बिभ्रत् mNs

Today we will look at the form बिभ्रत्-mNs from श्रीमद्भागवतम् Sb3-11-26.

मन्वन्तरेषु भगवान्बिभ्रत्सत्त्वं स्वमूर्तिभिः ।
मन्वादिभिरिदं विश्वमवत्युदितपौरुषः ।। ३-११-२६ ।।

Gita Press translation “During the Manvantaras the Lord assumes the quality of Sattva (harmony) and protects the universe, exhibiting His strength in the form of Manus and others, who are His own manifestations.”

बिभ्रत् is a शतृँ-प्रत्ययान्त-शब्द: derived from the भृ-धातु:। Since this धातु: is in the जुहोत्यादि-गणः, the final form is derived through reduplication (अभ्यासः)। Here, the “बिभृ” of बिभ्रत् gets अभ्यस्त-सञ्ज्ञा by 6-1-5 उभे अभ्यस्तम्

‘बिभ्रत्’ gets प्रातिपदिकसञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 कृत्तद्धितसमासाश्च। The विवक्षा here is पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्। 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा… mandates the प्रत्ययाः सुँ, औ, जस् etc. after the प्रातिपदिकम् ‘बिभ्रत्’।

(1) बिभ्रत् + सुँ । Note: The affix ‘सुँ’ has the सर्वनामस्थान-सञ्ज्ञा here as per 1-1-43 सुडनपुंसकस्य

(2) बिभ्रत् + स् । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

(3) बिभ्रत् । सकार-लोपः by 6-1-68 हल्ङ्याब्भ्यो दीर्घात्‌ सुतिस्यपृक्तं हल्

(4) Here the शतृँ-प्रत्यय: follows an अङ्गम् (‘बिभृ’) which has the अभ्यस्त-सञ्ज्ञा। Hence the शतृँ-प्रत्यय: does not take the नुँम् augment because 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः is stopped by 7-1-78 नाभ्यस्ताच्छतुः – The ‘शतृँ’ affix that follows an अभ्यस्तम् does not get the नुँम् augment.

(5) बिभ्रद् । By 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते, a झल् letter that occurs at the end of a पदम् is replaced by a जश् letter.

(6) बिभ्रद् / बिभ्रत् । By 8-4-56 वाऽवसाने, a झल् letter is optionally replaced by a चर् letter when nothing follows.

Questions:

1. What kind of सूत्रम् is 7-1-78 नाभ्यस्ताच्छतुः?

b) अपवाद-सूत्रम् – A rule which is an exception to another rule
c) परिभाषा-सूत्रम् – A rule which helps in interpreting/applying other rules
d) सञ्ज्ञा-सूत्रम् – A rule which defines a term

2. Derive the नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा/द्वितीया-बहुवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “बिभ्रत्”।

3. Why was no सन्धि-कार्यम् done between उभे and अभ्यस्तम् in the सूत्रम् 6-1-5 उभे अभ्यस्तम्?

4. Can you spot another (besides “बिभ्रत्”) प्रातिपदिकम् ending in a तकार: used in the verse?

5. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्‌ been used?

6. Which term from the प्रादि-गण: (ref. 1-4-58 प्रादयः) has been used?

“A king protects his own subjects from danger.” Use a verb from the verse for “protects”, use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “सङ्कट” for “danger” and the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रजा” (in the plural) for “subjects.”

8. The अमरकोश: gives the three modes of nature (प्रकृति-गुणा:)। One of them is सत्त्वम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “सत्त्व”) used in this verse. Please list the other two.
गुणाः सत्त्वं रजस्तमः ।।१-४-२९।।
(सत्त्वरजस्तमांसि प्रकृतिगुणा इत्युच्यन्ते)।

Easy questions:

1. Derive the form मन्वन्तरेषु (सप्तमी-बहुवचनम्) from the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “मन्वन्तर”।

2. Which सूत्रम् was used to get अवति + उदितपौरुषः = अवत्युदितपौरुषः?

  1. Questions:
    1. What kind of सूत्रम् is 7-1-78 नाभ्यस्ताच्छतुः?
    a) निषेध-सूत्रम् – A rule which negates (stops the application of) another rule
    b) अपवाद-सूत्रम् – A rule which is an exception to another rule
    c) परिभाषा-सूत्रम् – A rule which helps in interpreting/applying other rules
    d) सञ्ज्ञा-सूत्रम् – A rule which defines a term

Answer: a) निषेध-सूत्रम् – A rule which negates (stops the application of) another rule.
    7-1-78 stops the application of 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः।

    2. Derive the नपुंसकलिङ्गे प्रथमा/द्वितीया-बहुवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “बिभ्रत्”।
    बिभ्रत् + जस् /शस् ।
    बिभ्रत् + शि । 7-1-20 जश्शसोः शिः, 1-1-42 शि सर्वनामस्थानम् ।
    बिभ्रत् + इ । 1-3-8 लशक्वतद्धिते, 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः ।
    बिभ्रति।
    But, optionally we get नुँम्-आगमः by 7-1-79 वा नपुंसकस्य।

