Today we will look at the form कम्पन्ते 3Ap-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् SB 7-8-7.

Gita Press translation “By whose might, O fool, have you violated, like an undaunted person, the authority of one, viz., myself before whom, when angry, (all) the three worlds, including their guardians, shake (with fear)?”

कम्पन्ते is derived from the धातुः √कम्प् (भ्वादि-गणः, कपिँ चलने, धातु-पाठः #१.

The इकारः at the end of “कपिँ” gets इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् । Therefore this धातुः is an इदित्। The इकारः takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

By 7-1-58 इदितो नुम् धातोः, a धातुः which has इकारः as an इत् gets the नुँम्-आगमः। Note: The सूत्रम् 7-1-58 इदितो नुम् धातोः comes in the “6-4-1 अङ्गस्य ” अधिकार:, and would normally have to wait till an अङ्गम् is created (by adding a प्रत्यय:)। But the use of “धातोः” in 7-1-58 is taken as an indication that this rule is to be applied as soon as the धातु: is taken for use from the धातु-पाठ: – without waiting for any other operation.
As per 1-1-47 मिदचोऽन्त्यात्परः the नुँम्-आगमः attaches itself after the last vowel (अकार:) of “कप्”।

By 8-3-24 नश्चापदान्तस्य झलि, the नकारः (which is not at the end of the पदम्) gets अनुस्वारः as replacement since a झल् letter follows.
By 8-4-58 अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः, when a यय् letter follows, अनुस्वारः gets the सवर्णः of the यय् letter as its replacement.

The इत् letter (इकार:) of “कपिँ” has a अनुदात्त-स्वर:। Thus by 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम् √कम्प् will get आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः। As per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “त” to “महिङ्” get the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √कम्प् can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-बहुवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “झ”।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “झ” as the substitute for the लकारः। “झ” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् – The affixes of the तिङ्-प्रत्याहारः and the affixes that have शकारः as an इत् get the designation of सार्वधातुकम् if they are prescribed in the “धातो:” अधिकार:।

By 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे, the टि-भागः of a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययः which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has टकार: as a इत्), gets एकारः as the replacement.

By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. The शप्-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः -“अन्त्” comes in as a replacement for the झकारः of a प्रत्यय:।

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे

Questions:

1. Where has 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः been used in Chapter One of the गीता?

2. Which word used in the verse has the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-38 तद्धितश्चासर्वविभक्तिः?

3. Where has 7-3-109 जसि च been used?

4. Where else (besides in प्रथम-पुरुष:, बहुवचनम्) is 6-1-97 अतो गुणे used in the conjugation table of √कम्प् in लँट्?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The leaves of all the trees are shaking due to the wind.” Use the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “वायु” for “wind.” Use the तृतीया विभक्ति: to express the meaning “due to.”

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“This rule has one exception.” Since there is no verb directly available in Sanskrit for “to have”, the sentence should be paraphrased to “Of this rule, there exists one exception.” Use the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “अपवाद” for “exception” and the verbal root √वृत् (वृतुँ वर्तने १. ८६२) for “to exist.”

Easy questions:

1. By which सूत्रम् does पाणिनि: define the टि-सञ्ज्ञा (referred to in 3-4-79 टित आत्मनेपदानां टेरे)?

2. Where has the अस्मद्-प्रातिपदिकम् been used in the verse?

Today we will look at the form भजस्व 2As-लोँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb4-8-22.

Gita Press translation “Take refuge, my child, in Him alone, who is so fond of His devotees and access to whose lotus-feet is sought after by men keen to get liberated; and, imprinting His image on your mind, purified by devotion to your duty and exclusively attached to Him, adore the Supreme Person.”

भजस्व is derived from the धातुः √भज् (भ्वादि-गणः, भजँ सेवायाम्, धातु-पाठः #१.

