Gita Press translation – When Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa (the Bestower of Liberation) bodily departed from this earth, leaving behind His stories which are charming to the ear, that very day entered the Kali age, which leads men of unawakened consciousness to unrighteousness (36). The wise king Yudhiṣṭhira saw the growth of vices like greed, falsehood, deceit and violence etc., not only in the city (of Hastināpura) but in the whole of his state, nay, in every home as well as in the mind of the people, and, concluding therefrom the advance of the Kali age, prepared to depart from this world (37).

गृहे is सप्तमी-एकवचनम् of the नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गृह’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। As per the सूत्रम् 1-4-45 आधारोऽधिकरणम् – That कारकम् (participant in the action) which denotes the location/support – via the agent/object – of an action subsisting in the agent/object is called अधिकरणम् (location.)
In the present example, ‘गृह’ is the कारकम् (participant in the action) which denotes the location/support – via the object तत्परिसर्पणम् – of the action विभाव्य subsisting in the object. Hence ‘गृह’ gets the designation अधिकरणम् (location.)
Note: औपश्‍लेषिको वैषयिकोऽभिव्‍यापकश्‍चेत्‍याधारस्‍त्रिधा – आधारः is of three kinds (i) औपश्‍लेषिक: involving contact or proximity (ii) वैषयिक: involving a subject matter (iii) अभिव्‍यापक: involving pervasion. By 2-3-36 सप्तम्यधिकरणे च – A seventh case affix (‘ङि’, ‘ओस्’, ‘सुप्’) is used to denote अधिकरणम् (location), provided it has not been expressed otherwise. The use of ‘च’ in the सूत्रम् tells us that a seventh case affix is also used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) having the sense of either ‘far’ or ‘near.’

By 6-1-87 आद्गुणः

Questions:

1. Where has the combination of 1-4-45 आधारोऽधिकरणम् and 2-3-36 सप्तम्यधिकरणे च been used in verses 15-20 of Chapter 11 of the गीता?

2. Where else (besides in गृहे) has the combination of 1-4-45 आधारोऽधिकरणम् and 2-3-36 सप्तम्यधिकरणे च been used in the verses?

3. Which कृत् affix is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘बुध’?

4. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-51 णेरनिटि been used in the verses?

5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix ल्युट् used in the form गमनाय (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गमन’, चतुर्थी-एकवचनम्)?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Sīta saw a beautiful deer in the forest.”

Easy questions:

1. Can you spot the affix शप् in the verses?

2. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु been used in the verses?

  1. 1. Where has the combination of 1-4-45 आधारोऽधिकरणम् and 2-3-36 सप्तम्यधिकरणे च been used in verses 15-20 of Chapter 11 of the गीता?
Answer: The combination of 1-4-45 आधारोऽधिकरणम् and 2-3-36 सप्तम्यधिकरणे च been used in Chapter 11 of the गीता in the form देहे (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘देह’, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) in the following verse –

‘देह’ is the कारकम् (participant in the action) which denotes the location/support – via the objects देवान् etc. – of the action पश्यामि subsisting in the objects. Hence ‘देह’ gets the designation अधिकरणम् (location) by the सूत्रम् 1-4-45 आधारोऽधिकरणम्। Here the आधारः is औपश्‍लेषिक: – involving contact or proximity.
And as per the सूत्रम् 2-3-36 सप्तम्यधिकरणे च, the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘देह’ takes a seventh case affix to give the form देहे।

    2. Where else (besides in गृहे) has the combination of 1-4-45 आधारोऽधिकरणम् and 2-3-36 सप्तम्यधिकरणे च been used in the verses?
    Answer: The combination of 1-4-45 आधारोऽधिकरणम् and 2-3-36 सप्तम्यधिकरणे च has also been used in the forms पुरे (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पुर’, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्), राष्ट्रे (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘राष्ट्र’, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) and आत्मनि (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘आत्मन्’, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) in the verses.

    3. Which कृत् affix is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘बुध’?
    Answer: The कृत् affix ‘’ is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘बुध’ – derived from the verbal root √बुध् (बुधँ अवगमने १.

Please see the following post for derivation of the

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-51 णेरनिटि been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-51 णेरनिटि has been used in the verses in the form विभाव्य – derived from the causative form of the verbal root √भू (भू सत्तायाम् १. १) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘वि’।

By 3-1-26 हेतुमति च।
By 7-2-115 अचो ञ्णिति।
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
    ‘भावि’ gets the धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः।

By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले।
Note: Here the common agent of the actions विभाव्य (concluding) and पर्यधात् (prepared) is युधिष्ठिरः। The earlier of the two actions is the action of concluding which is denoted by √भू and hence √भू takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
Note: अव्ययकृतो भावे (from महाभाष्यम्) – कृत् affixes (such as ‘क्‍त्‍वा’) having the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा are used to denote भाव: (action) – and not the agent (ref. 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌) of the action.
‘भावि + क्त्वा’ is compounded with ‘वि’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
By 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ – When the affix ‘क्त्वा’ occurs at the end of a compound, it is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ provided the prior member of the compound is a अव्‍ययम् other than ‘नञ्’ (ref. 2-2-6). The entire term ‘क्त्वा’ is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
Note: As per 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ, the substitution ‘ल्यप्’ (in place of the affix ‘क्त्वा’) inherits the property of being a कित् (having the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) affix with the designation कृत् (by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्) and आर्धधातुकम् (by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।)
Note: Since the affix ‘य’ does not begin with a वल् letter it cannot take the augment ‘इट्’ (by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।)
By 6-4-51 णेरनिटि – The affix ‘णि’ is elided when followed by a आर्धधातुकम् affix which does not have the augment इट्।

    ‘विभाव्य’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः with the help of 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ।
    विभाव्य + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः।

    5. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the affix ल्युट् used in the form गमनाय (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गमन’, चतुर्थी-एकवचनम्)?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-115 ल्युट् च prescribes the affix ल्युट् in the नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गमन’ – derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १.

By 3-3-115 ल्युट् च – (In addition to the affix ‘क्त’ prescribed by the prior सूत्रम् 3-3-114) the affix ल्युट् may also be used following a verbal root to denote in the neuter gender the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state.
By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Sīta saw a beautiful deer in the forest.”

    Easy questions:
    1. Can you spot the affix शप् in the verses?
Answer: The affix शप् occurs in the verses in the form अन्ववर्तत – derived from the verbal root √वृत् (वृतुँ वर्तने १.

Please see answer to question 4 in the following comment for derivation of the form

    ‘अनु’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-4-77 गातिस्थाघुपाभूभ्यः सिचः परस्मैपदेषु has been used in the verses in the form पर्यधात् – derived from the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११).

Please see answer to question 3 in the following comment for derivation of the form
    ‘परि’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
