Gita Press translation – They killed in mere sport Kaṁsa, who possessed the strength of (not less than) ten thousand elephants, and (his) two (principal) wrestlers (Cāṇūra and Muṣṭika) as well as Kuvalayapīḍa (the chief of his elephants) (just) as a lion (the king of beasts) would kill (a number of) animals (24). Kṛṣṇa snapped the most powerful bow (of Kaṁsa) measuring 3 Tālas (equivalent to 27 spans), (even) as a leader of elephants would break a sugarcane, and held the (Govardhana) hill with one hand for a (full) week (25).

सप्ताहम् is द्वितीया-एकवचनम् of the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सप्ताह’।

‘सप्ताह’ gets the द्वितीया-विभक्तिः by 2-3-5 कालाध्वनोरत्यन्तसंयोगे – A second case affix (‘अम्’, ‘औट्’, ‘शस्’) is used following a प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) denoting (measure of) time or (measure of) path/road when continuous connection (with a quality or action or thing) is meant.

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌, 2-3-5 कालाध्वनोरत्यन्तसंयोगे1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of the affix ‘अम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्व: – In place of a preceding letter ‘अक्’ and the following vowel (‘अच्’) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 2-3-5 कालाध्वनोरत्यन्तसंयोगे been used in the last ten verses of Chapter Six of the Geeta?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-3-5 कालाध्वनोरत्यन्तसंयोगे has been used to assign a second case affix to the स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘समा’ (and its adjective ‘शाश्वती’) in the following verse of Chapter Six of the Geeta –

    2. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-3-5 कालाध्वनोरत्यन्तसंयोगे the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says – अत्यन्तसंयोगे किम्? Please explain.
Answer: What is the purpose of stipulating the condition अत्यन्तसंयोगे (‘continuous connection’) in the सूत्रम् 2-3-5 कालाध्वनोरत्यन्तसंयोगे? Consider the example मासस्य द्विरधीते – (Someone) studies twice during a month. Since the action of studying is not occuring continuously in the time period (of a month) the सूत्रम् 2-3-5 does not apply and ‘मास’ does not take a second case affix. If the condition अत्यन्तसंयोगे were not mentioned, the सूत्रम् 2-3-5 would have applied here also which would have been undesirable.

    3. Which सूत्रम् is used to justify the affix क्विँप् used to compose the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘राज्’ (used in the compound इभराट्)?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-2-178 अन्येभ्योऽपि दृश्यते may be used to justify the affix क्विँप् used to compose the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘राज्’।

A king/chief (one who habitually/naturally shines.)

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘राज्’ is derived from the verbal root √राज् (राजृँ दीप्तौ १. ९५६) as follows –
By 3-2-178 अन्येभ्योऽपि दृश्यते – To denote an agent who performs an action because of his nature/habit or sense of duty or skill, the affix ‘क्विँप्’ is seen being used following other verbal roots also (in addition to those mentioned in the prior सूत्रम् 3-2-177.)
    Now ‘राज्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्।

    4. Which कृत् affix is used to compose the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अधिप’ (used as part of the compound मृगाधिपः)?
    Answer: The कृत् affix ‘क’ is used to derive the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अधिप’ derived from verbal root √पा (पा रक्षणे २. ५१).

Please see answer to question 4 in the following comment for derivation of the form ‘अधिप’ – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/04/01/रणे-mls/#comment-19305

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“(Please) wait for a second.” Paraphrase to passive (भावे प्रयोग:) – “Let it be waited for a second.” Use the verbal root √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ १. १०७७) for ‘to wait.’

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Śrī Rāma lived in the forest for fourteen years.”

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘वध’ in अवधिष्टाम्?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 2-4-43 लुङि च prescribes the substitution ‘वध’ in अवधीत् – derived from √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. २).

By 3-2-110 लुङ्। As per 2-4-43 लुङि च – When the intention is to add the affix लुँङ्, there is a substitution of ‘वध’ in place of √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २).
Note: The substitute ‘वध’ ends in the letter ‘अ’।
By 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः। Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of ‘ताम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्।
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ does not apply here because ‘वध’ is अनेकाच् (has more than one vowel.)
By 6-4-48 अतो लोपः।
By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययोः।
By 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य has been used in the form बभञ्ज – derived from the verbal root √भञ्ज् (भन्जोँ आमर्दने ७. १६) as follows –

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-82 परस्मैपदानां णलतुसुस्थलथुसणल्वमाः।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य – When लिँट् follows a verbal root, there is reduplication of the first portion – containing a single vowel – of the verbal root which is not already reduplicated. But if the verbal root (that has more than one vowel) begins with a vowel, then the reduplication is of the second portion – containing a single vowel.
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 8-4-54 अभ्यासे चर्च।
