Today we will look at the form तितरिषन्ति 3Ap-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 4.22.39.

GitaPress translation – Resort (then) as your (sole) refuge to Lord Vāsudeva, by fixing the thought on the splendor of the very toes of whose lotus-feet pious souls cut asunder the knot of egotism (which us nothing but a conglomerate of tendencies to action) formed (by Karmas themselves), in a manner that even recluses who have emptied their mind (of all thoughts of the world), having withdrawn their senses (from their objects) are not able to do (39). Great agony is experienced in crossing the ocean of metempsychosis – which is infested with (fierce) crocodiles in the shape of the five senses and the mind – by those who have not found their boat in God, inasmuch as they seek to reach the other end of it by painful means (such as the practice of Yoga.) Therefore, you make the adorable feet of Lord Śrī Hari your boat and cross the ocean of misery, which is so difficult to cross (40).

तितरिष is a desiderative form derived from the धातुः √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १.

As per 3-1-7 धातोः कर्मणः समानकर्तृकादिच्छायां वा – In order to express wish/desire, the affix सन् is optionally prescribed after a verbal root which underlies the object of and shares the same agent with the verbal root √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६.

By 7-2-41 इट् सनि वा – The affix सन् optionally takes the augment इट् when it follows the verbal root √वृ (वृङ् सम्भक्तौ ९. ८) or any verbal root ending in a ॠकार: (in उपदेशः।) As per 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the आगम: “इट्” joins at the beginning of the प्रत्यय: “स”। See question 2.

Note: 1-2-9 इको झल् does not apply because the affix “इस” does not begin with a झल् letter.

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows. By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (“अ”, “इ”, “उ”) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a “रँ” (“र्”, “ल्”) letter.

By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः – There is reduplication of the first portion – containing a single vowel – of a verbal root ending in the affix “सन्”/”यङ्” which is not already reduplicated. But if the verbal root (that has more than one vowel) begins with a vowel, then the reduplication is of the second portion – containing a single vowel.

By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः – Of the consonants of a reduplicate (अभ्यासः – ref. 6-1-4 पूर्वोऽभ्यासः), only the one (if any) at the beginning is retained, the rest are elided.

By 7-4-79 सन्यतः – When the affix “सन्” follows, a अकारः belonging to a reduplicate (अभ्यासः) is replaced by a इकारः।

By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:, the letter “स्” is replaced by the cerebral “ष्” when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (“क्”, “ख्”, “ग्”, “घ्”, “ङ्”)। This substitution only takes place if the “स्” is an आदेश: (substitute) or part of a प्रत्यय: (affix.)

In the धातु-पाठः, √तॄ has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, √तॄ takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. Hence the सन्नन्त-धातुः “तितरिष” also takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: as per 1-3-62 पूर्ववत् सनः – A सन्नन्त-धातुः (verbal root ending in the affix “सन्”) takes a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यय: in the same manner as the verbal root to which the affix सन् is added.
Note: This implies that if the धातु: to which the affix सन् is added is आत्मनेपदी/परस्मैपदी/उभयपदी then the सन्नन्त-धातुः is correspondingly आत्मनेपदी/परस्मैपदी/उभयपदी।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates “झि” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent.

By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः, “अन्त्” comes in as a replacement for the झकारः of a प्रत्यय:।

। By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे (applied twice.)

  1. 1. Where has the verbal root √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १. ११२४) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् for the last time in the गीता?
Answer: The verbal root √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १. ११२४) has been used in the form तरिष्यसि

    The विवक्षा here is लृँट्, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, मध्यम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।
By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।

    2. What would be the optional final form in this example in the case when the augment इट् (prescribed optionally by 7-2-41 इट् सनि वा) is not used?
Answer: The optional form when the augment इट् (prescribed optionally by 7-2-41 इट् सनि वा) is not used would be तितीर्षन्ति।

The सन्नन्त-धातुः “तितीर्ष” is derived as follows:
    Note: The affix “स” is a कित् here by 1-2-9 इको झल्। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying.
Since the augment इट् prescribed optionally by 7-2-41 इट् सनि वा is not used, 1-2-9 इको झल् applies here because the affix “स” begins with a झल् letter.
By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 8-2-77 हलि च।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।

The form तितीर्षन्ति is derived from “तितीर्ष” similar to तितरिषन्ति in the example.

