कैकेयीम् fAs

Today we will look at the form कैकेयीम् fAs from श्रीमद्-वाल्मीकि-रामायणम् 2.7.13.

Gita Press translation – “Tomorrow under the asterism Puṣya, (she added) will Emperor Daśaratha positively install in the office of Prince Regent the sinless Rāma (a scion of Raghu), who has conquered wrath.” (11) Filled with indignation to hear the report of the nurse, the hunchbacked maid-servant for her part got down at once from (the roof of) the palace, which resembled in shape a peak of Kailāsa (12). Burning with anger, Mantharā, who scented foul play (in the move of the Emperor), spoke as follows to Kaikeyī even while she was reposing (in bed) :- (13) “Get up, O deluded one! How can you keep lying down? Peril stares you in the face! You do not perceive yourself threatened by a flood of misery!” (14)

Note: These verses have previously appeared in the following post – प्रासादात्-m-ab-s

Here the verbal root √ब्रू (ब्रूञ् व्यक्तायां वाचि २. ३९) has taken two objects वचनम् (नुपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वचन’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) and कैकेयीम् (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘कैकेयी’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

Here ‘कैकेयी’ is the secondary object (गौण-कर्म) of the verbal root √ब्रू (ब्रूञ् व्यक्तायां वाचि २. ३९). The primary object (प्रधान-कर्म/मुख्य-कर्म) being ‘वचन’।

‘कैकेयी’ gets the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-51 अकथितं च – A कारकम् (participant in the action) which has no other specific designation like अपादानम् (ablation) etc gets the designation कर्म (object.)

Note:
दुह्‍याच्‍पच्‍दण्‍ड्रुधिप्रच्‍छिचिब्रूशासुजिमथ्‍मुषाम् ।

दुहादीनां द्वादशानां तथा नीप्रभृतीनां चतुर्णां कर्मणा यद्युज्यते तदेवाकथितं कर्मेति परिगणनं कर्तव्यमित्यर्थ:।
A कारकम् (participant in the action) which connects with the primary object of any one of only the following 12 + 4 = 16 verbal roots (and their synonyms) gets the designation कर्म as long as no other specific designation like अपादानम् etc has been assigned to it –

and

(xiii) √नी (णीञ् प्रापणे १. १०४९)
(xiv) √हृ (हृञ् हरणे १. १०४६)
(xv) √कृष् (कृषँ विलेखने १. ११४५)
(xvi) √वह् (वहँ प्रापणे १. ११५९)

Note: The above 12 + 4 = 16 verbal roots (and their synonyms) are called द्विकर्मका: because they are capable of taking two objects – a primary object (प्रधान-कर्म/मुख्य-कर्म) and a secondary object (गौण-कर्म)। The प्रधान-कर्म/मुख्य-कर्म gets the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-49 कर्तुरीप्सिततमं कर्म and the गौण-कर्म gets the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-51 अकथितं च।

(1) कैकेयी + अम् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। Since ‘कैकेयी’ has the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-51 अकथितं च, it takes a second case affix by 2-3-2 कर्मणि द्वितीया – A second case affix (‘अम्’, ‘औट्’, ‘शस्’) is used to denote कर्म (object of the action) provided it has not been expressed otherwise.
Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of ‘अम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(2) कैकेयीम् । By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्व: – In place of a preceding ‘अक्’ letter and the following vowel (‘अच्’) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च been used for the first time in Chapter Ten of the गीता?

2. If the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च were not to be used (to assign the designation कर्म to ‘कैकेयी’) which designation would ‘कैकेयी’ take?
i) करणम्
ii) सम्प्रदानम्
iii) अपादानम्
iv) अधिकरणम्

3. Please give the passive form of the sentence – मन्थरा कैकेयीमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्।

4. In the verses, can you spot two words which contain the substitution शानच् (in place of लँट्)?

5. What is an alternate grammatical form for मूढे?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Tell me what the teacher told you.”

