Today we will look at the form अभविष्यन् 3Ap-लृँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 4.15.24.

Gita Press translation – (If you urge that it is possible for me to prove the existence of such and such virtues in my conduct and therefore you should extol me for the same. I do not fall in your view.) Who would have himself extolled by bards for the qualities which are non-existent in him, even though he may be able to manifest remarkable virtues in himself? Such and such qualities, it may be urged, are likely* to fall to his lot. But to get oneself praised thus on mere possibilities is to be an object of people’s ridicule. A fool, however, will not understand this banter (24).

*Note: The use of the word अभविष्यन् in the verse has been clearly explained in the commentary as follows:
यद्ययं शास्त्राभ्यासादिकमकरिष्यत्तर्ह्यस्य ते विद्यादयो गुणा अभविष्यन् – If this person were to do a study of the scriptures etc. (which clearly is not the case) then those qualities like knowledge etc. would be his.

अभविष्यन् is derived from the धातुः √भू (भू सत्तायाम्, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१. १)

This धातु: is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, in कर्तरि प्रयोग: √भू takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default.

By 3-3-139 लिङ्‌निमित्ते लृङ् क्रियाऽतिपत्तौ – The affix लृँङ् is employed after a verbal root to denote a future action, provided the conditions – such as those stated in 3-3-156 हेतुहेतुमतोर्लिङ् – for using the affix लिँङ् are satisfied and non-completion of the action is to be expressed.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates “झि” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च, the ending इकारः of a परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः is elided.

By 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः, the affixes “स्य” and “तासिँ” are prescribed after a धातुः when followed by “लृँ” (लृँट् or लृँङ्) or लुँट् respectively.

Note: This rule is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

By 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः, an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: beginning with a letter of the वल्-प्रत्याहारः gets the augment “इट्”। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “इट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the प्रत्यय:।

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुणादेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows.

By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः

By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः, “अन्त्” comes in as a replacement for the झकारः of a प्रत्यय:।

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः

By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:, the letter “स्” is replaced by the cerebral “ष्” when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (“क्”, “ख्”, “ग्”, “घ्”, “ङ्”)। This substitution only takes place if the “स्” is an आदेश: (substitute) or part of a प्रत्यय: (affix.)

Questions:

1. How many times has लृँङ् been used in the गीता?

2. Commenting on the सू्त्रम् 3-1-33 स्यतासी लृलुटोः (used in step 5) the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी says लृ इति लृङ्लृटोर्ग्रहणम् । Please explain.

3. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-3-156 हेतुहेतुमतोर्लिङ् (referred to in step 1) the सिद्धान्त-कौमुदी quotes from the महाभाष्यम् – “भविष्यत्येवेष्यते।” The तत्त्वबोधिनी comments on this statement as follows – लिङित्यनुवर्तमाने पुनर्लिङ्ग्रहणं कालविशेषप्रतिपत्त्यर्थमिति भावः। Please explain.

4. Where else (besides in अभविष्यन्) has लृँङ् been used in the commentary?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“If Śrī Rāma had been there (which clearly he wasn’t), Rāvaṇa would not have abducted Sītā.” Use the verbal root √हृ (हृञ् हरणे १. १०४६) with the उपसर्गः “अप” for “to abduct” and use the अव्ययम् “तत्र” for “there.”

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“If you had paid attention (which you clearly did not)  you would have known the answer to this question.”  Use the verbal root √दा (डुदाञ् दाने ३. १०) for “to pay” (“to give.”)

Easy Questions:

1. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण्नित्यम् been used in the verses?

2. Can you spot the augment “नुँट्” in the commentary?
