Gita Press translation – “That monarch, O king, who is well-versed in the (fourteen) sciences and follows the path of prudence enjoys sovereignty for a long time and brings his enemies under subjection (7). Concluding peace or contending with his enemies as occasion demands, and strengthening his own party, a ruler enjoys great power (8). Peace should be concluded by a ruler who is ruling strength as well as by him who is equally matched (in strength with his enemy). He should in no case under-rate his enemy and should wage war (against him) if he is superior (in strength to his enemy) (9). Therefore, O Rāvaṇa alliance with Rāma finds favor with me. Let Sītā, for whose sake you have been attacked (by him), be restored to him (10). Celestial sages as well as Gandharvas (heavenly musicians) all wish him victory. (Therefore) do not antagonize him; let an alliance with him find favor with you (11).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सन्धि/संधि’ is derived from the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११) with the उपसर्ग: ‘सम्’।

The “डु” at the beginning of this धातुः gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-5 आदिर्ञिटुडवः। The ञकारः at the end gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्। Both take लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

By 3-3-92 उपसर्गे घोः किः – Following a verbal root which has the designation ‘घु’ (ref. 1-1-20 दाधा घ्वदाप्) and is in conjunction with a उपसर्ग:, the affix ‘कि’ may be used to denote either (i) the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state or (ii) any कारक: except the agent of the action, provided the word so derived is a proper name.

By 6-4-64 आतो लोप इटि च – The ending आकार: of an अङ्गम् takes लोप: when followed by a vowel-beginning आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: that has either:
(i) a “इट्”-आगम: or
(ii) a ककार: or ङकार: as an इत्।

By 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः

By 8-4-59 वा पदान्तस्य

‘सन्धि/संधि’ gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च – A word form that ends in a कृत्-प्रत्ययः or a तद्धित-प्रत्ययः and so also compounds gets the name प्रातिपदिकम्।

Note: Words ending in the affix ‘कि’ derived using the सूत्रम् 3-3-92 are used in the masculine gender. The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-3-92 उपसर्गे घोः किः been used in the last twenty verses of Chapter Two of the गीता?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-3-92 उपसर्गे घोः किः has been used in the form समाधौ (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘समाधि’, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) in the following verse of Chapter Two of the गीता –

    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘समाधि’ is derived from the verbal root √धा (डुधाञ् धारणपोषणयोः | दान इत्यप्येके ३. ११) with the उपसर्गौ ‘सम्’ and ‘आङ्’।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌। ‘समाधि’ has the घि-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-7 शेषो घ्यसखि।
By 7-3-119 अच्च घे:।
By 6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि।

    2. Commenting on the affix ‘कि’ (used in step 1) the काशिका says – कित्करणमातो लोपार्थम्। Please explain.
Answer: The purpose of having the letter ‘क्’ as a इत् in the affix ‘कि’ is to facilitate the elision of the ending letter ‘आ’ (of the अङ्गम्) prescribed by the सूत्रम् 6-4-64 आतो लोप इटि च – The ending letter ‘आ’ of an अङ्गम् is elided when followed by a vowel-beginning affix that has the designation आर्धधातुकम् and has either:
    (i) the augment ‘इट्’ or
    (ii) the letter ‘क्’ or ‘ङ्’ as a इत्

    3. Can you spot the affix ‘णिनिँ’ in the verses?
    Answer: The affix ‘णिनिँ’ is used in the form जयैषिणः (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जयैषिन्’, पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्)।

    The कृदन्त-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘एषिन्’ is derived from the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ७८).
The (compound) प्रातिपदिकम् ‘जयैषिन्’ is derived as follows –

By 3-2-78 सुप्यजातौ णिनिस्ताच्छील्ये – When in composition with a सुबन्तं पदम् (a पदम् which ends in a सुँप् affix) which does not denote a class/genus, a verbal root may take the affix ‘णिनिँ’ to express the meaning of a habitual/natural action.
Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-78, the term सुपि ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence ‘जय ङस्’ gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 तत्रोपपदं सप्तमीस्थम्‌।
By 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।

We form a compound between ‘जय ङस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) and ‘एषिन्’ by using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ्। In the सूत्रम् 2-2-19 उपपदमतिङ् (which prescribes the compounding) the term उपपदम् ends in the nominative case. Hence ‘जय ङस्’ (which is the उपपदम्) gets the designation उपसर्जनम्‌ by 1-2-43 प्रथमानिर्दिष्टं समास उपसर्जनम्। In the compound, ‘जय ङस्’ is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 उपसर्जनं पूर्वम्‌।
By 2-4-71 सुपो धातुप्रातिपदिकयोः।
By 6-1-88 वृद्धिरेचि।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा…।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending letter ‘स्’ of ‘जस्’ from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 8-4-2 अट्कुप्वाङ्नुम्व्यवायेऽपि।

    4. Which वार्तिकम् prescribes the affix अप् in the form वशे?
    Answer: The वार्तिकम् (under 3-3-58 ग्रहवृदृनिश्चिगमश्च) वशिरण्योरुपसङ्ख्यानम् prescribes the affix ‘अप्’ in the form वशे (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वश’, सप्तमी-एकवचनम्)।

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वश’ is derived from the verbal root √वश् (वशँ कान्तौ २. ७५) as follows:
By वार्तिकम् (under 3-3-58 ग्रहवृदृनिश्चिगमश्च) वशिरण्योरुपसङ्ख्यानम् – The two verbal roots √वश् (वशँ कान्तौ २. ५१३) should be listed (included) among those verbal roots (given in 3-3-58 ग्रहवृदृनिश्चिगमश्च) which take the affix अप्।
Note: घञि प्राप्ते वचनम् – In the absence of this वार्तिकम् the affix घञ् would have applied here (giving undesirable forms.)

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु has been used in the form मा गमः derived from the verbal root √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १.

By 3-3-175 माङि लुङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च।
By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि।
By 3-1-55 पुषादिद्युताद्यॢदितः परस्मैपदेषु – When a परस्मैपदम् affix follows, the affix ‘च्लि’ is replaced by ‘अङ्’ when following either –
    i) a verbal root from the section beginning with √पुष् (पुषँ पुष्टौ ४. ७९) up to the end of the दिवादि-गणः। or
    ii) a verbal root from the section beginning with √द्युत् (द्युतँ दीप्तौ १. or
iii) a verbal root which is ऌदित् (which has the letter ‘ऌ’ as a इत्)।
Note: By 6-4-74 न माङ्योगे – When used in connection with माङ्, a base (अङ्गम्) does not take the augment अट् or आट्।

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Śrī Rāma made an alliance with Sugrīva.”
