निविशन्ति 3Ap-लँट्

Today we will look at the form निविशन्ति 3Ap-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb5.26.37

Gita Press translation – There are hundreds and thousands of such infernal spots in the abode of Yama; and all those treading the path of unrighteousness – whosoever have been spoken of here as well as those that have been left unmentioned – enter all these spots one after another, O ruler of the earth. And even so those following the path of virtue enter other regions (heaven etc.); and with the residue of both virtue and sin (when the fruit of the bulk of their stock has been reaped) they both (the virtuous as well as the sinful) return to this land of Bhāratavarṣa (the land of rebirth) (37).

निविशन्ति is derived from the verbal root √विश् (तुदादि-गणः, विशँ प्रवेशने, धातु-पाठः # ६. १६०).

In the धातु-पाठः, “विशँ” has one इत् letter – the अकार: following the शकार:। This इत् letter has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus √विश् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore in कर्तरि प्रयोगः, √विश् normally takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययाः as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्। But in this verse since the उपसर्गः “नि” has been prefixed, the use of परस्मैपदम् in the form निविशन्ति cannot be grammatically justified. Please see question 2.

The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।

(1) विश् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

(2) विश् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) विश् + झि । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्

(4) विश् + श + झि । By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः, the श-प्रत्यय: is placed after the verbal roots of the तुदादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌

(5) विश् + अ + झि । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते , 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। See easy question 1.

(6) विश् + अ + अन्ति । By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः, “अन्त्” comes in as a replacement for the झकारः of a प्रत्यय:।

(7) विशन्ति । By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे

“नि” is the उपसर्गः (ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे, 1-4-80 ते प्राग्धातोः।)
नि + विशन्ति = निविशन्ति।

Questions:

1. In the गीता can you spot a आर्ष-प्रयोगः in which the verbal root √विश् (विशँ प्रवेशने ६. १६०) has been used in a तिङन्तं पदम्?

2. Which सूत्रम् mandates the use of आत्मनेपदम् in this example?

3. Commenting on this सूत्रम् (answer to question 2), the तत्त्वबोधिनी says नेः किम्? प्रविशति। Please explain.

4. Commenting on this सूत्रम्  (answer to question 2), the काशिका says नेरुपसर्गस्य ग्रहणम् ‘अर्थवद्ग्रहणे नानर्थकस्य’ इति। तस्मादिह न भवति – मधुनि विशन्ति भ्रमराः। Please explain.

5. Can you spot a अकार-लोपः in the verses?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Let us camp on the bank of this river.” Use the verbal root √विश् (विशँ प्रवेशने ६. १६०) with the उपसर्गः “नि” for “to camp.”

Easy Questions:

1. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च apply after step 5 in the example?

2. In the commentary can you spot a प्रातिपदिकम् which is always used in the dual number?

  1. 1. In the गीता can you spot a आर्ष-प्रयोगः in which the verbal root √विश् (विशँ प्रवेशने ६. १६०) has been used in a तिङन्तं पदम्?
    Answer: The form विशते in verse 55 of Chapter 18 is a आर्ष-प्रयोगः। As per 1-3-17 नेर्विशः – When preceded by the उपसर्गः “नि”, the verbal root √विश् (विशँ प्रवेशने ६. १६०) takes a आत्मनेपदम् affix (and not the default परस्मैपदम् by 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्।) Here in विशते the verbal root √विश् (विशँ प्रवेशने ६. १६०) has been used with a आत्मनेपदम् affix even though it is not preceded by the उपसर्गः “नि”। The grammatically correct form is विशति।
    भक्त्या मामभिजानाति यावान्यश्चास्मि तत्त्वतः ।
    ततो मां तत्त्वतो ज्ञात्वा विशते तदनन्तरम्‌ ॥ 18-55 ॥

    2. Which सूत्रम् mandates the use of आत्मनेपदम् in this example?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 1-3-17 नेर्विशः mandates the use of आत्मनेपदम् in this example since the verbal root √विश् (विशँ प्रवेशने ६. १६०) is preceded by the उपसर्गः “नि”।

    3. Commenting on this सूत्रम् (answer to question 2), the तत्त्वबोधिनी says नेः किम्? प्रविशति। Please explain.
Answer: In the form प्रविशति, the verbal root √विश् (विशँ प्रवेशने ६. १६०) is preceded by the उपसर्गः “प्र” and not by the उपसर्गः “नि”। Hence 1-3-17 नेर्विशः does not apply. The default परस्मैपदम् affix is used as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्।

    4. Commenting on this सूत्रम्  (answer to question 2), the काशिका says नेरुपसर्गस्य ग्रहणम् ‘अर्थवद्ग्रहणे नानर्थकस्य’ इति। तस्मादिह न भवति – मधुनि विशन्ति भ्रमराः। Please explain.
Answer: नेरुपसर्गस्य ग्रहणम् means – The “नि” specified in the सू्त्रम् 1-3-17 नेर्विशः is to be understood to refer to the उपसर्गः “नि” only and not to any other “नि”। We arrive at this inference by the परिभाषा ‘अर्थवद्ग्रहणे नानर्थकस्य’ – a combination of letters capable of expressing a meaning denotes, whenever it is employed in grammar that combination of letters in so far it possesses that meaning, but it does not denote the same combination of letters void of a meaning.
    In the sentence मधुनि विशन्ति भ्रमराः – the verbal root √विश् (विशँ प्रवेशने ६. १६०) is following the “नि” of मधुनि which by itself has no meaning. Therefore √विश् does not take आत्मनेपदम् as per 1-3-17 नेर्विशः।

    5. Can you spot a अकार-लोपः in the verses?
Answer: A अकार-लोपः can be seen in the form in the form सन्ति derived from √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०).

    The विवक्षा is लँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, बहुवचनम्।
    अस् + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
    = अस् + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    = अस् + झि । By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्, 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्।
    = अस् + शप् + झि । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्।
    = अस् + झि । By 2-4-72 अदिप्रभृतिभ्यः शपः।
    = अस् + अन्ति । By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः।
    = सन्ति । By 6-4-111 श्नसोरल्लोपः – The अकारः of “श्न” and of the verbal root √अस् (असँ भुवि २. ६०) is elided when followed by सार्वाधातुक-प्रत्ययः which is a कित् or a ङित्।
    Note: Since the सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: “अन्ति” is अपित्, by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् it behaves ङिद्वत् – as if it has ङकार: as a इत्। This allows 6-4-111 to apply.

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Let us camp on the bank of this river.” Use the verbal root √विश् (विशँ प्रवेशने ६. १६०) with the उपसर्गः “नि” for “to camp.”
    Answer: एतस्याः/अस्याः नद्याः तीरे निविशामहै = एतस्या/अस्या नद्यास्तीरे निविशामहै।

    Easy Questions:

    1. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च apply after step 5 in the example?
    Answer: The affix “श” is ङिद्वत् by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्। Therefore, 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops the गुणादेशः which would have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च ।

    2. In the commentary can you spot a प्रातिपदिकम् which is always used in the dual number?
Answer: A सर्वनाम-प्रातिपदिकम् which is always used in the dual number is “उभ” (used in उभयोः, पुंलिङ्गे षष्ठी-द्विवचनम्।)

    उभ + ओस् । By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा.. । 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “ओस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
    = उभे + ओस् । By 7-3-104 ओसि च – The ending अकार: of a अङ्गम् is replaced by एकार: when followed by the affix “ओस्”।
    = उभयोस् । By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।
    = उभयोः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः।