In the धातु-पाठः, the भज्-धातुः has one इत् letter which is the अकार: following the जकार:। This इत् letter has a स्वरित-स्वर:। Therefore, as per the सूत्रम् 1-3-72 स्वरितञितः कर्त्रभिप्राये क्रियाफले, the भज्-धातुः will take आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः when the fruit of the action (क्रियाफलम्) accrues to the doer (कर्त्रभिप्रायम् = कर्तृ-अभिप्रायम्)। In the remaining case – when the fruit of the action does not accrue to the doer – by 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम् – the भज्-धातुः will take परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययाः।
In reality though, this distinction of the fruit of the action accruing to the doer or not, is rarely honored in the language. So as a practical matter, a verbal root such as “भज्” will take either आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः or परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययाः regardless of whether the fruit of the action accrues to the doer or not. In short, भज्-धातुः will be उभयपदी। In this verse, it has taken a आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यय:।

Since the विवक्षा is मध्यम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “थास्”।

By 3-3-162 लोट् च , the affix लोँट् comes after a धातुः when used in the sense of command/request.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “थास्” as the substitute for the लकारः। “थास्” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् – The affixes of the तिङ्-प्रत्याहारः and the affixes that have शकारः as an इत् get the designation of सार्वधातुकम् if they are prescribed in the “धातो:” अधिकार:।

By 3-4-80 थासस्से, the थास्-प्रत्ययः which substitutes a टित्-लकारः (a लकार: which has टकार: as a इत्), gets “से” as the replacement. “से” also gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ। See easy question 1.

By 3-4-91 सवाभ्यां वामौ, the एकारः of लोँट् which follows a सकारः or वकारः is replaced by “व” and “अम्” respectively.

Questions:

1. Where is भजस्व used in the गीता?

2. We have studied another सूत्रम् (besides 3-4-80 थासस्से) which only applies when the लकार: has टकार: as an इत्। Which one is it?

3. 3-4-91 सवाभ्यां वामौ is an अपवाद: for which सूत्रम्?

4. Where has 6-4-105 अतो हेः been used in the verse?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Worship Him alone, by whom all this universe has been pervaded.” Use the adjective प्रातिपदिकम् “व्याप्त” for “pervaded.”

Advanced question:

1. In the commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-4-80 थासस्से, the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी/तत्त्वबोधिनी says – एकारोच्चारणं ज्ञापनार्थं, तङादेशानां टेरेत्वं नेति। Please explain.

Easy question:

1. In step 4, why didn’t “से” replace only the ending letter (सकार:) of “थास्” as per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य?

2. Where has 7-2-102 त्यदादीनामः been used in the verse?

Today we will look at the form अभाषत 3As-लँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb9-18-15.

Gita Press translation “Hissing like a female serpent and biting her lips in anger, the ill-treated Śarmiṣṭhā spoke (as follows) to the perceptor’s daughter, who was thus abusing her.”

अभाषत is derived from the धातुः √भाष् (भाषँ व्यक्तायां वाचि १.

In the धातु-पाठः, the धातुः √भाष् has one इत् letter – the अकार: following the षकार:। This इत् letter has a अनुदात्त-स्वर:। Thus by 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम् √भाष् will get आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः। As per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “त” to “महिङ्” get the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √भाष् can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “त”।

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ् , the affix लँङ् follows a धातुः when used in the sense of past not of today.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “त” as the substitute for the लकारः। “त” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् – The affixes of the तिङ्-प्रत्याहारः and the affixes that have शकारः as an इत् get the designation of सार्वधातुकम् if they are prescribed in the “धातो:” अधिकार:।

By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. The शप्-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

by 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the अट्-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the अट्-आगमः before the अङ्गम् ।

अनुबन्ध-लोपः is done by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

Questions:

1. Where is अभाषत used in the गीता?

2. Which प्रत्याहार: is a subset of the तिङ्-प्रत्याहार:?

3. Can you recall three other (besides “अट्”) आगमा: (that we have studied) which have टकार: as an इत्?

4. Looking at the form अभाषत, how can we tell that the लकार: that has been used does not have टकार: as an इत्?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Speak clearly.” Use स्पष्टम् as an adverb meaning “clearly.”

