (which would have been done by 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः) and (b) अम्त्वपञ्चम्याः – following a अव्ययीभावः compound ending (ref. 1-1-72) in the letter ‘अ’ a सुँप् affix – other than a fifth case affix – is substituted by अम्।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of the affix ‘अम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(8) आकुमारम् । By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

  1. 1. Which वार्तिकम् is used to form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘श्री’ (used in the form श्रियम् (द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) in the verse)?
    Answer: The वार्तिकम् (under 3-2-178 अन्येभ्योऽपि दृश्यते) क्विब्वचिप्रच्‍छ्यायतस्‍तुकटप्रुजुश्रीणां दीर्घोऽसम्‍प्रसारणं च is used to form the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘श्री’ – derived from the verbal root √श्रि (श्रिञ् सेवायाम् १. १०४४).

Please see the following post for derivation of the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘श्री’ – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/01/28/श्रीः-fns/

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ been used in the verse?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ has been used in the form अवाप्य – derived from the verbal root √आप् (आपॢँ व्याप्तौ ५. १६) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘अव’।

    आप् + क्त्वा । By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले।
Note: Here the common agent of the actions अवाप्य (after acquiring) and न विस्मरति (does not forget) is सुजनः (noble person). The earlier of the two actions is the action of acquiring which is denoted by √आप् and hence √आप् takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
Note: अव्ययकृतो भावे (from महाभाष्यम्) – कृत् affixes (such as ‘क्‍त्‍वा’) having the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा are used to denote भाव: (action) – and not the agent (ref. 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌) of the action.
    = अव आप् + क्त्वा । ‘आप् + क्त्वा’ is compounded with ‘अव’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
    = अव आप् + ल्यप् । By 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ – When the affix ‘क्त्वा’ occurs at the end of a compound, it is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ provided the prior member of the compound is a अव्‍ययम् other than ‘नञ्’ (ref. 2-2-6 नञ्‌)।
Note: As per 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य, the entire affix ‘क्त्वा’ (and not just its last letter) is replaced by the substitution ‘ल्यप्’।
    = अव आप् + य । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अवाप्य । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।

    ‘अवाप्य’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः with the help of 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ।

    अवाप्य + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
    = अवाप्य । By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः।

    3. Which कृत् affix is used to form the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रश्न’ (used in the commentary)?
    Answer: The कृत् affix ‘नङ्’ is used to form the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रश्न’ – derived from the verbal root √प्रच्छ् (प्रच्छँ ज्ञीप्सायाम् ६.१४९). As per the सूत्रम् 3-3-90 यजयाचयतविच्छप्रच्छरक्षो नङ् – Following the verbal root √यज् (यजँ देवपूजासङ्गतिकरणदानेषु १. ११५७) or √याच् (टुयाचृँ याच्ञायाम् १. १००१) or √यत् (यतीँ प्रयत्ने १. ३०) or √विच्छ् (विच्छँ गतौ ६. १५९) or √प्रच्छ् (प्रच्छँ ज्ञीप्सायाम् ६.१४९) or √रक्ष् (रक्षँ पालने १. ७४६) the affix ‘नङ्’ may be used to denote either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.

Note: Words (except याच्ञा which is used in the feminine) derived by using this सूत्रम् are used in the masculine gender in the language.

Please see answer to question 2 in the following comment for the derivation of the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘प्रश्न’ – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/04/18/यज्ञे-mls/#comment-20032

    4. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Strive till you succeed.” Paraphrase to “Strive till (there is) success.” Form a अव्ययीभाव: compound for ’till success.’ Use the verbal root √यत् (यतीँ प्रयत्ने १. ३०) for ‘to strive’ and the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सिद्धि’ for ‘success.’
    Answer: आसिद्धि यतस्व।

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I will stay here till sunrise.” Form a अव्ययीभाव: compound for ’till sunrise.’ Use the (compound) masculine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सूर्योदय’ for ‘sunrise.’
    Answer: इह आसूर्योदयम् स्थास्यामि = इहासूर्योदयं स्थास्यामि।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Some people are blind from birth while some others become blind after birth.” Form a अव्ययीभाव: compound for ‘from birth.’
Note: The alternate forms आजन्म/आजन्मम् and अनुजन्म/अनजन्मम् are as per the सूत्रम् 5-4-109 नपुंसकादन्यतरस्याम्‌- Following a अव्ययीभाव: compound whose final member is neuter and ends in ‘अन्’ the तद्धित: affix टच् is prescribed optionally and this affix becomes the ending member of the compound.

    Easy questions:
    1. Can you spot the affix श्नम् in the verse?
Answer: The affix श्नम् occurs in the form अन्वयुङ्क्त – derived from the verbal root √युज् (युजिँर् योगे ७. ७).

Please see answer to question 4 in the following comment for derivation of the form अयुङ्क्त – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/10/05/नृशंसम्-nas/#comment-5083

    ‘अनु’ is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    अनु + अयुङ्क्त = अन्वयुङ्क्त । By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-4-89 मेर्निः been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-89 मेर्निः has been used in the form व्याकरवाणि – derived from the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे, तनादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #८. १०).

Please see the following post for derivation of the form करवाणि – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2011/08/12/करवाणि-1as-लोँट्/

    ‘वि’ and ‘आङ्’ are the उपसर्गौ (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    वि + आङ् + करवाणि
    = वि + आ + करवाणि । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = व्याकरवाणि । By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
