यानि nAp

Today we will look at the form यानि nAp from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 10.1.3.

Gita Press translation – (Pray,) narrate to us in detail (all) those deeds which the (said) Lord, the Soul of the universe and the Protector of created beings, performed, appearing in the line of Yadu (3). What man other than the killer of animals would desist from a recital of the excellences of the illustrious Lord – a (sure) remedy for (the malady of) transmigration, (and highly) pleasing to the ear as well as to the mind, and constantly sung (even) by souls from whom the thirst for pleasure has departed (for ever) (4).

यानि is नपुंसकलिङ्गे द्वितीया-बहुवचनम् of the सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘यद्’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। As per 2-3-69 न लोकाव्ययनिष्ठाखलर्थतृनाम्‌ – A sixth case affix (‘ङस्’, ‘ओस्’, ‘आम्’) is not used (to denote कर्ता (the doer) or कर्म (the object)) of an action denoted by any one of the following –
(i) (a word ending in a substitute in place of) the affix ‘ल्’ (लँट्, लिँट् etc.)
(ii) (a word ending in) the affix ‘उ’ or an affix ending in ‘उ’
(iii) (a word ending in) the affix ‘उक’
(iv) an indeclinable
(v) (a word ending in) a निष्ठा affix (ref.
(vi) (a word ending in) the affix ‘खल्’ or any affix having the same meaning as that of ‘खल्’
(vii) (a word ending in) an affix from the प्रत्याहार: ‘तृन्’ which is formed starting from ‘तृ’ in 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे down to 3-2-135 तृन्
In the present example the object ‘यद्’ is associated with the निष्ठा form कृतवान् (‘performed’, प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कृतवत्’ पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्), which ends in the affix ‘क्तवतुँ’ (prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-2-102 निष्ठा।) Therefore ‘यद्’ takes the second case affix ‘शस्’ (prescribed by the सूत्रम् 2-3-2 कर्मणि द्वितीया) and not the sixth case affix ‘आम्’ (which would have been prescribed by the सूत्रम् 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति)।

Note: As per 1-4-104 विभक्तिश्च the affix ‘शस्’ has the designation विभक्ति:। This allows 7-2-102 to apply in the next step.

By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः – The ending letter of the pronouns, starting with ‘त्यद्’ and ending with ‘द्वि’, is replaced by ‘अ’ when followed by a विभक्ति: affix. As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending letter ‘द्’ of the अङ्गम् ‘यद्’ is replaced by the letter ‘अ’।

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

By 7-1-20 जश्शसोः शिः – The affixes ‘जस्’ and ‘शस्’ get ‘शि’ as the replacement when they follow a neuter अङ्गम्।

By 7-1-72 नपुंसकस्य झलचः – When a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix follows, the neuter bases that end in a झल् letter or an अच् (vowel) get the नुँम् augment. As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः, the ‘नुँम्’ augment is placed after the last अच् (the letter ‘अ’ after the letter ‘य्’) in ‘य’।

By 6-4-8 सर्वनामस्थाने चासम्बुद्धौ – The penultimate letter of the अङ्गम् (base) ending in the letter ‘न्’ gets elongated if it is followed by a non-vocative affix having the designation सर्वनामस्थानम्।

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-3-69 न लोकाव्ययनिष्ठाखलर्थतृनाम्‌ been used in verses 74-75 of Chapter Eighteen of the गीता?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-69 न लोकाव्ययनिष्ठाखलर्थतृनाम्‌ has been used in the form श्रुतवान् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘श्रुतवत्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) in the following verse –

श्रुतवान् (‘heard’) is पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘श्रुतवत्’ which ends in the affix ‘क्तवतुँ’ (prescribed by 3-2-102 निष्ठा।) The affix ‘क्तवतुँ’ gets the designation निष्ठा by 1-1-26 क्तक्तवतू निष्ठा। Therefore 2-3-69 न लोकाव्ययनिष्ठाखलर्थतृनाम्‌ prevents the object ‘गुह्य’ (along with its pronoun ‘एतद्’ and adjective ‘पर’) of the action (to hear) from taking a sixth case affix (which would have been prescribed by the सूत्रम् 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति)। Instead ‘गुह्य’ (as well as ‘एतद्’ and ‘पर’) takes the second case affix ‘अम्’ (prescribed by the सूत्रम् 2-3-2 कर्मणि द्वितीया)।

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘ई’ in the form उपगीयमानात्?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-66 घुमास्थागापाजहातिसां हलि prescribes the substitution ‘ई’ in the form उपगीयमानात् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘उपगीयमान’, पुंलिङ्गे पञ्चमी-एकवचनम्) – derived from the verbal root √गै (गै शब्दे १.

By 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे। Note: This is a कर्मणि प्रयोगः। Hence as per 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः, a आत्मनेपदम् affix must be used. As per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। Hence the affix ‘शानच्’ (and not ‘शतृँ’ which has the designation परस्मैपदम् as per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्) is used here.
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
By 6-4-66 घुमास्थागापाजहातिसां हलि – The letter ‘आ’ of the verbal roots having the घु-सञ्ज्ञा and the verbal roots √मा [मेङ् प्रणिदाने १. २६ as well as the गा-आदेश: done in place of इण् गतौ २. ४१, as well as the गाङ्-आदेश: in the place of इङ् अध्ययने (नित्यमधिपूर्वः) २. ४२] gets letter ‘ई’ as replacement, when followed by a हलादि: (beginning with a consonant) आर्धधातुकम् affix which is a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) or a ङित् (has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्)।

‘गीयमान’ is compounded with the उपसर्गः ‘उप’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
It is an adjective and declines like राम-शब्द: in the masculine gender.