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“There is (exists) only one answer to this question.” ८६२) for “to exist.”

Easy questions:

1. Can you spot an अव्ययम् in the verse?

2. Where has the टा-प्रत्यय: (तृतीया-एकवचनम्) been used in the verse?

Today we will look at the form अनुमोदते 3As-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb10-60-45.

Translation “O Parīkṣit! He, who for his part, sings, or hears recounted, or rejoices over the inimitable exploits performed by Śrī Kṛṣṇa – who is the (supreme) Cause of the evolution, continuance and dissolution of the universe – attains (loving) devotion to the almighty Lord, the Bestower of Liberation.”

मोदते is derived from the धातुः √मुद् (मुदँ हर्षे १.

In the धातु-पाठः, the धातुः √मुद् has one इत् letter – the अकार: following the दकार:। This इत् letter has a अनुदात्त-स्वर:। Thus by 1-3-12 अनुदात्तङित आत्मनेपदम् √मुद्-धातुः will get आत्मनेपद-प्रत्ययाः। As per 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “त” to “महिङ्” get the आत्मनेपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So मुद्-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “त”।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

By 7-3-86 पुगन्‍तलघूपधस्‍य च, when a अङ्गम् is followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्ययः or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्ययः, then its इक्-letter takes गुण-आदेशः in the following two cases: i) The अङ्गम् ends in a पुक्-आगमः। or ii) The penultimate letter of the अङ्गम् has the लघु-सञ्ज्ञा।

Note: “अनु” has been used as a उपसर्ग:। – ref.

Questions:

1. Where has 3-4-100 इतश्च been used in the verse?

१०९२) belongs to the भ्वादि-गणः। Then how did it take “श्नु” (instead of the expected default “शप्”) as the गण-विकरण-प्रत्यय: in the form शृणोति used in this verse?

3. Which धातु: has been used in the form “गायति”?

4. By which सूत्रम् does पाणिनि: define the लघु-सञ्ज्ञा?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“I very much like these flowers.” Paraphrase this to “These flowers are very much pleasing unto me.” Use the अव्ययम् “भृशम्” for “very much” and the धातु: “रुच्” (रुचँ दीप्तावभिप्रीतौ च १. ८४७) for “to please.” Use चतुर्थी विभक्ति: with अस्मद्-प्रातिपदिकम् for “unto me.”

Advanced Question:

1. Commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the सिद्धान्तकौमुदी says – अटावितौ। On this the तत्त्वबोधिनी comments – ‘अकार उच्चारणार्थ’ इति तु नोक्तं, लिडादिवैलक्षण्यसंपादनाय तस्यावश्यवक्तव्यत्वात्। Please explain.

Easy Questions:

1. Derive the form

2. Can you spot four places in the verse where 6-1-77 इको यणचि has been used?

Today we will look at the form गच्छति 3As-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb10-31-11.

Gita Press translation “Our mind, O beloved Lord, grows uneasy to think that Your feet, charming as a lotus, get pricked with spikes of corn, blades of grass and sprouts when You go out of Vraja pasturing the cattle.”

Note: The literal translation of “कलिलतां गच्छति” would be “goes to uneasiness.” Since this is awkward in English, it has been translated as “grows uneasy.”

गच्छति is derived from the धातुः √गम् (गमॢँ गतौ १.

In the धातु-पाठः, the धातुः √गम् has one इत् letter – the ऌकार: following the मकार:। This इत् letter has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus the धातुः √गम् is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the गम्-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So गम्-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “तिप्”।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः। “तिप्” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् – The affixes of the तिङ्-प्रत्याहारः and the affixes that have शकारः as an इत् get the designation of सार्वधातुकम् if they are prescribed in the “धातो:” अधिकार:।

By 7-3-77 इषुगमियमां छः – The ending letter of the verbal roots √इष् (इषुँ इच्छायाम् ६. ११३९) gets छकारः as replacement when followed by a शित्-प्रत्ययः (a प्रत्यय: having a शकार: as an इत्)।