So there are two forms बिभ्रति/बिभ्रन्ति।

    3. Why was no सन्धि-कार्यम् done between उभे and अभ्यस्तम् in the सूत्रम् 6-1-5 उभे अभ्यस्तम्?
Answer: उभे is प्रथमा-द्विवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “उभ”, नपुंसकलिङ्गे । The एकार: in उभे gets प्रगृह्य-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-1-11 ईदूदेद्द्विवचनं प्रगृह्यम्। Then, as per 6-1-125 प्लुतप्रगृह्या अचि there will be no सन्धि-कार्यम् between the एकार: and the following अच् (which is the अकार: in अभ्यस्तम्)। Vowels having the प्रगृह्य-सञ्ज्ञा retain their natural state when followed by a vowel. (This means that no सन्धि-कार्याणि are performed.)

    4. Can you spot another (besides “बिभ्रत्”) प्रातिपदिकम् ending in a तकार: used in the verse?
    Answer: भगवान् – प्रातिपदिकम् “भगवत्” पुंलिङ्गे प्रथमा-एकवचनम्।
    भगवत् + सुँ ।
    भगवात् + स्। 6-4-14 अत्वसन्तस्य च अधातोः, 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत्
    भगवा नुँम् त् + सुँ । By 7-1-70 उगिदचां सर्वनामस्थानेऽधातोः, a non-verbal base with an उक् (उ, ऋ, ऌ) as a marker takes the नुँम् augment when followed by a सर्वनामस्थानम् affix.
By 8-2-23 संयोगान्तस्य लोपः, the संयोगान्तपदम् “भगवान्त्” takes लोपः। As per 1-1-52 अलोऽन्त्यस्य, only the ending letter (तकार:) of the पदम् will take लोपः। After this 8-2-7 नलोपः प्रातिपदिकान्तस्य does not apply because of 8-2-1 पूर्वत्रासिद्धम्।

    5. Where has the सूत्रम् 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात् been used?
    Answer: In इदम् – नपुंसकलिङ्गे द्वितीया-एकवचनम् of the प्रातिपदिकम् “इदम्”
    इदम् + अम्
    इदम् – By 7-1-23 स्वमोर्नपुंसकात्, the affixes सुँ and अम् that follow a neuter अङ्गम् take the लुक् elision.

    6. Which term from the प्रादि-गण: (ref. 1-4-58 प्रादयः) has been used?
Answer: उद् in “उदित” is from the प्रादि-गण:।(विश्वमवत्युदितपौरुषः)।

    7. How would you say this in Sanskrit?
“A king protects his own subjects from danger.” Use a verb from the verse for “protects”, use the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “सङ्कट” for “danger” and the feminine प्रातिपदिकम् “प्रजा” (in the plural) for “subjects.”
    Answer: नृपः/नृपतिः स्वस्य/स्वा: प्रजा: सङ्कटात् अवति = नृपः/नृपतिः स्वस्य/स्वा: प्रजा: सङ्कटादवति।
Note: The सर्वनाम-शब्द: “स्व” can be used in the meaning of “आत्मन्” (meaning “oneself”) and also “आत्मीय” (meaning “belonging to oneself.”) Using the first meaning we can says स्वस्य (= आत्मन:) or using the second meaning we can say स्वा: (= आत्मीया:)।

    8. The अमरकोश: gives the three modes of nature (प्रकृति-गुणा:)। One of them is सत्त्वम् (प्रातिपदिकम् “सत्त्व”) used in this verse. Please list the other two.
    गुणाः सत्त्वं रजस्तमः ।।१-४-२९।।
    (सत्त्वरजस्तमांसि प्रकृतिगुणा इत्युच्यन्ते)।
    Answer:
    रजः (प्रातिपदिकम् “रजस्” neuter)
    तमः (प्रातिपदिकम् “तमस्” neuter)

    Easy questions:
    1. Derive the form मन्वन्तरेषु (सप्तमी-बहुवचनम्) from the neuter प्रातिपदिकम् “मन्वन्तर”।
    Answer: मन्वन्तर + सुप् । 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छस्टा…..।
    मन्वन्तर + सु । अनुबन्ध-लोपः by 1-3-3 हलन्त्यम् and 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः।
    मन्वन्तरे + सु । by 7-3-103 बहुवचने झल्येत् the ending अ of a प्रातिपदिकम् is changed to ए when followed by a plural सुँप् affix beginning with a झल् letter.
मन्वन्तरेषु । by 8-3-59 आदेशप्रत्यययोः the letter स् is replaced by the cerebral ष् when preceded either by a letter of the इण्-प्रत्याहार: or a letter of the क-वर्ग: (क्, ख्, ग्, घ्, ङ्)। This substitution only takes place if the स् is an आदेश: or part of a प्रत्यय:।

    2. Which सूत्रम् was used to get अवति + उदितपौरुषः = अवत्युदितपौरुषः?
    Answer: 6-1-77 इको यणचि।
