यूनः mGs

Today we will look at the form यूनः-mGs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb4-29-72 ।

गर्भे बाल्येऽप्यपौष्कल्यादेकादशविधं तदा ।
लिङ्गं न दृश्यते यूनः कुह्वां चन्द्रमसो यथा ।। ४-२९-७२ ।।

Translation “The senses being not fully developed during gestation and infancy too, the conditioning ego appearing in the form of the ten Indriyas and the mind of a young man is not (distinctly) perceived in those periods and any more than the orb of the moon on the last night of a lunar month.”

‘युवन्’ gets प्रातिपदिकसञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-45 अर्थवदधातुरप्रत्ययः प्रातिपदिकम् । The विवक्षा here is षष्ठी-एकवचनम्4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा… mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘युवन्’

(1) युवन् + ङस् । ‘युवन्’ gets भ-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-4-18 यचि भम्

(2) युवन् + अस् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः। 1-3-4 न विभक्तौ तुस्माः prevents the ending सकारः of ङस् from getting इत्-सञ्ज्ञा।

(3) यु उ अन् + अस् । By 6-4-133 श्वयुवमघोनामतद्धिते, the अन् ending युवन्, which has the भ-सञ्ज्ञा, takes सम्प्रसारणम् when followed by an affix which is not a तद्धितः। By 1-1-45 इग्यणः सम्प्रसारणम् the letter व् is replaced by उ।
See question 5.

(4) यु उन् + अस् । By 6-1-108 सम्प्रसारणाच्च, when a सम्प्रसारणम् is followed by a vowel, there is a single replacement of the prior letter (the सम्प्रसारणम्)।

(5) यूनस् । By 6-1-101 अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः

(6) यूनः । रुँत्व-विसर्गौ – by 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः and 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः

Questions:

1. In the verse, can you spot two अव्यये that have got the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-38 तद्धितश्चासर्वविभक्तिः?

2. Besides “वि”, which other term from the प्रादिगण: has been used in the verse? Does it have the उपसर्ग-सञ्ज्ञा here?

3. Can you spot an आट्-आगम: in the verse?

4. Where else (besides in यून:) has the ङस्-प्रत्यय: been used?

5. Why didn’t the यकार: in “युवन्” take सम्प्रसारणम् in step 3?

6. Where has the सूत्रम् 6-4-133 श्वयुवमघोनामतद्धिते been used in Chapter 5 of the गीता?

7. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The Sun is not seen at night.” Use the feminine noun “निशा” for “night”; use a verb from the verse for “seen.”

8. Please list the two synonyms for “बाल्यम्” (प्रातिपदिकम् “बाल्य” neuter, meaning “childhood”) as given in the अमरकोश:।
शिशुत्वं शैशवं बाल्यं ।।२-६-४०।।
(इति त्रीणि बालत्वनामानि)

Easy questions:

1. Derive the form गर्भे (सप्तमी-एकवचनम्) from the पुंलिङ्ग-प्रातिपदिकम् “गर्भ”।

2. Which सूत्रम् was used to get बाल्ये + अपि = बाल्येऽपि? Which one for अपि + अपौष्कल्यात् = अप्यपौष्कल्यात्?