    3. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ has been used in the verses in the form अवतीर्य – derived from the verbal root √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १. ११२४) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘अव’।

By 3-4-21 समानकर्तृकयोः पूर्वकाले।
Note: Here the common agent of the actions अवतीर्य (appearing) and कृतवान् (performed) is भगवान् (Lord). The earlier of the two actions is the action of appearing which is denoted by √तॄ and hence √तॄ takes the affix ‘क्त्वा’।
Note: अव्ययकृतो भावे (from महाभाष्यम्) – कृत् affixes (such as ‘क्‍त्‍वा’) having the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा are used to denote भाव: (action) – and not the agent (ref. 3-4-67 कर्तरि कृत्‌) of the action.
‘तॄ + क्त्वा’ is compounded with ‘अव’ using the सूत्रम् 2-2-18 कुगतिप्रादयः।
By 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्‌ – When the affix ‘क्त्वा’ occurs at the end of a compound, it is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ provided the prior member of the compound is a अव्‍ययम् other than ‘नञ्’ (ref. 2-2-6). The entire term ‘क्त्वा’ is replaced by ‘ल्यप्’ as per the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
Note: As per 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ, the substitution ‘ल्यप्’ (in place of the affix ‘क्त्वा’) inherits the property of being a कित् (having the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) affix with the designation कृत् (by 3-1-93 कृदतिङ्) and आर्धधातुकम् (by 3-4-114 आर्धधातुकं शेषः।)
By 8-2-77 हलि च।

    ‘अवतीर्य’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः with the help of 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ।

    अवतीर्य + सुँ (default) । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
By 2-4-82 अव्ययादाप्सुपः।

    4. Which वार्तिकम् may we use to justify the use of the affix ‘क’ in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पशुघ्न’?
Answer: The use of the affix ‘क’ in the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पशुघ्न’ may be justified by the वार्तिकम् (under 3-2-5 तुन्दशोकयोः परिमृजापनुदोः) मूलविभुजादिभ्यः कः – The affix ‘क’ may be used to derive forms such as ‘मूलविभुज’।

Note: The मूलविभुजादि-गण: is a आकृति-गण:। The members of this गण: have not been explicitly listed. When we see a शिष्ट-प्रयोगः (usage accepted by the scholars) such as ‘पशुघ्न’ wherein the grammatical operations (based on the affix ‘क’) are similar to those in ‘मूलविभुज’ we have to understand that this usage is included in the मूलविभुजादि-गण:।

The derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पशुघ्न’ is similar to the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शत्रुघ्न’ as shown in the following post – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/10/15/शत्रुघ्नः-mns/

    5. Can you spot the affix ‘णिनिँ’ in the commentary?
    Answer: The affix ‘णिनिँ’ occurs in the form पशुघातिनः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पशुघातिन्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)।

    ‘घातिन्’ is a कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् (participle form) derived from the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २).
The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पशुघातिन्’ is derived as follows:
By 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये – When in composition with a सुबन्तं पदम् (a पदम् which ends in a सुँप् affix) which does not denote a class/genus, a verbal root may take the affix ‘णिनिँ’ to express the meaning of a habitual/natural action.
Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-78, the term सुपि ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘पशु + आम्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
Note: The affix ‘आम्’ is used here as per 2-3-65 कर्तृकर्मणोः कृति। (This is what is called as कृद्योगे षष्ठी)।
By 7-3-54 हो हन्तेर्ञ्णिन्नेषु।
By 7-3-32 हनस्तोऽचिण्णलोः।
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
We form a compound between ‘पशु + आम्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘घातिन्’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। In the compound, ‘पशु + आम्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌। Note: Here ‘पशु + आम्’ is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम् – A term denoted by a word (in this case ‘उपपदम्’) ending in a nominative case in a सूत्रम् (in this case 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्) which prescribes a compound gets the designation ‘उपसर्जन’।
This allows us to apply 2-4-71 in the next step.
By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of the affix ‘जस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
    “I heard what you said.”

    Easy questions:
    1. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-105 अतो हेः been used in the verses?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-105 अतो हेः has been used in the form वद – derived from the verbal root √वद् (वदँ व्यक्तायां वाचि १. As per 6-4-105, there is an elision of the affix ‘हि’ when it follows a अङ्गम् ending in the letter ‘अ’।

Please see the answer to question 2 in the following comment for derivation of the form

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the elision of the letter ‘न्’ in the form विरज्येत?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-24 अनिदितां हल उपधायाः क्ङिति prescribes the elision of the letter ‘न्’ in the form विरज्येत – derived from the verbal root √रन्ज् (रन्जँ रागे १.

By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ्।
By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः।
The letter ‘उ’ in सीयुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The letter ‘ट्’ is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
By 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्त्यस्य।
By 6-1-66 लोपो व्योर्वलि।
By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
By 6-4-24 अनिदितां हल उपधायाः क्ङिति – The penultimate letter ‘न्’ of bases that end in a consonant and that do not have letter ‘इ’ as a marker, takes लोपः when followed by an affix that has letter ‘क्’ or letter ‘ङ्’ as a marker. Note: The affix ‘यक्’ is a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as इत्)। This allows 6-4-24 to apply.
By 6-1-87 आद्‌गुणः।

    ‘वि’ is the उपसर्गः (ref.