By 6-1-73 छे च, a short vowel (ह्रस्वः) gets the तुँक्-आगमः when a छकारः follows in संहितायाम्। By 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, an augment which is marked with क् as an इत् attaches to the end of the term in the genitive case. In the present example, the term in the genitive case in the सूत्रम् is “ह्रस्वस्य” which is coming as अनुवृत्ति: from 6-1-71. Therefore the तुँक्-आगम: comes after the ह्रस्व: (अकार:)।

Questions:

1. Can you find a लोँट् form of the धातुः √गम् in Chapter 10 of the गीता?

2. Where is 7-3-78 पाघ्राध्मास्थाम्नादाण्दृश्यर्त्तिसर्त्तिशदसदां
पिबजिघ्रधमतिष्ठमनयच्छपश्यर्च्छधौशीयसीदाः used in the verse?

3. 6-1-73 छे च belongs to which अधिकार: in the अष्टाध्यायी?

4. Can you recall a सूत्रम् (which we have studied) wherein पाणिनि: has used 6-1-73 छे च?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Yesterday morning I went to the temple.” Use the अव्ययम् “ह्यस्” for “yesterday” and the अव्ययम् “प्रातर्” for “morning.”

Advanced question:

1. In commenting on the सूत्रम् 6-1-73 छे च, the तत्त्वबोधिनी says –
Please explain.
Note: “विदिभिदिच्छिदे: -” is referring to the सूत्रम् 3-2-162 विदिभिदिच्छिदेः कुरच् ।

Easy Questions:

Today we will look at the form अशृणवम् 3As-लँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb1-5-26.

Gita Press translation “There (in that society of godly men) by the grace of those saints, who were given to singing the Lord’s praises, I would daily listen to the soul-ravishing stories of Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Even as I heard these stories with reverence, O dear Vyāsa, step by step I developed an attraction for the Lord of delightful fame.”

अशृणवम् is derived from the धातुः √श्रु (भ्वादि-गणः, श्रु श्रवणे, धातु-पाठः #१.

In the धातु-पाठः, the √श्रु-धातुः has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the √श्रु-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √श्रु-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is उत्तम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “मिप्”।

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ् , the affix लँङ् follows a धातुः when used in the sense of past not of today.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “मिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः। “मिप्” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

By 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः, the तिङ्-प्रत्ययाः तस्, थस्, थ and मिप् of a लकारः which is a ङित्, are replaced by ताम्, तम्, त and अम् respectively. अम् also gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ

By 3-1-74 श्रुवः शृ च , the श्नु-प्रत्ययः is placed after the verbal root √श्रु (श्रु श्रवणे १. १०९२), when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. Simultaneously, “श्रु” takes the substitution “शृ”। The श्नु-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending मकारः of “अम्” from getting the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows.
Note: The प्रत्यय: “नु” is ङिद्वत् by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित्। Therefore 1-1-5 ग्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-84 from performing the गुण: substitution for the ऋकार: of “शृ”।

By वार्त्तिकम् (under 8-4-1) – ऋवर्णान्नस्य णत्वं वाच्यम् – णकारः shall be ordained in the place of the नकारः after the vowel ऋ also (along-side the रेफः and षकारः)।

Questions:

1. Can you spot another तिङन्तं पदम् (besides अशृणवम्) with a लँङ्-प्रत्यय: in the verse?

2. Where is this form (answer to question 1) used in the गीता?

3. In the absence of 3-4-101 तस्थस्थमिपां तांतंतामः, which सूत्रम् would have applied in step 4?

4. We have studied one सूत्रम् which is an अपवाद: for 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः। Which one is it?

5. With the help of some words from the verse, construct the following sentence in Sanskrit –
“Let us hear the soul-ravishing stories of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.”

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“Quickly come here.” Use the verbal root √गम् (गमॢ- [गतौ]१. ११३७) with the उपसर्ग: “आङ्” for “to come” and use “शीघ्रम्” as an adverb “quickly.”