Easy questions:

1. Can you spot the affix श्यन् in the verses?

2. Why is अवरोहत a आर्ष-प्रयोग: (an irregular grammatical usage)?

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च been used for the first time in Chapter Ten of the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च has been used for the first time in Chapter Ten of the गीता in the following verse –
    सर्वमेतदृतं मन्ये यन्मां वदसि केशव |
    न हि ते भगवन्व्यक्तिं विदुर्देवा न दानवाः || 10-14||
    Here वदसि (derived from the verbal root √वद् (वदँ व्यक्तायां वाचि १. ११६४)) has taken two objects यत् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘यद्’, नपुंसकलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) and माम् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अस्मद्’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

माम् is the secondary object (गौण-कर्म) of वदसि। The primary object (प्रधान-कर्म/मुख्य-कर्म) being यत्।

    2. If the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च were not to be used (to assign the designation कर्म to ‘कैकेयी’) which designation would ‘कैकेयी’ take?
    i) करणम्
    ii) सम्प्रदानम्
    iii) अपादानम्
    iv) अधिकरणम्
Answer: ii) सम्प्रदानम्। The form would be कैकेय्यै।

    3. Please give the passive form of the sentence – मन्थरा कैकेयीमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्।
    Answer: मन्थरया कैकेयीदं वचनमौच्यत।

    4. In the verses, can you spot two words which contain the substitution शानच् (in place of लँट्)?
Answer: The substitution शानच् (in place of लँट्) has been used in the words दह्यमाना and शयानाम्

    The feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दह्यमाना’ is derived from the verbal root √दह् (दहँ भस्मीकरणे १. ११४६) as follows –
    दह् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = दह् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = दह् + शानच् । By 3-2-126 लक्षणहेत्वोः क्रियायाः। Note: This is a कर्मणि प्रयोगः। Hence as per 1-3-13 भावकर्मणोः, a आत्मनेपदम् affix must be used. As per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, ‘शानच्’ has the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। Hence the affix ‘शानच्’ (and not ‘शतृँ’) is used here.
    = दह् + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = दह् + यक् + आन । By 3-1-67 सार्वधातुके यक्।
    = दह् + य + आन । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = दह् य मुँक् + आन । By 7-2-82 आने मुक् – The letter ‘अ’ belonging to a अङ्गम् takes the augment मुँक् when followed by ‘आन’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ – the augment मुँक् joins after the letter ‘अ’।
    = दह्य म् + आन = दह्यमान । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

‘दह्यमान’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। Since it is an adjective to the feminine form मन्थरा we have to add the appropriate feminine affix –
    दह्यमान + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।
    = दह्यमान + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = दह्यमाना । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः। The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘दह्यमाना’ declines like रमा-शब्द:। प्रथमा-एकवचनम् is दह्यमाना।

Please see the following post for the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शयान’ – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/12/25/शयानान्-map/

Since it is an adjective to the feminine form कैकेयीम् we have to add the appropriate feminine affix –
    शयान + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।
    = शयान + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = शयाना । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः। The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘शयाना’ declines like रमा-शब्द:। द्वितीया-एकवचनम् is शयानाम्।

    5. What is an alternate grammatical form for मूढे?
Answer: The alternate grammatical form for (हे) मूढे is (हे) मुग्धे

    The feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मुग्धा’ is derived from the verbal root √मुह् (मुहँ वैचित्ये ४. ९५) as follows:
    मुह् + क्त । By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। Note: The affix ‘क्त’ has been used कर्तरि here as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च।
    = मुह् + त । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    Note: The optional augment ‘इट्’ that would have been prescribed by 7-2-45 रधादिभ्यश्च is stopped by 7-2-15 यस्य विभाषा। And 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च from applying.
    = मुघ् + त । By 8-2-33 वा द्रुहमुहष्णुहष्णिहाम् – वृत्ति: एषां हस्‍य वा घ: स्याज्झलि पदान्‍ते च । The ending letter ‘ह्’ of the verbal roots √द्रुह् (द्रुहँ जिघांसायाम् ४. ९४), √मुह् (मुहँ वैचित्त्ये ४. ९५), √स्नुह् (ष्णुहँ उद्गिरणे ४. ९६) and √स्निह् (ष्णिहँ प्रीतौ ४. ९७) is optionally replaced by the letter ‘घ्’ when either (i) followed by a झल् letter or (ii) at the end of a पदम्।
Note: We have not studied 8-2-33 in the class but we have used it in a previous comment in answer to advanced question 1 – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2013/01/01/सन्-mns/#comment-13167
    = मुघ् + ध । By 8-2-40 झषस्तथोर्धोऽधः।
    = मुग्ध । By 8-4-53 झलां जश् झशि।
    ‘मुग्ध’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।
    मुग्ध + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।
    = मुग्ध + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = मुग्धा । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः। The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मुग्धा’ declines like रमा-शब्द:। सम्बुद्धि: is (हे) मुग्धे।

