Today we will look at the form निविशन्ति 3Ap-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb5.26.37

Gita Press translation – There are hundreds and thousands of such infernal spots in the abode of Yama; and all those treading the path of unrighteousness – whosoever have been spoken of here as well as those that have been left unmentioned – enter all these spots one after another, O ruler of the earth. And even so those following the path of virtue enter other regions (heaven etc.); and with the residue of both virtue and sin (when the fruit of the bulk of their stock has been reaped) they both (the virtuous as well as the sinful) return to this land of Bhāratavarṣa (the land of rebirth) (37).

निविशन्ति is derived from the verbal root √विश् (तुदादि-गणः, विशँ प्रवेशने, धातु-पाठः # ६.

In the धातु-पाठः, “विशँ” has one इत् letter – the अकार: following the शकार:। This इत् letter has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus √विश् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore in कर्तरि प्रयोगः, √विश् normally takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययाः as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्। But in this verse since the उपसर्गः “नि” has been prefixed, the use of परस्मैपदम् in the form निविशन्ति cannot be grammatically justified. Please see question 2.

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

By 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ्

By 3-1-77 तुदादिभ्यः शः, the श-प्रत्यय: is placed after the verbal roots of the तुदादि-गणः, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: (exception) to 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌

See easy question 1.

By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः, “अन्त्” comes in as a replacement for the झकारः of a प्रत्यय:।

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे

“नि” is the उपसर्गः (ref.

Questions:

3. Commenting on this सूत्रम् (answer to question 2), the तत्त्वबोधिनी says नेः किम्? Please explain.

4. Commenting on this सूत्रम्  (answer to question 2), the काशिका says नेरुपसर्गस्य ग्रहणम् ‘अर्थवद्ग्रहणे नानर्थकस्य’ इति। Please explain.

5. Can you spot a अकार-लोपः in the verses?

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