Easy questions:

1. Where is 6-1-109 एङः पदान्तादति used in the verse?

2. Can you spot a टा-प्रत्यय: in the verse?

Today we will look at the form अपश्यत् 3As-लँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb3-24-46.

Gita Press translation “He perceived the Lord, his own Self, as present in all living beings, and all living beings in the Lord, His own Self.”

अपश्यत् is derived from the धातुः √दृश् (भ्वादि-गणः, दृशिँर् प्रेक्षणे , धातु-पाठः #१.

In the धातु-पाठः, the √दृश्-धातुः has “इर्” as an इत्। (Note: “इर्” gets the इत्-सञ्ज्ञा by the वार्त्तिकम् “इर इत्सञ्ज्ञा वाच्या।”) The इकार: in “इर्” has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus the √दृश्-धातुः is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the √दृश्-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √दृश्-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “तिप्”।

By 3-2-111 अनद्यतने लङ् , the affix लँङ् follows a धातुः when used in the sense of past not of today.

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च, the ending इकारः of a परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः is elided.

By 7-3-78 पाघ्राध्मास्थाम्नादाण्दृश्यर्त्तिसर्त्तिशदसदां पिबजिघ्रधमतिष्ठमनयच्छपश्यर्च्छधौशीयसीदाः – When followed by a प्रत्ययः which begins with शकार: as an इत्, the verbal roots “√पा, √घ्रा, √ध्मा, √स्था, √म्ना, √दाण्, √दृश्, √ऋ, √सृ, √शद् and √सद्” get “पिब, जिघ्र, धम, तिष्ठ, मन, यच्छ, पश्य, ऋच्छ, धौ, शीय and सीद” as replacements respectively.

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे, in the place of the letter अ which not at the end of a पदम्, and the following गुण: letter, there is single substitute of the latter (the गुण: letter.)

by 6-4-71 लुङ्लङ्लृङ्क्ष्वडुदात्तः – When followed by लुँङ्, लँङ् or लृँङ्, an अङ्गम् gets the अट्-आगमः which is उदात्तः। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the अट्-आगमः before the अङ्गम् ।

अनुबन्ध-लोपः is done by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

4. Why did the सूत्रम् 6-4-134 अल्लोपोऽनः not apply in the form आत्मनि?

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The teacher saw one defect in my answer.” Use the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् “दोष” for “defect” and the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “उत्तर” for “answer.”

6. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“One who gives up desire attains peace.” Use the masculine प्रातिपदिकम् “काम” for “desire”, the verbal root √त्यज् (त्यजँ हानौ १. ११४१) for “to give up” and the verbal root √ऋ (ऋ गतिप्रापणयोः १. १०८६) for “to attain.”

Easy Questions:

1. Where has 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययोः been used in the verse?

2. Which सूत्रम् was used to get भगवति + अपि = भवत्यपि? Which one for च + आत्मनि = चात्मनि?

Today we will look at the form जिघ्रन्ति 3Ap-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb3-9-5.

Gita Press translation “O Lord, You never leave the lotus heart of Your devotees, who take in through the opening of their ears the fragrance (delightful glory) of Your lotus-feet, wafted by the breeze of the Vedas, Your feet being held fast by the cords of supreme devotion.”

जिघ्रन्ति is derived from the धातुः √घ्रा (भ्वादि-गणः, घ्रा गन्धोपादाने, धातु-पाठः #१.

In the धातु-पाठः, the √घ्रा-धातुः has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the √घ्रा-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √घ्रा-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-बहुवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “झि”।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

Easy questions:

1. Where is 7-1-9 अतो भिस ऐस् used in the verse?

2. Can you spot a सम्बुद्धि-प्रत्यय: used in the verse?

Today we will look at the form भ्रमन्ति 3Ap-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb11-23-50.

