Let’s look at the सुबन्तशब्दाः first

1. भिक्षुः is declined similar to शम्भुशब्दः

सुँ is mandated as the प्रत्ययः by 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌

भिक्षुस् gets पदसंज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् Therefore we apply 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः to replace the letter स् at the end of a पदम् with रुँ

उँ gets the इत्-संज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and is elided by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

सुँ is mandated as the प्रत्ययः by 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌

नारायणपरायण + स् gets पदसंज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् Therefore we apply 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः to replace the letter स् at the end of a पदम् with रुँ

उँ gets the इत्-संज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and is elided by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

By 8-3-15 खरवसानयोर्विसर्जनीयः the letter र् at the end of a पदम् is replaced with विसर्गः as अवासानम् follows.

3. अात्मारामः and अनपाश्रयः can be similarly declined as नारायणपरायणः

We will next look at a few

सुँ is mandated as the प्रत्ययः by 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टाभ्याम्भिस्ङेभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसिभ्याम्भ्यस्ङसोसाम्ङ्योस्सुप्‌

Apply 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः to replace the letter स् at the end of a पदम् with रुँ

8-3-17 भोभगोअघोअपूर्वस्य योऽशि When preceded by a अवर्णः (अकारः or आकारः) and followed by a अश् letter, the letter ‘रुँ’ is replaced by a यकारः

In the opinion of the teacher शाकल्यः, the letter ‘य्’ or ‘व्’ is elided when it occurs at the end of a पदम् and is preceded by the अवर्णः (‘अ’ or ‘आ’) and is followed by a letter of the अश्-प्रत्याहारः

चरेत् gets पदसंज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् and by 8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते, the letter त् is replaced with द्

See above for derivation of भिक्षुः

भिक्षुस् gets पदसंज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् Therefore we apply 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः to replace the letter स् at the end of a पदम् with रुँ

उँ gets the इत्-संज्ञा by 1-3-2 उपदेशेऽजनुनासिक इत् and is elided by 1-3-9 तस्य लोपः

अात्मारामस् gets पदसंज्ञा by 1-4-14 सुप्तिङन्तं पदम् Therefore we apply 8-2-66 ससजुषो रुः to replace the letter स् at the end of a पदम् with रुँ

When preceded as well as followed by the letter ‘अ’, the letter ‘रुँ’ is substituted by the letter ‘उ’

In place of a preceding अवर्ण: letter (‘अ’ or ‘आ’) and a following अच् letter, there is a single substitute of a गुण: letter (‘अ’, ‘ए’, ‘ओ’)। Note: ‘अ’, ‘ए’ and ‘ओ’ get the गुण-सञ्ज्ञा by the सूत्रम् 1-1-2 अदेङ् गुणः

6-1-109 एङः पदान्तादति When there is a एङ् letter (‘ए’, ‘ओ’) at the end of a पदम् followed by a अकारः, then in place of these two, there is a single substitute of the prior (एङ्) letter

8-2-39 झलां जशोऽन्ते When a झल् letter occurs at the end of a पदम् it is replaced by a जश् letter.

8-4-40 स्तोः श्चुना श्चुः When the letter ‘स्’ or a letter of the त-वर्ग: (‘त्’, ‘थ्’, ‘द्’, ‘ध्’, ‘न्’) comes in contact with either the letter ‘ष्’ or a letter of the ट-वर्ग: (‘ट्’, ‘ठ्’, ‘ड्’, ‘ढ्’, ‘ण्’) then it is replaced respectively by ‘ष्’, ट-वर्ग: (‘ट्’, ‘ठ्’, ‘ड्’, ‘ढ्’, ‘ण्’).
8-4-55 खरि च A झल् letter is replaced by a चर् letter when a खर् letter follows.

Example for मोऽनुस्वारः

Today, we will look at the application of 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः applied in the following verse from Bg1-32

The वृत्तिः from Laghu Siddhanta Kaumudi is
When the letter ‘म्’ occurs at the end of a पदम् and is followed by a हल् letter, it is replaced by an अनुस्वारः (represented by a dot.)

By 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः, when the letter म् at the end of a पदम् is followed by a letter हल्, it gets repalced with अनुस्वारः

8-4-59 वा पदान्तस्य When an अनुस्वारः occurs at the end of a पदम् and is followed by a यय् letter, then it is optionally substituted by a letter which is सवर्ण: with that following यय् letter.

Thus we have two alternate forms, विजयं कृष्ण and विजयङ् कृष्ण

Questions:

1. In step 2, why did the अनुस्वार-आदेशः, that was ordained for the entire पदम्, replace only the final letter म्?

2. Which is the one letter in the यय् प्रत्याहारः that does not have a सवर्णः which can replace the अनुस्वार?

3. Under the sutram 8-3-23 मोऽनुस्वारः, Siddhanta Kaumudi says पदस्येति किम्? Please explain

4. Try locating the application of this rule in the Taittiriya Upanishad extract that was attached in yesterday’s post. The image is below, and you can download the pdf here

Today, we will look at the application of 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण्नित्यम् applied in Bg5-7

The वृत्तिः from Laghu Siddhanta Kaumudi is
When there is a ङम् letter at the end of a पदम् and this ङम् letter is preceded by a short vowel, then the following vowel (long or short) always gets the augment ङमुँट्

8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण्नित्यम् The न् at the end of कुर्वन् belongs to ङम् प्रत्याहारः, it follows a ह्रस्वः i.e अ and is followed by आ an अच्, so अपि gets ङमुँट्-आगमः By 1-1-46 आद्यन्तौ टकितौ, the आगमः (न्) occurs at the beginning of अपि

Questions:
1. Can you spot the application of 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि ङमुण्नित्यम् in the following snippet of a mantra from Krishna Yajur Veda 4.1.2

2. In which of the following sentences can 8-3-32 ङमो ह्रस्वादचि be applied?

3. One of the examples in Siddhanta Kaumudi for this sutram is प्रत्यङ्ङात्मा How is this different from the word प्रत्यगात्मा?
