वेपथुः mNs

Today we will look at the form वेपथुः mNs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 3.19.23.

Gita Press translation – That very moment, all of a sudden, a shudder ran through the heart of Diti (Hiraṇyākṣa’s mother) as she recalled the words of her lord (the sage Kaśyapa); and blood flowed from her breasts (23). When he saw his magic forces dispelled, he went into the presence of Lord Keśava once more and, full of rage, encompassed Him with his arms (in order to crush Him; but to his great amazement and chagrin) he found the Lord standing outside the circle of his arms (24). As he (now) began to strike the Lord with his fists, which were harder than adamant, Lord Adhokṣaja (who is beyond sense-perception) slapped him in the root of his ear, even as Indra (the lord of the Maruts or gods of winds) hit the demon Vṛtra (son of Twaṣṭā, the architect of gods) (25).

The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘वेपथु’ is derived from the verbal root √वेप् (टुवेपृँ कम्पने १.

In the verbal root ‘टुवेपृँ’ the beginning ‘टु’ is a इत् by 1-3-5 आदिर्ञिटुडवः and the ending ‘ऋ’ is a इत् by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्। Both take लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

By 3-3-89 ट्वितोऽथुच् – To denote the sense of the verbal root as having attained to a completed state, the affix ‘अथुच्’ may be used following a verbal root which is marked with ‘टु’।

Note: Words derived by using the affix अथुच् are used in the masculine gender in the language.

The विवक्षा here is प्रथमा-एकवचनम्

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्

Questions:

1. Where has वेपथु: been used in the गीता?

2. The वृत्ति: of the सूत्रम् 3-3-89 ट्वितोऽथुच् (used in step 1) in the काशिका says – टु इद् यस्य, तस्माट् ट्वितो धातोरथुच् प्रत्ययो भवति भावादौ। But the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – अयमपि स्वभावाद् भाव एव। Please explain.

3. Why doesn’t the affix ‘क्त’ take the augment ‘इट्’ in the form ‘नष्ट’ (used in विनष्टासु)?

4. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-98 गमहनजनखनघसां लोपः क्ङित्यनङि been used in the verses?

5. Which सूत्रम् is used for the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सार’ used in वज्रसारै:?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“When Mārīca heard the word ‘Rāma’ a tremor arose in his body.” Use the verbal root √जन् (जनीँ प्रादुर्भावे ४. ४४) for ‘to arise.’

Easy questions:

1. The form अहन् used in the verses is derived from the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २). Here it is लँङ्, प्रथम-पुरुष:, एकवचनम्। Which other combination of पुरुष:/वचनम् has the same form अहन्?

2. Where has the pronoun प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अदस्’ been used in the verses?

  1. 1. Where has वेपथु: been used in the गीता?
Answer: वेपथु: has been used in the following verse in the गीता –

    2. The वृत्ति: of the सूत्रम् 3-3-89 ट्वितोऽथुच् (used in step 1) in the काशिका says – टु इद् यस्य, तस्माट् ट्वितो धातोरथुच् प्रत्ययो भवति भावादौ। But the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – अयमपि स्वभावाद् भाव एव। Please explain.
Answer: The अनुवृत्तिः of 3-3-18 भावे as well as 3-3-19 अकर्तरि च कारके संज्ञायाम् is coming down in to the सूत्रम् 3-3-89 ट्वितोऽथुच्। But the nature (स्वभाव:) of the affix अथुच् prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-3-89 ट्वितोऽथुच् is such that it is used in the language in the sense of भावे only and not अकर्तरि च कारके संज्ञायाम्। The same is true of the affix ‘क्त्रि’ (prescribed by the prior सूत्रम् 3-3-88 ड्वितः क्त्रिः।)

    3. Why doesn’t the affix ‘क्त’ take the augment ‘इट्’ in the form ‘नष्ट’ (used in विनष्टासु)?
    Answer: The निष्ठा affix ‘क्त’ is prevented from taking the augment ‘इट्’ in the form ‘नष्ट’ (feminine ‘नष्टा’) as per the सूत्रम् 7-2-15 यस्य विभाषा – If a verbal root optionally allows an augment इट् in some case, then following that verbal root a निष्ठा affix (ref. 1-1-26) is prohibited from taking the augment इट्। Note: 7-2-15 applies here because as per 7-2-45 रधादिभ्यश्च – A आर्धधातुकम् affix beginning with a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः optionally gets the augment इट् when following the verbal root √रध् (रधँ हिंसासंराद्ध्योः ४.

The derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘नष्ट’ is shown in the following post – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/12/03/नष्टाः-mnp/

    4. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-98 गमहनजनखनघसां लोपः क्ङित्यनङि been used in the verses?
    Answer: The सूत्रम् 6-4-98 गमहनजनखनघसां लोपः क्ङित्यनङि has been used in the form विनिघ्नन्तम् (प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विनिघ्नत्’, पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।
    The प्रातिपदिकम् ‘विनिघ्नत्’ is derived from the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) preceded by the उपसर्गौ ‘वि’ and नि’।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-2-124 लटः शतृशानचावप्रथमासमानाधिकरणे। Note: Since the verbal root √हन् has no indications for bringing in a आत्मनेपदम् affix it takes a परस्मैपदम् affix by default as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्। As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, ‘शतृँ’ has the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। Therefore the verbal root √हन् takes the affix ‘शतृँ’ (and not ‘शानच्’) here. Note: The affix ‘शतृँ’ has the designation सार्वधातुकम् as per 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्। And since it does not have the letter ‘प्’ as a इत्, it is ङिद्वत् (as if it has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्) as per 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्। This allows 6-4-98 to apply below.
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
By 6-4-98 गमहनजनखनघसां लोपः क्ङित्यनङि – The उपधा (penultimate letter – ref. 1-1-65) of the verbal roots √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १. ८१२) is elided, when followed by an अजादि-प्रत्ययः (an affix beginning with a vowel) which is a कित् (has the letter ‘क्’ as a इत्) or a ङित् (has the letter ‘ङ्’ as a इत्) with the exclusion of the affix अङ्।
‘विनिघ्नत्’ gets the प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च।

The derivation of the form विनिघ्नन्तम् from the प्रातिपादिकम् ‘विनिघ्नत्’ is similar to the derivation of अजानन्तम् from the प्रातिपादिकम् ‘अजानत्’ shown in the following post – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2011/02/10/अजानन्तम्-mas/

    5. Which सूत्रम् is used for the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सार’ used in वज्रसारै:?
    Answer: The affix घञ् prescribed by the सूत्रम् 3-3-17 सृ स्थिरे is used for the derivation of the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘सार’ from the verbal root √सृ (सृ गतौ १.
Please see the following post for derivation of the

    Answer: The form अहन् can also stand for लँङ्, कर्तरि प्रयोगः, मध्यम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ्।
By 3-4-100 इतश्च।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शप:।
By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः।

    2. Where has the pronoun प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अदस्’ been used in the verses?
Answer: The सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् ‘अदस्’ has been used in the form अमुम् (पुंलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम्)।

Please see answer to easy question 1 in the following comment for derivation of the form अमुम् – http://avg-sanskrit.org/2012/10/09/कृतज्ञः-mns/#comment-5170
