Gita Press translation – The (graminivorous) beasts made a calf of the Bull of Lord Śiva and obtained the grasses for milk in the vessel of the forest. Again, the (ferocious) fleeating beasts with sharp teeth made use of the lion (the king of beasts) as the calf and got flesh for milk in the pot of their body. The birds made a calf of Garuḍa (their king) and got mobile creatures (such as moths and insects) as well as immobile creatures (fruits etc.) for milk (23-24).

अधुक्षन् is derived from the धातुः √दुह् (दुहँ प्रपूरणे, अदादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #२. ४)

In the धातु-पाठः, √दुह् has one इत् letter (the अकार: following the हकार:) which has a स्वरित-स्वर:। Hence by 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले, √दुह् takes आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः when the fruit of the action (क्रियाफलम्) accrues to the doer (कर्त्रभिप्रायम् = कर्तृ-अभिप्रायम्)। In the remaining case – when the fruit of the action does not accrue to the doer – by 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्√दुह् takes परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययाः। In short, √दुह् is उभयपदी। In this verse it has taken a परस्मैपद-प्रत्यय:।

By 3-2-110 लुङ्, the affix लुँङ् is prescribed after a verbal root when used in the sense of past.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस्तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates “झि” as the substitute for the लकारः।

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च, the ending इकारः of a परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः is elided.

By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः, “अन्त्” comes in as a replacement for the झकारः of a प्रत्यय:।

By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि, when लुँङ् follows, the प्रत्यय: “च्लि” is prescribed after a verbal root.
Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवाद: for 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌ etc.

Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात्‌ stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for the प्रत्यय: “च्लि”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः

By 3-1-45 शल इगुपधादनिटः क्सः – The affix “च्लि” when without the augment “इट्” takes the substitute “क्स” when following a verbal root which ends in a शल् letter (“श्”, “ष्”, “स्”, “ह्”) and has a penultimate इक् letter (“इ”, “उ”, “ऋ”, “ऌ”).
Note: This सूत्रम् is a अपवादः (exception) for 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्।

Note: Since “क्स” is a कित्-प्रत्ययः, 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च stops 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे

By 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the “अट्”-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the “अट्”-आगमः at the beginning of the अङ्गम्।

By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः

By 8-2-32 दादेर्धातोर्घः, the हकारः of a धातु: that begins with a दकारः in the उपदेशः (धातु-पाठ:), gets घकारः as its replacement when followed by a झल् letter or at the end of a पदम्।

By 8-2-37 एकाचो बशो भष् झषन्तस्य स्ध्वोः, the part of a धातुः, which ends in a झष् letter and has only one vowel, gets its बश् letter replaced by the corresponding भष् letter when followed by a सकारः, the term “ध्व” or at the end of a पदम्।

By 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययो:, the letter “स्” is replaced by the cerebral “ष्” when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (“क्”, “ख्”, “ग्”, “घ्”, “ङ्”)। This substitution only takes place if the “स्” is an आदेश: (substitute) or part of a प्रत्यय: (affix.)

By 8-4-55 खरि च, a झल् letter is replaced by a चर् letter when a खर् letter follows.

  1. 1. Where has the सूत्रम् 8-2-37 एकाचो बशो भष् झषन्तस्य स्ध्वोः (used in step 14) been used in Chapter 3 of the गीता?
    Answer: In verse 10 of Chapter 3 of the गीता the सूत्रम् 8-2-37 एकाचो बशो भष् झषन्तस्य स्ध्वोः has been used in the सुबन्तं पदम् “इष्टकामधुक्” (प्रातिपदिकम् “इष्टकामदुह्”, प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।)

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिँभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्।
By 8-2-32 दादेर्धातोर्घः, the हकारः of the धातु: “दुह्” (which begins with a दकारः) gets घकारः as its replacement.
By 8-2-37 एकाचो बशो भष् झषन्तस्य स्ध्वोः, the part of a धातुः (in this case “दुघ्”), which ends in a झष् letter (in this case “घ्”) and has only one vowel, gets its बश् letter (in this case “द्”) replaced by the corresponding भष् letter (in this case “ध्”) when followed by a सकारः, the term “ध्व” or at the end of a पदम्।
By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते।
By 8-4-56 वाऽवसाने।