    3. What would be the optional final form in this example in the case when the elongation (prescribed optionally by 7-2-38 वॄतो वा) of the augment इट् is done?
Answer: The optional final form in this example when the elongation (prescribed optionally by 7-2-38 वॄतो वा) of the augment इट् is done would be तितरीषन्ति।

The सन्नन्त-धातुः “तितरीष” is derived as follows:
Note: 1-2-9 इको झल् does not apply because the affix “इस” does not begin with a झल् letter.
By 7-2-38 वॄतो वा – As long as a लिँट् affix doesn’t follow, the augment इट् is optionally elongated when it follows the verbal root √वृ (वृङ् सम्भक्तौ ९. ८) or any verbal root ending in a ॠकार:।
By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 7-4-79 सन्यतः।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।

The form तितरीषन्ति is derived from “तितरीष” similar to तितरिषन्ति in the example.

    4. Where else (besides in तितरिषन्ति) has the verbal root √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १. ११२४) been used in a तिङन्तं पदम् in the verses?
Answer: The verbal root √तॄ (तॄ प्लवनतरणयोः १. ११२४) has been used in the form उत्तर।

By 3-3-162 लोट् च।

By 6-4-105 अतो हेः।

    “उद्” is the उपसर्गः (ref.
By 8-4-55 खरि च।

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Śrī Hanumān wanted to cross the ocean.”

    Advanced Question:

    1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 7-2-41 इट् सनि वा (used in this example) the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – चिकीर्षतीत्यादौ ‘अज्झनगमाम्’ – इति दीर्घे कृते नेदं प्रवर्तते। Please explain.
    Answer: The form चिकीर्षति is a desiderative form derived from √कृ (डुकृञ् करणे ८. १०).

The सन्नन्त-धातुः “चिकीर्ष” is derived as follows:
By 6-4-16 अज्झनगमां सनि – When the affix सन् beginning with a झल् letter follows, there is an elongation of a verbal root which ends in a vowel, as well as of the verbal root √हन् (हनँ हिंसागत्योः २. २) and √गम् (“गम्”-आदेशः which comes in place of √इ (इङ् अध्ययने | नित्यमधिपूर्वः २. ४१) by 2-4-48 इङश्च).
    Note: The affix “स” is a कित् here by 1-2-9 इको झल्। Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः from applying.

    Note: After the दीर्घादेशः by 6-4-16 we have a ॠकारान्त-धातुः। As per 7-2-41 इट् सनि वा – The affix सन् optionally takes the augment इट् when it follows the verbal root √वृ (वृङ् सम्भक्तौ ९. ८) or any verbal root ending in a ॠकार: (in उपदेशः।) But since in the उपदेशः (धातु-पाठः) the verbal root √कृ does not end in a ॠकारः we cannot apply 7-2-41 इट् सनि वा। The अनुवृत्तिः of उपदेशे comes down into 7-2-41 from 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌। This what is explained by the तत्त्वबोधिनी।

By 6-1-9 सन्यङोः।
By 7-4-62 कुहोश्चुः।
By 7-4-60 हलादिः शेषः।
By 8-2-77 हलि च।
By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्।
By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌।
By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे।

    Easy Questions:

    1. Which प्रातिपदिकम् has been used in the word ईट् (प्रथमा-एकवचनम्) (used in the commentary)?
    Answer: The प्रातिपदिकम् is “ईष्”।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
“ईष्” now gets the पद-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् with the help of 1-1-62 प्रत्ययलोपे प्रत्ययलक्षणम्। This allows 8-2-39 to apply in the next step.
By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते।
By 8-4-56 वाऽवसाने।

    2. Which सूत्रम् is used for the नकार-लोपः in the form कर्मभिः (used in the commentary)?
Answer: The सूत्रम् 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य is used for the नकार-लोपः in the form कर्मभिः।

    The form कर्मभिः is derived from the प्रातिपदिकम् “कर्मन्”।

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा……..। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “भिस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
The ending letter “न्” of the प्रातिपदिकम् “कर्मन्” (which has पद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 1-4-17 स्वादिष्वसर्वनामस्थाने) is dropped by 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य। Now as per 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्, this नकार-लोपः (done by 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य) to arrive at the form “कर्म” is not visible to any prior rule (in the अष्टाध्यायी)। Therefore 7-1-9 अतो भिस ऐस् does not apply.
Note: 8-2-2 नलोपः सुप्स्वरसंज्ञातुग्विधिषु कृति limits the authority of 8-2-1 and says that the नकार-लोपः (done by 8-2-7) is not visible only to those rules that are in the four categories mentioned below – others will see the नकार-लोपः।
    The four categories are:
    1. सुँब्विधौ – rules relating to सुँप् affixes
    2. स्वरविधौ – rules relating to accents (in the वेद:)
    3. सञ्ज्ञाविधौ – rules that give names or designations
    4. कृति तुँग्विधौ – rules that prescribe a तुँक् augment in connection with a कृत्-प्रत्यय:।
    Since the सूत्रम् 7-1-9 अतो भिस ऐस् prescribes a सुँब्विधिः, the नकार-लोपः done by 8-2-7 remains असिद्धः in the eyes of 7-1-9.
