Translation – Can those blessed days be (in store) for me, when the fearless old stags rub their bodies against mine while I, having fixed myself in the Padmāsana posture on a slab in the Himalayas on the bank of the Ganges, attain yogic sleep by constantly meditating on the Supreme Reality?

Note: This verse has also been previously posted in the following post – कण्डूयन्ते-3ap-लँट्

The form तटम् is derived from the पुंलिङ्ग/स्त्रीलिङ्ग/नपुंसकलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘तट’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। By 2-3-46 प्रातिपदिकार्थलिङ्गपरिमाणवचनमात्रे प्रथमा – A first case affix (‘सुँ’, ‘औ’, ‘जस्’) is used to denote (i) only the meaning of the प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) or (ii) only the additional sense of gender or (iii) only the additional sense of measure or (iv) only number.

By 7-1-24 अतोऽम् – The affixes ‘सुँ’ and ‘अम्’ that follow a neuter अङ्गम् ending in the short vowel ‘अ’ take ‘अम्’ as their replacement. 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘म्’ of ‘अम्’ from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 6-1-107 अमि पूर्वः – In place of a preceding अक् letter and the following vowel (अच्) belonging to the affix ‘अम्’ there is a single substitute of that preceding अक् letter.

  1. 1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 2-3-46 प्रातिपदिकार्थलिङ्गपरिमाणवचनमात्रे प्रथमा (used in step 1) the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – अलिङ्गा नियतलिङ्गाश्च प्रातिपदिकार्थमात्र इत्यस्योदाहरणम्। Please explain.
Those प्रातिपदिकानि (nominal stems) which have no gender or have a fixed gender are examples of प्रातिपदिकार्थमात्रे (denoting only the meaning of the nominal stem.)
Those प्रातिपदिकानि (nominal stems) which have no fixed gender are examples of लिङ्गमात्राधिक्‍ये (denoting only the additional sense of gender.)

    2. In the quotation – ‘कुलं रोधश्च तीरं च प्रतीरं च तटं त्रिषु’ – from the अमर-कोष: given in the commentary, what does त्रिषु mean?
Answer: त्रिषु means त्रिषु लिङ्गेषु – in all three genders. Hence तटं त्रिषु means that the प्रातिपदिकम् (nominal stem) ‘तट’ is used in all three genders in the language.

    3. Which कृत् affix is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अभ्यसन’? Which one is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अभ्यास’? Which one is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विधि’?
    Answer: The कृत् affix ल्युट्‌ is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अभ्यसन’ – derived from the verbal root √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४. १०६) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘अभि’।
By 3-3-115 ल्युट् च – (In addition to the affix ‘क्त’ prescribed by the prior सूत्रम् 3-3-114) the affix ल्युट् may also be used following a verbal root to denote in the neuter gender the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state.
By 7-1-1 युवोरनाकौ, 1-1-55 अनेकाल्शित्सर्वस्य।
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि। ‘अभ्यसन’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

    The कृत् affix ‘घञ्’ is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अभ्यास’ – derived from the verbal root √अस् (असुँ क्षेपणे ४. १०६) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘अभि’।
By 3-3-18 भावे – The affix घञ् may be used following a verbal root to denote the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state.
By 7-2-116 अत उपधायाः।
By 6-1-77 इको यणचि। ‘अभ्यास’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।
Note: घञबन्त: (लिङ्गानुशासनम् २.२) – A प्रातिपदिकम् ending in the affix ‘घञ्’ or ‘अप्’ is used in the masculine gender.

    The कृत् affix ‘कि’ is used to form the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विधि’ – derived from the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके #३. ११) preceded by the उपसर्गः ‘वि’।
Please refer to the answer to question 4 in the following comment for derivation of the

    4. In the form गतस्य (used in the verse) the affix ‘क्त’ has been used –
    (i) कर्तरि
    (ii) कर्मणि
    (iii) भावे
    (iv) None of the above
Answer: i) कर्तरि – The affix ‘क्त’ has been used कर्तरि in the form गतस्य as per the सूत्रम् 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च – When following one of the verbal roots listed below, the affix ‘क्त’ may be used in the active voice (कर्तरि) as well as in the passive voice (भावकर्मणो:) –
    (i) any verbal root used in the sense of motion (गत्यर्थ:)
(ii) any verbal root used intransitively (अकर्मक:)
    (iii) the verbal roots √श्लिष् (श्लिषँ आलिङ्गने ४.

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गत’ is derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ११३७) as follows:
By 3-2-102 निष्ठा। Note: The affix ‘क्त’ has been used कर्तरि (to denote the agent of the action) here as per 3-4-72 गत्यर्थाकर्मकश्लिषशीङ्स्थासवसजनरुहजीर्यतिभ्यश्च।
Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ prevents the affix ‘त’ from taking the augment ‘इट्’ which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
By 7-1-12 टाङसिङसामिनात्स्याः।

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Śrī Kṛṣṇa sported with the gopīs on the bank of the Yamunā.”

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“There are many beautiful trees on the bank of this river.”

    Easy questions:

    1. Which सूत्रम् prescribes the augment याट् in the form गङ्गायाः used in the commentary?
    Answer : The augment ‘याट्’ in the form गङ्गायाः (स्त्रीलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘गङ्गा’, षष्ठी-एकवचनम्) is prescribed by the सूत्रम् 7-3-113 याडापः।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा……….।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘ङस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 7-3-113 याडापः – The ‘ङित्’ (having the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्) affixes following a base ending in a ‘आप्’ affix get the augment ‘याट्’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the augment ‘याट्’ attaches to the beginning of the affix ‘अस्’।

    2. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण्नित्यम् been used in the commentary?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण्नित्यम् has been used in the सन्धि-कार्यम् between सन् + अहम् = सन्नहम् ।

As per 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम्, ‘सन्’ has the पद-सञ्ज्ञा। This allows 8-3-32 to apply in the next step.
By 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण् नित्यम् – When there is a ङम् letter (in this case the letter ‘न्’) at the end of a पदम् and this ङम् letter is preceded by a short vowel (in this case the letter ‘अ’), then the following vowel (long or short – in this case the letter ‘अ’ at the beginning of अहम्) always gets the augment ङमुँट् (in this case नुँट्)। Note: ङम् stands for the प्रत्याहार: ‘ङम्’ which includes the letters ‘ङ्’, ‘ण्’ and ‘न्’। As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the augment नुँट् joins at the beginning of the letter ‘अ’।