The optional feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मूढा’ is derived from the verbal root √मुह् (मुहँ वैचित्ये ४. ९५) as follows:
    मुह् + क्त । By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। Note: The affix ‘क्त’ has been used कर्तरि here as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च।
    = मुह् + त । अनुबन्ध-लोप: by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    Note: The optional augment ‘इट्’ that would have been prescribed by 7-2-45 रधादिभ्यश्च is stopped by 7-2-15 यस्य विभाषा। And 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च from applying.
    = मुढ् + त । By 8-2-31 हो ढः। Note: This is the case where we don’t apply the optional सूत्रम् 8-2-33 वा द्रुहमुहष्णुहष्णिहाम्।
    = मुढ् + ध । By 8-2-40 झषस्तथोर्धोऽधः।
    = मुढ् + ढ । By 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः।
= मु + ढ । By 8-3-13 ढो ढे लोपः। Note: The situation of the letter ‘ढ्’ followed by the letter ‘ढ्’ only arises after applying 8-4-41. So even though 8-3-13 is an earlier rule (compared to 8-4-41) in the अष्टाध्यायी, it has to be allowed (in spite of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्) to see the operation done by 8-4-41, for otherwise 8-3-13 would become useless.
= मू + ढ । By 6-3-111 ढ्रलोपे पूर्वस्य दीर्घोऽणः। Note: The situation of the elision of the letter ‘ढ्’ or the letter ‘र्’ (रेफ:) only arises after applying 8-3-13/8-3-14. So even though 6-3-111 is an earlier rule (compared to 8-3-13/8-3-14) in the अष्टाध्यायी, it has to be allowed (in spite of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्) to see the operation done by 8-3-13/8-3-14, for otherwise 6-3-111 would become useless.
    ‘मूढ’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।
    मूढ + टाप् । By 4-1-4 अजाद्यतष्टाप्‌।
    = मूढ + आ । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-7 चुटू, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = मूढा । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः। The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘मूढा’ declines like रमा-शब्द:। सम्बुद्धि: is (हे) मूढे।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Tell me what the teacher told you.”
    Answer: यत् त्वाम् गुरु: अब्रवीत् तत् माम् ब्रूहि = यत् त्वां गुरुरब्रवीत् तन् मां ब्रूहि ।

    Easy questions:

    1. Can you spot the affix श्यन् in the verses?
Answer: The affix श्यन् has been used in the form अवबुध्यसे derived from the verbal root √बुध् (बुधँ अवगमने ४. ६८) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘अव’ as follows –

    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, मध्यम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    बुध् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = बुध् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = बुध् + थास् । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम्।
    = बुध् + से । By 3-4-80 थासस्से।
    = बुध् + श्यन् + से । By 3-1-69 दिवादिभ्यः श्यन् – The affix ‘श्यन्’ is placed after the verbal roots belonging to the दिवादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुकम् affix that is used signifying the agent. This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
    Note: Since the सार्वधातुकम् affix ‘श्यन्’ is अपित् (does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्) by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्। This allows 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च to prevent 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च from applying.
    = बुध् + य + से । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = बुध्यसे ।

    ‘अव’ is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    अव + बुध्यसे = अवबुध्यसे ।

    2. Why is अवरोहत a आर्ष-प्रयोग: (an irregular grammatical usage)?
Answer: The form अवरोहत is a आर्ष-प्रयोग: (an irregular grammatical usage) because the augment अट् is missing and also because a आत्मनेपदम् affix has been used (instead of the expected परस्मैपदम्।) It is derived from the verbal root √रुह् (रुहँ बीजजन्मनि प्रादुर्भावे च १. ९९५) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘अव’। The grammatically correct form is अवारोहत् derived as follows –

    The विवक्षा is लँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोगः, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
    रुह्+ लँङ् । By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्चस।
    = रुह् + शप् + त् । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
    = रुह् + अ + त् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = रोह् + अ + त् । By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
    = अट् रोहत् । By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः, 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ।
    = अरोहत् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।

    ‘अव’ is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
    अव + अरोहत् = अवारोहत् । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः।