    2. The वृत्तिः of the सूत्रम् 3-1-45 शल इगुपधादनिटः क्सः (used in step 7) says “इगुपधो यः शलन्तस्तस्मादनिटश्च्लेः क्सादेशः स्यात्।” Commenting on the word शलन्तः used in the वृत्तिः, the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – शल इति धातोर्विशेषणात्तदन्तलाभः। Please explain.
Answer: The term शलः (used in the सूत्रम् 3-1-45) is an adjective to धातोः because 3-1-45 belongs to the अधिकारः of धातोः which starts from 3-1-22 धातोरेकाचो हलादेः क्रियासमभिहारे यङ्। Now the परिभाषा-सूत्रम् 1-1-72 येन विधिस्तदन्तस्य tells us that – A qualifier by means of which an injunction is made stands for a term which ends in it as well as for itself. Hence in 3-1-45 the term शलः means “following a धातुः which ends in a शल् letter.” This is what is meant by the statement – शल इति धातोर्विशेषणात्तदन्तलाभः।

    3. Commenting further on the सूत्रम् 3-1-45 शल इगुपधादनिटः क्सः the तत्त्वबोधिनी says – शल इति किम् ? Please explain.
Answer: The form अतिप्त is derived from the verbal root √तिप् (तिपृँ क्षरणार्थः १.

By 3-2-110 लुङ्।
By 3-1-43 च्लि लुङि। Note: 7-2-10 एकाच उपदेशेऽनुदात्तात् stops the “इट्”-आगम: (for “च्लि”) which would have been done by 7-2-35 आर्धधातुकस्येड् वलादेः।
By 3-1-44 च्लेः सिच्। Note: Even though the penultimate letter of the verbal root “तिप्” is a इक् letter and the affix “च्लि” is without the augment “इट्”, the सूत्रम् 3-1-45 शल इगुपधादनिटः क्सः does not apply here because the verbal root “तिप्” does not end in a शल् letter.
    Note: As per 1-2-11 लिङ्सिचावात्मनेपदेषु the affix “स्” (सिँच्) is a कित् here. Hence 1-1-5 क्क्ङिति च prevents the गुणादेश: for the penultimate letter of the अङ्गम् “तिप्” which would have been done by 7-3-86 पुगन्तलघूपधस्य च।
By 8-2-26 झलो झलि – The सकारः (of the affix “सिँच्”) is elided if it is preceded and followed by a झल् letter.

    4. In which other सूत्रम् (besides 3-1-45) does पाणिनिः specifically mention the affix “क्स”?
Answer: पाणिनिः specifically mentions the affix “क्स” in the सूत्रम् 7-3-72 क्सस्याचि – The affix “क्स” is elided when followed by a तङ् affix beginning with a vowel.
Note: As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य only the ending letter (अकारः) of “क्स” is elided.

    5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The cowherd milked milk from the cows.” Use द्वितीया-विभक्तिः with both “milk” and “the cows.” Use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “पयस्” for “milk.”

    6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I was not able to stop my tears.” Use the अव्ययम् “उपरोद्धुम्” for “to stop” and use a लुँङ् form of the verbal root √शक् (शकॢँ शक्तौ ५. १७) for “to be able.”

    Easy Questions:

    1. Where has 7-3-109 जसि च  been used in the verses?
    Answer: 7-3-109 जसि च has been used in the form पशवः (पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “पशु”,  प्रथमा-बहुवचनम्।)

By 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌।
1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकार: of “जस्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।
By 7-3-109 जसि च – When the affix “जस्” follows, there is a गुण: substitute for the (ending letter of) of an अङ्गम् ending in a short vowel.
By 6-1-78 एचोऽयवायावः।

    2. Which letter contained in the झष्-प्रत्याहारः is not in the भष्-प्रत्याहारः? Note: The झष्-प्रत्याहारः as well as the भष्-प्रत्याहारः has been used in the सूत्रम् 8-2-37 एकाचो बशो भष् झषन्तस्य स्ध्वोः (used in step 14).
Answer: The letter “झ्” is contained in the झष्-प्रत्याहारः and not in the भष्-प्रत्याहारः।
    The झष्-प्रत्याहारः contains the letters झ्, भ्, घ्, ढ्, ध्।
    The भष्-प्रत्याहारः contains the letters भ्, घ्, ढ्, ध्।
