निःसरति 3As-लँट्

Today we will look at the form निःसरति 3As-लँट् from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb7-15-33 ।

यतो यतो निःसरति मनः कामहतं भ्रमत् ।
ततस्तत उपाहृत्य हृदि रुन्ध्याच्छनैर्बुधः ।। ७-१५-३३ ।।

Gita Press translation “A wise man should gradually hold in the heart his roving mind, smitten with desires, withdrawing it from all those objects towards which it goes.”

सरति is derived from the धातुः √सृ (सृ गतौ, भ्वादि-गणः, धातु-पाठः #१. १०८५)

“निस्” has been used as an उपसर्ग: – ref. 1-4-59 उपसर्गाः क्रियायोगे

The विवक्षा is वर्तमान-काले, कर्तरि प्रयोग:, प्रथम-पुरुषः, एकवचनम्।

In the धातु-पाठः, the सृ-धातुः has no इत् letters. It is devoid of any indications for bringing in आत्मनेपद-प्रत्यया:। Therefore, as per 1-3-78 शेषात् कर्तरि परस्मैपदम्, the सृ-धातुः, in कर्तरि प्रयोग:, will take the परस्मैपद-प्रत्यया: by default. As per 1-4-99 लः परस्मैपदम्, 1-4-100 तङानावात्मनेपदम्, the nine प्रत्यया: from “तिप्” to “मस्” get the परस्मैपद-सञ्ज्ञा। So सृ-धातुः can take only one of these nine प्रत्यया: in कर्तरि प्रयोग:। Since the विवक्षा is प्रथम-पुरुष-एकवचनम्, the प्रत्यय: will be “तिप्”।

(1) सृ + लँट् । By 3-2-123 वर्तमाने लट्, the affix लँट् comes after a धातुः when denoting an action in the present tense.

(2) सृ + ल् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्, 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) सृ + तिप् । 3-4-78 तिप्तस्झिसिप्थस्थमिब्वस्मस् तातांझथासाथांध्वमिड्वहिमहिङ् mandates the प्रत्ययः “तिप्” as the substitute for the लकारः। “तिप्” gets the सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

(4) सृ + शप् + तिप् । By 3-1-68 कर्तरि शप्‌, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after a verbal root, when followed by a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: that is used signifying the agent. The शप्-प्रत्यय: which is a शित्, gets सार्वधातुक-सञ्ज्ञा by 3-4-113 तिङ्शित्सार्वधातुकम्

(5) सर् + शप् + तिप् । By 7-3-84 सार्वधातुकार्धधातुकयोः, an अङ्गम् whose final letter is an इक् gets गुण-आदेशः, when a सार्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: or an आर्धधातुक-प्रत्यय: follows. By 1-1-51 उरण् रपरः, in the place of ऋवर्ण: if an अण् letter (अ, इ, उ) comes as a substitute, it is always followed by a रँ letter.

(6) सर् + अ + ति । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्, 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(7) सरति ।

  1. Questions:
    1. In the last ten verses of Chapter Two of the गीता can you spot a verbal form in which – just as in this example – लँट् has been used in प्रथमपुरुष-एकवचनम् following a धातु: ending in a ऋकार:? The steps will be the same as in this example.
Answer: हरति is derived from the धातुः √हृ (भ्वादि-गणः)। लँट् has been used in प्रथमपुरुष-एकवचनम्।
    इन्द्रियाणां हि चरतां यन्मनोऽनुविधीयते |
    तदस्य हरति प्रज्ञां वायुर्नावमिवाम्भसि || 2-67||

    2. List the ten लकारा: used in Classical Sanskrit.
    Answer: In भाषायाम् (classical Sanskrit) only लँट, लिँट्, लुँट्, लृँट्, लोँट्, लँङ्, लिँङ्, लुँङ्, लृँङ् are used. लिँङ् has two varieties विधिलिँङ् and आशीर्लिँङ्। Taking this two-fold distinction of लिँङ् into account, in भाषायाम् also there are ten लकारा:।

    3. How many of these (answer to question 2) have टकार: as an इत् and how many have ङकार: as an इत्?
    Answer: लँट्, लिँट्, लुँट, लृँट् and लोँट् have टकार: as an इत् and लँङ्, लिँङ् (विधिलिँङ्, आशीर्लिँङ्), लुँङ् and लृँङ् have ङकार: as an इत् by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम्।

    4. Can you spot an अव्ययम् from the स्वरादि-गण: (ref. 1-1-37 स्वरादिनिपातमव्ययम्) used in the verse?
Answer: The अव्ययम् शनैः (शनैस्) from the स्वरादि-गण: is used in the verse.

    5. Which term used in this verse gets the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा by the सूत्रम् 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः?
    Answer: उपाहृत्य ।
According to the सूत्रम् 1-1-40 क्त्वातोसुन्कसुनः words ending in the क्त्वा-प्रत्यय: get the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा । If there is a compound formation then the क्त्वा-प्रत्यय: is replaced by ल्यप् as per 7-1-37 समासेऽनञ्पूर्वे क्त्वो ल्यप्। The word उपाहृत्य ends in ल्यप्-प्रत्यय:। As a general rule, an आदेश: (substitute) inherits the properties of the term (स्थानी) which it replaced – ref. 1-1-56 स्थानिवदादेशोऽनल्विधौ। Here the ल्यप्-आदेश: will inherit the property (अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा) from the replaced item (क्त्वा-प्रत्यय:)। Hence उपाहृत्य gets the अव्यय-सञ्ज्ञा।

    6. Can the order of steps 3 and 4 be reversed? (Can step 4 be done first and then step 3?)
Answer: No, they can’t be reversed. In step 4, the शप्-प्रत्यय: is placed after the verbal root, when followed by a सर्वधातुक-प्रत्यय: “तिप्”, which was added in step 3. लँट्-प्रत्यय: is not a सर्वधातुक-प्रत्यय:, so we can’t add शप् immediately after step 2.

    7. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“The Ganga flows forth from the Himalaya.” Use a verb from the verse for “flows forth.”
    Answer: गङ्गा हिमालयात् निःसरति = गङ्गा हिमालयान्निःसरति।

    धीमान्सूरिः कृती कृष्टिर्लब्धवर्णो विचक्षणः ।
