Translation – Can those blessed days be (in store) for me, when the fearless old stags rub their bodies against mine while I, having fixed myself in the Padmāsana posture on a slab in the Himalayas on the bank of the Ganges, attain yogic sleep by constantly meditating on the Supreme Reality?

कण्डूयन्ते is derived from the verbal root √कण्डू (कण्डूञ् गात्रविघर्षणे, कण्ड्वादि-गणः)। The ञकारः at the end of “कण्डूञ्” gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

First we derive the धातुः “कण्डूय” as follows:

(1) कण्डू + यक् । By 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक् – The affix यक् is always used after the verbal roots in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः (group of terms headed by “कण्डूञ्”) with no change in their meaning. Note: The terms in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः are considered to be verbal roots as well as nominal stems. When they are used as verbal roots 3-1-27 applies. See questions 2 and 3.
Note: यक् is a कित्।

Now “कण्डूय” gets धातु-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-1-32 सनाद्यन्ता धातवः

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

By 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे, the टि-भागः of a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has टकार: as a इत्), gets एकारः as the replacement.

By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent.

By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः, “अन्त्” comes in as a replacement for the झकारः of a प्रत्यय:।

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे (applied twice.)

Questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक् (used in step 1) been used in the last fifteen verses of Chapter Eighteen of the गीता?

2. The terms in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः are considered to be verbal roots as well as nominal stems. How do we deduce that they are verbal roots? The महाभाष्यम् answers as follows: धातुप्रकरणाद्धातुः कस्य चासञ्जनादपि । Please explain.

3. How do we deduce that the terms in the कण्ड्वादि-गणः are also considered to be nominal stems? The महाभाष्यम् answers as follows: आह चायमिमं दीर्घं मन्ये धातुर्विभाषितः ॥ Please explain.

4. The वृत्तिः of the सूत्रम् 3-1-27 कण्ड्वादिभ्यो यक् in the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी is as follows एभ्यो धातुभ्यो नित्यं यक् स्यात् स्वार्थे। Commenting on the use of धातुभ्यः in the वृत्तिः the कौमुदी explains धातुभ्यः किम्? Please explain.

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Do not rub your dirty hands on the wall.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “मलिन” for “dirty” and the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “कुड्य” for “wall.”

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“A king is honored only in his (own) kingdom, while a scholar is honored everywhere.” Use the verbal root √मही (महीङ् पूजायाम्, कण्ड्वादि-गणः) for “to be honored.” Use the अव्ययम् “तु” for “while (but)” and the अव्ययम् “सर्वत्र” for “everywhere.”

Easy Questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-3-111 घेर्ङिति been used in the commentary?

2. Why doesn’t the सूत्रम् 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः apply in the form ब्रह्मणः (प्रातिपदिकम् “ब्रह्मन्”, नपुंसकलिङ्गे षष्ठी-एकवचनम्)।
