तम् mAs

Today we will look at the form तम् mAs from रघुवंशम् verse 12-17.

Translation – But finding that it was impossible to persuade him to return, on account of the command of their departed father, he begged him for his sandals that they may, in his absence, serve as the supreme divinities of the realm (17).

Note: The above verse has been discussed in detail in the Thursday class on August 25th 2011 Video and on September 1st 2011 Video.

Here ययाचे (derived from the verbal root √याच् (टुयाचृँ याच्ञायाम् १. १००१)) has taken two objects तम् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘तद्’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) and पादुके (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पादुका’, द्वितीया-द्विवचनम्)।

तम् is the secondary object (गौण-कर्म) of ययाचे। The primary object (प्रधान-कर्म/मुख्य-कर्म) being पादुके।

‘तद्’ gets the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-51 अकथितं च – A कारकम् (participant in the action) which has no other specific designation like अपादानम् (ablation) etc gets the designation कर्म (object.)

Note:

A कारकम् (participant in the action) which connects with the primary object of any one of only the following 12 + 4 = 16 verbal roots (and their synonyms) gets the designation कर्म as long as no other specific designation like अपादानम् etc has been assigned to it –

and

Note: The above 12 + 4 = 16 verbal roots (and their synonyms) are called द्विकर्मका: because they are capable of taking two objects – a primary object (प्रधान-कर्म/मुख्य-कर्म) and a secondary object (गौण-कर्म)। The प्रधान-कर्म/मुख्य-कर्म gets the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-49 कर्तुरीप्सिततमं कर्म and the गौण-कर्म gets the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-51 अकथितं च।

‘तद्’ gets the सर्वनाम-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-27 सर्वादीनि सर्वनामानि।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। Since ‘तद्’ has the कर्म-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-51 अकथितं च, it takes a second case affix by 2-3-2 कर्मणि द्वितीया – A second case affix (‘अम्’, ‘औट्’, ‘शस्’) is used to denote कर्म (object of the action) provided it has not been expressed otherwise.
Note: 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of ‘अम्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः – The ending letter of the pronouns, starting with ‘त्यद्’ and ending with ‘द्वि’, is replaced by ‘अ’ when followed by a विभक्ति: affix. As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending letter ‘द्’ gets replaced.

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे – In the place of the letter ‘अ’ which is not at the end of a पदम्, and the following गुण: letter, there is single substitute of the latter (the गुण: letter.)

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्व: – In place of a preceding ‘अक्’ letter and the following vowel (‘अच्’) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

Questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च been used for the first time in Chapter Two of the गीता?

2. In the post, if the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च were not to be used (to assign the designation कर्म to ‘तद्’) which designation would ‘तद्’ take?
i) करणम्
ii) सम्प्रदानम्
iii) अपादानम्
iv) अधिकरणम्

3. Please give the passive form of the sentence – [

4. What is an alternate form for अपाक्रष्टुम्?

5. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of the affix तुमुँन् in the form कर्तुम् used in the verse?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“O Lord! Please forgive me.” Paraphrase to “O Lord! I beg forgiveness from You.” Use the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् ‘क्षमा’ for ‘forgiveness.’

Easy questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-18 औङ आपः been used in the verses?

2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘ए’ in ययाचे?

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च been used for the first time in Chapter Two of the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च has been used for the first time in Chapter Two of the गीता in the following verse –
    Here उवाच (derived from the verbal root √वच् (वचँ परिभाषणे २. ३९)) has taken two objects तम् (सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘तद्’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्) and वाक्यम् (नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वाक्य’, द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

तम् is the secondary object (गौण-कर्म) of उवाच। The primary object (प्रधान-कर्म/मुख्य-कर्म) being वाक्यम्।

    2. In the post, if the सूत्रम् 1-4-51 अकथितं च were not to be used (to assign the designation कर्म to ‘तद्’) which designation would ‘तद्’ take?
    i) करणम्
    ii) सम्प्रदानम्
    iii) अपादानम्
    iv) अधिकरणम्
Answer: iii) अपादानम्। The form would be तस्मात्।

    3. Please give the passive form of the sentence – [

    4. What is an alternate form for अपाक्रष्टुम्?
    Answer: The alternate form for अपाक्रष्टुम् is अपाकर्ष्टुम् – derived from the verbal root √कृष् (कृषँ विलेखने १. ६) preceded by the उपसर्गौ ‘अप’ and ‘आङ्’।

By 3-4-65 शकधृषज्ञाग्लाघटरभलभक्रमसहार्हास्त्यर्थेषु तुमुन्।
Note: Here 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix तुम् from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
Now as per the सूत्रम् 6-1-59 अनुदात्तस्य चर्दुपधस्यान्यतरस्याम् – When followed by an affix which is अकित् (does not have the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) and which begins with a झल् letter, a verbal root which is अनुदात्तोपदेशः and has a penultimate letter ‘ऋ’ optionally takes the augment ‘अम्’।

When the optional augment अम् is used we get the form अपाक्रष्टुम् as follows –

By 6-1-59 अनुदात्तस्य चर्दुपधस्यान्यतरस्याम्। As per the सूत्रम् 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात् परः the augment अम् joins after the last vowel ‘ऋ’ of ‘कृष्’।
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
By 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः।

When the optional augment अम् is not used we get the form अपाकर्ष्टुम् as follows –
By 8-4-41 ष्टुना ष्टुः।

    ‘अपाक्रष्टुम्’/’अपाकर्ष्टुम्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-39 कृन्मेजन्तः।

    5. Which सूत्रम् justifies the use of the affix तुमुँन् in the form कर्तुम् used in the verse?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-10 तुमुन्ण्वुलौ क्रियायां क्रियार्थायाम्‌ justifies the use of the affix तुमुँन् in the form कर्तुम् – derived from the verbal root √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०) as follows –

By 3-3-10 तुमुन्ण्वुलौ क्रियायां क्रियार्थायाम्‌ – The affix तुमुँन् as well as ण्वुल् may be used following a verbal root to denote a future action when in conjunction with another action intended for the future action. In the present example, the action ययाचे is intended for the future action कर्तुम्।
Note: Here 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix तुम् from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
‘कर्तुम्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च and the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-39 कृन्मेजन्तः।

    Answer: The सूत्रम् 7-1-18 औङ आपः has been used in the form पादुके (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘पादुका’, द्वितीया-द्विवचनम्)।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
By 7-1-18 औङ आपः – The affixes ‘औ’ and ‘औट्’ get ‘शी’ as a substitute when they follow a base ending in a ‘आप्’ affix.
By 6-1-87 आद्‌गुणः।

    2. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the substitution ‘ए’ in ययाचे?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे prescribes the substitution ‘ए’ in ययाचे – derived from the verbal root √याच् (टुयाचृँ याच्ञायाम् १. १००१) as follows –

By 3-2-115 परोक्षे लिँट्।
By 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे – The टि-भागः of a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has the letter ‘ट्’ as a इत्), gets the letter ‘ए’ as the replacement. Note: The टि-सञ्ज्ञा is defined by 1-1-64 अचोऽन्त्यादि टि।
By 6-1-8 लिटि धातोरनभ्यासस्य।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