Gita Press translation “Taking this body (of their own) – a creation of their mind (alone) – as their very self and the body of their son, wife etc., as theirs, men of clouded judgement, laboring under the misapprehension that this is my own and he is another, revolve in the world of matter (enveloped in the darkness of ignorance), the end of which is difficult to reach.”

भ्रमन्ति is derived from the धातुः √भ्रम् (भ्वादि-गणः, भ्रमुँ चलने, धातु-पाठः #१.

In the धातु-पाठः, the भ्रम्-धातुः has one इत् letter – the उकार: following the मकार:। This इत् letter has a उदात्त-स्वर:। Thus the भ्रम्-धातुः is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the भ्रम्-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So भ्रम्-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-बहुवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “झि”।

By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “झि” as the substitute for the लकारः। “झि” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम् – The affixes of the तिङ्-प्रत्याहारः and the affixes that have शकारः as an इत् get the designation of सार्वधातुकम् if they are prescribed in the “धातो:” अधिकार:।

By 7-1-3 झोऽन्तः,“अन्त्” comes in as a replacement for the झकारः of a प्रत्यय:।

By 6-1-97 अतो गुणे, in the place of an अकार: which not at the end of a पदम्, and the following गुण: letter, there is single substitute of the latter (the गुण: letter.)

Questions:

1. What is the alternate form (other than भ्रमन्ति) for √भ्रम् (भ्रमुँ चलने, धातु-पाठः #१.

2. Which word used in the verse gets the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः?

Today we will look at the form शृणुयात् 3As-विधिलिँङ् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् 12-12-58.

Gita Press translation “He who repeats this Purāṇa (to others) everyday with an undivided mind (say,) for three hours or (for that matter even) for a second and (in the same way) he who listens to it repeatedly with reverence purifies his very soul.”

शृणुयात् is derived from the धातुः √श्रु (भ्वादि-गणः, श्रु श्रवणे, धातु-पाठः #१.

As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So √श्रु-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “तिप्”।

By 3-3-161 विधिनिमन्त्रणामन्त्रणाधीष्टसंप्रश्नप्रार्थनेषु लिङ् , the affix लिङ् is prescribed after a धातुः when used in the sense of command, direction, invitation, request, inquiry and entreaty.

3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः। “तिप्” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

By 3-4-100 इतश्‍च, the ending letter (इकारः) of a इकारान्तः (ending in a इकारः) परस्मैपद-प्रत्ययः which came in the place of a ङित्-लकारः, is elided.

By 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च , the परस्मैपदम् affixes of लिँङ् get यासुट् as an augment, and this augment is उदात्तः and a ङित्। 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ places the यासुट्-आगमः before the प्रत्यय:। See advanced question 1.

The उकार: in यासुट् is for pronunciation only (उच्चारणार्थम्)। The टकार: is an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and takes लोप: by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

Note: The प्रत्यय: “नु” is ङिद्वत् by 1-2-4 सार्वधातुकमपित् and “यास् त्” is ङित् by 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्‍मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्‍च। Therefore 1-1-5 ग्क्ङिति च prevents 7-3-84 from performing the गुण: substitution for the ऋकार: of “शृ” as well as the उकार: of “नु”।

By 7-2-79 लिङः सलोपोऽनन्‍त्‍यस्‍य, the सकारः of a सार्वधातुक-लिङ् affix is elided, provided it is not the final letter of the affix.

By वार्त्तिकम् (under 8-4-1) – ऋवर्णान्नस्य णत्वं वाच्यम् – णकारः shall be ordained in the place of the नकारः after the vowel ऋ also (along-side the रेफः and षकारः)।

Note: “अनु” has been used as a उपसर्ग:। – ref.

5. How would you say this in Sanskrit?

Advanced question:

1. In commenting on the सूत्रम् 3-4-103 यासुट् परस्मैपदेषूदात्तो ङिच्च, the किशिका says “स्थानिवद्भावादेव लिङादेशस्य ङित्त्वे सिद्धे यासुटो ङिद्वचनं ज्ञापनार्थम् – लकाराश्रयङित्त्वमादेशानां न भवतीति।” Please explain using the example
